Didn't we see this like seven years ago? To the DAY? In that case it was a guy on a roof who refused to leave his (three or four, I forget) dogs to get on the chopper, and eventually they gave in and took the dogs too. At least this time they're not forcing people to leave their pets at home. I guess that's something...

Seven years ago. And guess what? THESE ARE THE SAME LEVEES THAT OVERTOPPED THEN! The levees in Plaquemines Parish, anyone remember that name from Katrina? Although they reinforced the levees around New Orleans, which kept it from being another Katrina, other levees haven't been improved since then!!! So again people are being trapped in their attics and have to be rescued.

The levees held this time, ( so far) at least. Might be time to leave parts of LA to the gators and the turtles, and seek out higher ground ?

Seriously, after Katrina, if you're caught by flooding because you didn't heed the warnings... and are now putting other's lives in danger, I think you ought to pay to get out.

Having recently bought an old bit of german engineering (1985 BMW 325e), I gotta say... yes.

It takes a damn lot to impress me from an engineering aspect, but the E30 type sure as hell does it.
Frankly, it's become hard to, erm, behave myself... while driving that car.

He had trucks and the means to leave, he simply chose NOT to. At least now, he's saying that he'll not rebuild. I guess, fool him once, shame on nature, fool him twice, shame on his own damn self.

Lucky to be alive, and so are his pups.

My cajun sister lives down there. The mayor was on top of it not like the idiot last time who blamed Bush. By law the mayor has to ask the governor to bring the national guard in. Which Ray Nagin didn't do. And when he totally jacked it up until it was to late. SO they blamed whitey. The mayor told the people get out or hunker down. They had FEMA and the Guard alerted days prior. And kept in contact with the GOV. On a side note they don't let it out about the black realtors who sold land to condo developers. Just like Utah and Arizona open their borders to get convicts and mental cases. They shipped out the dirt bags during Katrina.

This video is of a friend of my brother and her dog being rescued as Ike comes ashore in Texas. Her van had broken down and she wasn't able to get out in time. Whoever built her house knew what they were doing. After the storm, it was the only one left standing.

Thanx for that perspective, Fivver...I've seen many chopper rescues on TV, but never been able to see all that goes into it, nor see it from the perspective of the chopper itself. Gave me new insight; most interesting.

Cat: Yeah, I saw Nungesser (SP?) on TV (mayor of Plaquemines); he was really vocally pissed during Katrina, and was RIGHT on top of it this time. Good for him!

I'm glad to hear it was a local levee and not the government fucking up again...I hope they get it shored up before the NEXT one!

I remember seeing video from New Orleans of animals abandoned in homes when people went to the public shelters. Particularly stinging was video of rescuers in a boat who bypassed a frantically paddling toy dog who was swimming toward them as they passed it by. I know from their perspective they were saving space in the boat for people that needed rescue. But I just can't find it in my heart to forgive them.

At least the public shelters now accept animals or attempt to make provision for them. Too many people refused to enter the shelter without their pets.

There really is no excuse for this. Isaac was barely a category 1 hurricane. The storm surge overtopped the levees. They have 8.5 foot levees and they received a 13 foot storm surge. The math is not difficult.
