The U.S. Attorney's Office said it is not confirming or denying reports that Jared Loughner will plead guilty in last year's shooting rampage outside a Tucson, Arizona, supermarket.

The attack killed six people and wounded 13 others, including then-U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords.

On Saturday night, the Los Angeles Times and the Wall Street Journal reported that Loughner, 23, is now mentally competent to understand the charges against him and that a status hearing on his competency, scheduled for Tuesday morning, will now be a change-of-plea hearing.

The Los Angeles Times attributed the information to "knowledgeable sources," while the Wall Street Journal said its source was an "official familiar with the case."

"I can neither confirm or deny the reports in the L.A. Times and other media about the Loughner case," Bill Solomon, spokesman for the U.S. Attorney's Office in Arizona, told CNN when asked about the reports late Saturday night.

Asked if his office planned to issue a comment Monday, Solomon said, there was "nothing planned at this time."

If true, it's an interesting twist on the story and makes me further wonder about this guy...

I doubt he will plead guilty, when Schitzophrenia is his diagnosis. Instead he will get not guilty verdict by insanity, thus saving Obama from a trial that might reveal the real killers (if infact other victims were actually shot besides judge ang congresswoman).

Yanno, I thought on this a while...

In regards to "mental competency", I think that by the very nature of the crime, if you find yourself both willing and capable of doing something like this - there is something very, very wrong with you upstairs.

So while 'competence to stand trial' is a useful dodge for prosecutors gaming a badly broken system, I don't think there's any question whatever of this guy being totally fucked in the head.

Ergo, putting him in a cage somewhere accomplishes exactly nothing beyond deferring his problem unto future generations, whereas pitching him into a mental health care facility and picking him apart psychologically to figure out what the hell makes people that way and maybe how to fix that shit might be a better alternative - since due to the nature of his crime I don't have the usual moral reservations about such a thing.

It's a thought, anyways.

He pled guilty to all counts, he's doing better now and so is very sorry, but that doesn't erase what he did and so he gets life in prison, apparently no death penalty for him.
