See, I took Puppy into the vet today as she'd recently started clawing at her face, and the diagnosis is... grim.
Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma.

Less than 10% of felines so diagnosed make it past a year, and extending that a puny bit with stressful and painful treatments strikes me as more a form of torture than relief, so we're gonna go with making her as happy and comfortable as possible, as long as possible - for the measure of life should be its quality, never its quantity.

So from that moment, she gets ANYTHING she wants, as there's no remaining concern about weight gain, longterm health effects or whatnot, and imma buy a large stash of high grade catnip (cause Cosmic has the bessst shit, mannn), lay in a supply of tuna, and a ridiculous amount of toys.

If this is to be her last dance, then I shall make it the highest point of her entire spoiled rotten life.
I can do no less.

This coming on the heels of the loss of my beloved Kallista, is a hard, hard blow to take, especially with my own health failing and being smacked in the face with a reminder of eventual mortality.
But rather than fall to despair, as always and ever, imma go down swinging and squeezing every drop of pleasure from life there is to be had.

Hooray for Hedonism.
WE REGRET NOTHING!

Choose LIFE, for as long as you shall have it!

Catnip ahoy! There's only two things, what a cat CAN do, and what a cat CAN'T do. Make it the best of what this cat CAN!

If you've got a spot, plant catnip. I've never seen my beasts so happy as when they're curled up in the shade of that thing, napping and nibbling on branches they keep pulled down within their reach. They wear little cat shaped hollows in the dirt around the low chicken-wire cage I put in to protect the bottom of the plants.

I wish much happy hedonism for both of you!

Why not skip the whole "cat" thing and go straight to the "human" stash, Frem?

I've never tried Heroin or Meth before, but if I'm still single when that death sentence comes, I'd like to think that when I'm on my way out and I got my 6 month license to live I can do it in style without ever screwing up anybody's finances (it's the only way I'd ever try that shit anyhow).

If I had a death sentence on my head and I was your cat, I'd be mighty obliged to have some premium Albacore "Chicken of the Sea" tuna everyday..... with juuuuuuuuusssssssst the right amount of THC in the mix.

Oh, Frem, I'm devastated for you! It hasn't been that long since you lost Kallista, how unfair that now you face the same with Puppy! You're a doll for doing what you can for her for her remaining time, a lot of people would just have had her put down immediately upon diagnosis. We've lost several dogs and cats to cancer--another joy humans have foisted upon the animal world (!)--and it's been heart breaking every time. May her remaining time be joyous, and when her time comes, may your grief be short but your happy memories of her last a lifetime.

Losing them is always devastating; I have to remind myself each time that the joy of having them is far more than what we suffer in losing them. Doesn't help at the time, but makes is to so I don't think twice about having another loving pet.

One of the BAM people just lost their oldest husky, a beautiful, special red (everyone who has pets somewhere along the line has one "special" pet). Tigger was theirs, what Ed wrote about him showed it clearly...they still have six others, all wonderful dogs (they're REAL mushers, so spend Winter sledding with their pack), but that does little to ease the pain of losing Tigger--as you know so well.

When she goes, is it maybe time to take in another stray? There are so many out there who need love and care, and who give so much in return.

As I've mentioned, Puppy looks EXACTLY like our Zino, and I miss each of our cats to this day, so you have my deepest sympathy...spoil the heck out of that Puppy!

Frem, I'm sorry to hear it, but I support your decision, and I hope you spoil Puppy rotten before his time is up, and give him a good send-off. He knows he's loved, and he's better for having found you.

Actually Puppy is a her - and even weirder, she's boy-crazy.
In the oddest sense too, I mean she's always been a bizarre cat, having a certain degree of canine behaviors which resulted in her name, but she isn't fond of other cats, male or female, and doesn't care for human females either, ONLY human males, and she's particular about them.
On top of that, she's jealous about it too!

Anyhows, she's responding well to the medication, antibiotics and other stuff for the scratches where she accidently clawed herself rubbing at her face, I was horrified about that cause its pretty close to her eye and infection would be a disaster.

She is however, still a bit bewildered at the rules-lifting, we had a system going you see.
Being that she'd started to get a bit thick, and has a tendancy to scarf down things she maybe shouldn't (Puppy will eat, quite literally, ANY DAMN THING) she had been cut off from table food, although she was allowed to lick the empty plates since little harm can come of that.

Well, today we had some fish with cornbread and sprinkled a little cheese on it, one of her medications should be taken with food (she's NOT fond of being medicated, but has already made the connection between medication=feeling better, she's bright enough in certain ways) and thus I was gonna dynamite the pond with an irresistable delight.

This was kind of amusing in a way, cause when I chopped her share into bite size chunks and put it in a bowl near my plate, she sniffs at it, looks at me, sniffs again, looks back, and gets this "you're trolling me, I know it!" look....

So I pushed the bowl into her (this is the I-am-done-with-this-plate-now-you-may-lick-it signal) and then tapped on the edge with my fingernail (this-is-yours-now signal) and she sits there staring at me like I have completely lost my mind.

I proceed to then ignore her and stuff my face, and eventually it sinks in to her bone head that yes, she really CAN have all that - OM NOM NOM NOM!

So she's happy as can be at the moment, which'll change for a short bit when I give her another dose of antibiotics, but not for very long, mostly I think it's cause it prolly tastes terrible.

I know your cats are very important to you Frem, and I know you lost Calista Re not so very long ago. I'm sorry you're going to lose Puppy too, but enjoy the time you still have with her, how old is she?

She's like 12-13ish, best we can guess.
Alas that her risk factors for this were so high it was practially a one-for-one catalogue.
Right now I'm trying to fatten her up a bit in case she has trouble eating later, and since the tumor is in the upper right side of her mouth, am gradually moving her from dry food to softer offerings, which means she got a whole can of tuna all to herself yesterday, and this morning she got a whole slice of pizza, albeit a small one.

The Hedonistic bent is most certainly working though, she's so happy she has started kittysong* and when I give her the goodies to nom on, her tail not only springs straight up in quivering ecstacy, she's so into it she's popping her back legs up and down to keep from falling over, heh - that's one happy cat.

-Frem

*Kittysong is a rare, rare event (outside of Siamese, who are far more vocal) when a felidae starts beginning to express its pleasure vocally to itself, Molly did this for some time once we'd rescued her from a very abusive and neglectful environment and nursed her back to health from deaths very doorstep - she prolly thinks she did cap it and wound up in kitty heaven.

Yer a good daddy, Frem. But then we knew that. One word of caution; suddenly switching things this dramatically might interfere with her digestive system. Might I suggest going into it a bit slower? An entire can of tuna fish, when she's been on a diet before, can be a problem. As can switching from all dry to all soft. Just a word of caution, because I, too, want to see her happy and FAT at this point!

Well yeah, I am keeping an eye on it - but for the most part she gobbles down as much as she wants and comes back to nom some more at intervals, I don't feed at specific times so much as just leave a bowl of dry food out all the time, so my cats are used to just munching when they please, so even with adding the delicious tasties Puppy still pecks at the dry food out of habit so this'll be an over time transition, and yes I am trying to fatten her up a bit, lol.

Got a massive container of catnip and some toys today, as well as laying in a bribe for the vet.
As traumatizing as it is to some cats to be stuffed into a carrier and dragged into a scary, unfamilar environ, I feel that the delivery of any final mercy should be done in their own most comfortable environment and that their last moments should be of happiness, not fear and misery.
As such, I have bribed the vet in advance to make a housecall if and when the time comes.

I say if cause my spirit-sisters cat Big Guy, who was a grand old fat bastard of sixteen and more years, had his final laugh on the humans irrespective of such a plan - he crawled up into her lap, and when she bent her tear streaked face down to nuzzle him, he licked her nose, curled into a purring ball and went right there, grinning in his own smug fashion.
The best laid plans of men are oft laid waste by feline intervention.

As for the suggestion of actual dope, aka cannabis - not all cats like it so much, Kallista did, but she was a weirdo, a Puppy doesn't seem interested... oddly enough she's also the only cat who could care less about the laser pointer, she'll not chase it, just sniff derisively at the dot and walk away.

Scored me a cheeseburger on the way back from bribery and plunder, and shared a bit of that with her, yes kitty, thou CAN haz cheeseburger!
