Any true fan of the X-Files has seen and likely remembers the "Morely" brand of cigarettes that the "Cancer Man", William B Davis made so iconic in the 90's.

Those that remember Morely's from the X-Files might have been observant enough to catch brief glimpses of Morley's later on in other TV Shows they loved (or didn't even like so much).

The first time I had ever seen Morely's anywhere else were on the Matt Nix created show "Burn Notice". Having never seen Morely's anywhere else at the time but X-Files, I figured that Matt Nix must have been a rabid fan of the X-Files to have put them in his show. This was confirmed for me by a recent online discussion with a William B Davis and X-Files fan who posted in the General Discussions forum here.

Last week, I was watching back episodes of AMC's "The Walking Dead" and.... Morley's again!

This morning I decided to look up Morley's on Wikipedia and was shocked to discover that they've been used in at least 60 TV shows and movies, dating back to the early 60's.... and many of them were favorites of mine.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morley_%28cigarette%29

Originally they were "Candy Cigarettes" used in the Dick Van Dyke Show, but their first appearance as real cigarettes were several years later in one of the most classic Episodes of The Twilight Zone ever, the one starring William Shatner with the gremlin on the wing of the plane (Which saw a superior remake as the last and scariest part of the 80's Twilight Zone movie with "The Trinity Killer" John Lithgow playing the part of William Shatner's character).

http://jimcofer.com/personal/?p=8720

I know I've seen that episode of Twilight Zone at least 3 or 4 times. I've seen every single episode of The Outer Limits from the 90s. I must have watched LOST 3 times through... How have I never caught Morelys on anything that happened before the X-Files? Other great shows like Millennium and Malcolm in the Middle I might have just missed the episodes in... but wow! These things have been all over since the 60's. They even made an apperance in Tom Green's "Freddy Got Fingered!" which might arguably be the worst movie ever made!

It wouldn't surprise me if the list on Wikipedia was actually far from complete.

I know this post isn't the usual RWED discussion topic, but truth is I'd rather post it here than there and see what people have to say.

Bonus points to anyone who can actually come up with a show they've seen Morelys on that wasn't included in Wikipedia!

S'what we call a "bland-name-product".
http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/BlandNameProduct

This is used in order to avoid stepping patents or trademarks, and is more common than folk realize.
The other way is the often all-too-obvious product placement, which the studio gets a cut from the manufacturer in response to, it used to be more background but these days it's so blatant it's annoying.

One very interesting tale of well-done product placement and financial support was in season two of the anime Code Geass.
The studio was struggling financially and the series animation was expensive, so somehow a discussion happened with Pizza Hut, who threw them some $$$ in exchange for product placement, which was all-too-easy to do since one of the characters (C.C.) was ALREADY notorious for being a pizza scarfing slacker, which allowed said product placement without infringing on the story - that worked out really well, although in some of the american releases due to the way our laws work they had to censor them out cause for some damnfool reason they would have had to PAY Pizza Hut here for using their trademark (thank you dumbfuck american copyright laws!) despite the fact that they were promoting their product.

Which brought about this hilarious, and excellent fan-made poster.

This being even more ironic right now in the wake of Chick-Fil-A and their venture into politics....

Yep, if you don't arrange it first, you can get sued for using a company's logo without permission. Though I hardly call that foolish, myself. A company should have a say in how their products are presented, and may not choose to associate their product with something.

As a filmmaker, it's easy enough in most cases to keep company logos out (and in the case of animation, where nothing is accidental, it's kinda daft to think they could just use whatever they want, so there's literally no excuse.) And there is a specific type of insurance, called "Errors and Ommission" coverage, that is available to films/TV/etc. that covers a production if they don't have the ability/desire to remove signage and logos, and don't want to worry about penalties.

Note to anyone - Please pity the poor, poor wittle Rappyboy. He's feeling put upon lately, what with all those facts disagreeing with what he believes.

"Goram it kid, let's frak this thing and go home! Engage!"

The article I posted about talks about this SMark, and it's what Frem was missing. In the age of reality TV and raunchy sex tapes, one might think that everyone wants publicity, no matter how base.....

The only problem is, what if you're Pepsi and the sociopathic cereal killer on a popular show regularly drank Pepsi and even went as far as to knock a friend for drinking Coke?

It's kind of like when "dude" who owned the Bunny Ranch in Nevada made a huge deal about backing Ron Paul back in 2008. How many old Christians who might have voted for Paul got as far away as hell from him as they could before the election after that endorsement?

At least I can say that for "the state of the Union", even in 2012. No political candidate wants Larry Flint endorsing them.

To get meta on the subject...

Morley cigarettes are the intellectual property of Tommy Westphall.

Does Wiki mention Spike smoking Morleys?
