Emanuel welcomes Farrakhan help in crime fight

NEW YORK (JTA) -- Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel welcomed the help of Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan to help stop the violence in Chicago neighborhoods.

Farrakhan has a history of making anti-Semitic statements. In welcoming Farrakhan's help, Emanuel said Wednesday that he was more concerned with reducing a 40 percent surge in Chicago homicides.

“People of faith have a role to play and community leaders have a role to play in helping to protect our neighborhoods and our citizens," said Emanuel, the first elected Jewish mayor of the city. “You cannot get there on just one piece of an anti-crime strategy.”

For the past two Mondays, Farrakhan has dispatched hundreds of "Fruit of Islam" members on patrols in city neighborhoods in the city. Farrakhan ordered the show of force in response to last month’s murder of 7-year old Heaven Sutton, the Chicago Sun Times reported.

Chicago Alderman Debra Silverstein, an Orthodox Jew, said it’s good that Farrakhan is “helping” in the fight against crime, “but it doesn’t eradicate the comments that he’s made about the Jewish community,” according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

I do agree with Troll on that one, I detest the man. But then, I'm no fan of Emanuel, either.

However, calling on someone who might be listened to by a particular audience and who has people who will patrol the area doesn't mean he's approving of what Farrakhan in other areas, you just found this one to put up another anti-whatever-on-the-left post, and we all know it.

I don't like him calling on Farrakhan, but I don't consider it something to condemn him with, nor do I consider it an important issue. Now, go on a rant about how I'm horrible for...whatever...and how it's important, oh, and throw in a few irrelvant facts while you're at it. Have fun.

So, starting with "secular"... What's wrong with "secular"? I looked it up, It means "worldly" or "temporal"; is the state of being separate from religion, or not being exclusively allied to any particular religion.

Huh. People who want a nation that is separate from religion. Maybe they would agree with the Founding Fathers? Isn't that what the FF wanted- a secular government? Go look it up; I'm pretty sure that was the idea. Even rappy would agree with the idea of secular.

Is this a case of projection? I have long stopped dreading a Romney win; in fact, I would rather welcome it. The way I see it, austerity has already dragged the EU back into recession. If Romney wins and does what he wants to do, it will push us ALL (worldwide) into a depression. It would be a bitter but useful lesson to our right wing... and everyone else... to have that "trickle down" medicine forced down our collective throats, and find that it STILL doesn't work. Bring it, yanno?

From the TEA party victory of Ted Cruz in Texas, to the rejection of the massive, shovel ready, stimulus like T-SPLOST bill here in GA, there's a strong undercurrent out there that Americans have finally come to grips that the big govt, one size fits all, 'comprehensive' approach to solving all our problems isn't the right way.

Farrakhan wasn't born and raised in Chicago, so why is Rahm calling upon him to help solve the city's problems?

What great track record does Louis Farrakhan have, in ironing out differences or calming public discord does he bring to the table ? Where on his long resume' does it indicate the he has ANY qualifications or insight on solving the crime in Chicago ?

Isn't that something the MAYOR and the people of CHICAGO should work on, themselves ?

And what of the PRESIDENT ? Former community agitat..., I mean 'organizer' himself, is he too busy to be bothered w/ the problems of a city in which his private residence is located to drop in and offer some support ?

It's not like those 100+ rounds of golf are going to play themselves, so that may be the reason.
