2 months back, I bought a beautiful hexagon glass patio table with 6 chairs. It lists at 700 bucks, but after a double sale and some online coupons I got it for under 290 with tax.

That's not the big savings though.....

I already had an "ill gotten" MGD vinyl umbrella that I've had for the last 10 years and never used. I wanted to put it in, but if the 75-100MPH winds last week have anything to say about it, without a stand my glass table would be glass shards now.

I had 29 bucks on my Amazon Card I mentioned in a previous thread. I found a matching color base that weighed 28 lbs and was on sale from 75 bucks to 30 bucks. Not bad.... After shipping and tax, it was 9 bucks more than I had on my card.

Problem was, they didn't add the points, and boy, was I pissed. I would have NEVER bought that stand in my current situation if it wasn't basically free.

The Indian guy I spoke with in several emails told me because it was a 3rd party all he could do was grant me a 10 dollar off my next purchase coupon. The email asked at the end "did this solve your problem, yes or no". I clicked on the "no" link and it gave me the option to have an Amazon rep call me.

I figured it would take hours to call back, but I went ahead and selected "NOW".

NO JOKE..... 5 SECONDS LATER AND I WAS SPEAKING TO AN AMERICAN WOMAN ABOUT MY PROBLEM!!!!

After explaining my issue, not only do I still have my 29 dollars in points to use in the future, but she gave me a "one time only credit against an Amazon Direct purchase made 8 months ago that will refund the money the points should have given me.

She further apologized for the mix up and I said.... I should be the one apologizing now. I feel guilty, I wasn't looking for a freebie. She just said it was a one time per customer service, and the subsequent email reiterated that point.

Rough numbers....?

$0.00
-
Umbrella stand with tax and shipping, 39 bucks....

-$39.00

+$10.00 next time purchase discount....

29.00

+ 29.00 credited back to my card after A f-up....

0.00

In the end, it was FREE!

It's worked wonders so far too.....

Nothing like sitting under my MGD umbrella in 95 degree weather with an ice cold Lemon-aid.

I should totally tell you about the story behind that Umbrella....

Haha....

One trick that used to work with car insurance is that they'd issue your 6 month cards a month before you renewed. If you got pulled over for any reason, even if you hadn't paid that 6 months, you had a document stating you had the insurance.

Sadly, any state I've lived in the last 3 years requires you to fill in your current Insurance Number before you can renew your plates.

Damn technology.......

My car insurance has a bonus savings if you have a renters insurance or other policy in the bundle, basically they kick back $22 worth of your yearly bill (I pay annually, get a major discount for this, too) if you have any other kind of policy with them.
One year of renters insurance with em costs $19.
Oh lemme do the math here....

The big one though, was bagging a very-good/near-mint (mint condition interior), 1985 BMW 325e with 100K miles on it, off a donated cars auction lot for a mere $2650.00, taxes, tags, title and all
Damn thing has a magnaflow performance exhaust on it and pirelli tires too, mind you.
(pulls a 16.8 1/4 mile with a four speed auto, too!)
Essentially the civvie version of THIS.

Looks like this.

And drives, LIKE THIS.

Mind you, mines a 2.7L straight six with BoMo injection, rather than the 2.3L used in the rally car.
Suspension is a bit fluffier and as noted, it's a four speed auto, thankfully the bulletproof ZF 4HP22, rather than the crummy one on later models.

$2650.00

Daaaamn.....

Awesome car and an awesome price Frem. You got it running smoothly now, huh?

I get the bonus for having my car and homeowners insurance together. It's $24 bucks a year and $80 bucks a year off of the car and house respectively.

The only problem????? Progressive doesn't allow me to just specify a dollar amount I want to be insured for, and they INSIST on a replacement cost of 199k. I only paid 67.5k for the house and even after all of the repairs so far I don't imagine I could sell it for more than 90k in this market. Even my majorly reduced property tax card shows the property being worth less than 95k.

Add to that the fact that they raised my premium 9.7% after only 1 year and when I call them about it all they say is some generic bullshit which boils down to me basically paying more because somebody else lived through a tsunami 8 states away from me. It's bullshit.

I got 12 days before I'm uninsured if I don't pay it or find a better carrier.

Does anybody know of a good insurance company that will just allow me to say I want 100k of insurance on my house if a tornado hits it? With 100k I could buy a better foreclosure and start all over again. I don't need 200k of insurance.

Working at the Mart, and having 1/2 of my car insurance bill and my full homeowner's insurance bill will put me in the hole again this month. Fortunately, the way the calendar works out, August is one of two bi-annually "3 check months" so the damage is minimized there. I'll still be digging into the bank for at least 300 bucks though, which means my savings last month and in September are also already spoken for......

Damn minimum wage part time jobs.... grumble grumble......

Insurance, as a rule, is just a scam anyways - one reason I mislike the health care shuffle and step is that they chose to try mandating insurance instead of just expanding medicare to cover everyone and cutting out the fucking middlemen who make that shit a nightmare.
Look how useless, expensive, and predatory any other kind of "mandatory" so-called insurance is, and one can clearly see why I stand where I do, but I digress and that ain't the topic at hand, really.

Anyhows, yeah - I had the rusted out exhaust replaced with a magnaflow performance system (which was 1/3 of the prince of OEM replacement), and then had the timing belt, thermostat and water pump replaced cause they're all in the same place and the labor costs to GET to that damn timing belt are on the high side - ergo I had the mechanic take off everything all the way back to it and replace everything in between that and the radiator - thermostat, water pump, belts, hoses, plugs, wires, filters, distributor, yadda yadda.

Next scheduled maintanence outside of regular oil changes - 50,000-80,000 miles, depending.
Very likely given how little I drive, that it'll be my ex's problem...
We're still the best of friends, but man she was plotting to have me bumped off soon after I bought that car - and her new husband, whom I actually like, goes "nooo, wait till he fixes it up and THEN have him assassinated!"...

So she's all up to spec now, and I have named her Sophie, after a german lady I have a lot of respect for (bonus points for them that know who this was), and none of the neighborhood creeps will come NEAR that car, due to the rumors that it's lo-jacked, boobytrapped, and loaded with surveillence equipment, some of which is true.

Of course, my ex just bought herself a Prius2C, so she's all gaga about having a moden car that actually WORKS for once - we finally broke her of buying american-made shit, which is these days "north" american made, which amounts to being slapped together in mexico out of cheap chinese parts cast from metal I wouldn't make pots with...
I was kinda impressed with it myself, considering she bagged it for under $21K off the lot.

PS. Because the BMW really *does* handle that well, I have to kinda keep a tight leash on my nature when driving, especially when some nimrod does something stupid and I gotta remind myself NOT to blow past him in an opposite-lock drift while flipping them the bird...
USUALLY I can rein it in, but yanno, sometimes...
