Quote:

Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), who chairs the Senate Intelligence Committee, said on Monday that the White House looks like the source for at least some of the classified intelligence that has been leaked to the media.

“I think the White House has to understand that some of this is coming from their ranks,” Feinstein told the World Affairs Council, as reported by the Associated Press. She said she doesn’t believe President Obama himself is the source, although no one seriously thought the President was personally picking up the phone and making surreptitious calls to journalists, or donning a slouch hat and trench coat to meet them in underground parking garages.

The list of possible suspects for the leaks is shrinking fast, because Defense Secretary Leon Panetta and Joint Chiefs chairman General Martin Dempsey gave closed-door testimony to the House Armed Services Committee last Thursday, and chairman Howard “Buck” McKeon (R-Calif.) pronounced himself satisfied that the Pentagon was not the source. The Pentagon has also “announced that it was taking new steps to try to clamp down on leaks of classified information,” according to the AP.

It looks like Feinstein is on a collision course with the White House, which has adamantly denied it was the source for any of the security leaks, even though they look suspiciously like the sort of information a political team would pump into the media in order to polish the President’s military credentials. “The notion that my White House would purposely release classified national security information is offensive. It’s wrong,” President Obama declared in early June.

Senior campaign advisor David Axelrod echoed the President, saying “there were obvious leaks, but they weren’t from the White House.” White House spokesman Jay Carney said “any suggestion that this Administration has authorized intentional leaks of classified information for political gain is grossly irresponsible.”

It’s uncertain what Senator Feinstein will do next. She has thus far supported the Justice Department’s investigation into the leaks, although Republicans have called for a special counsel, considering both the nature of the information handed to the press and the general lack of confidence in Attorney General Eric Holder’s hyper-politicized DOJ. While Feinstein has reportedly entertained the special prosecutor idea, she currently appears to prefer convening the Senate Intelligence Committee to create legislation designed to halt the leaks, a project they are scheduled to begin on Tuesday.

Senator John McCain (R-Ariz.), who is the top Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee, was among the first to publicly accuse the White House of being the source for the leaks. “This is the most highly classified information, and it’s now been leaked by the Administration at the highest levels at the White House, and that’s not acceptable,” McCain said in a June 6 CBS News interview, adding that the compromised information “makes the President look very decisive,” while giving “very little credit to the other men and women who make these things happen.” (Osama bin Laden’s elimination? You didn’t build that, Mr. Obama.)

Senator Feinstein isn’t nearly as tough on the Obama team as McCain, but she has now publicly joined him in asserting that at least some of the classified national security information passed along to the media came from the White House.

Update: Mitt Romney will address Feinstein’s remarks in his speech to the VFW today. Excerpts from his speech were released in advance this morning:

“It is reported that Bob Gates, the President’s first secretary of defense, bluntly addressed another security problem within this administration. After secret operational details of the bin Laden raid were given to reporters, Secretary Gates walked into the West Wing and told the Obama team to ‘shut up.’ He added a colorful word for emphasis.

“Lives of American servicemen were at stake. But astonishingly, the administration failed to change its ways. More top-secret operations were leaked, even some involving covert action in Iran.

“This isn’t a partisan issue; it’s a national security crisis. And yesterday, Democrat Senator Dianne Feinstein, Chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, said, quote, ‘I think the White House has to understand that some of this is coming from their ranks.’

“This conduct is contemptible. It betrays our national interest. It compromises our men and women in the field. And it demands a full and prompt investigation, with explanation and consequence. Whoever provided classified information to the media, seeking political advantage for the administration, must be exposed, dismissed, and punished. The time for stonewalling is over.

“It is not enough to say the matter is being looked into, and leave it at that. When the issue is the political use of highly sensitive national security information, it is unacceptable to say, ‘We’ll report our findings after Election Day.’

“Exactly who in the White House betrayed these secrets? Did a superior authorize it? These are things that Americans are entitled to know – and they are entitled to know right now. If the President believes – as he said last week – that the buck stops with him, then he owes all Americans a full and prompt accounting of the facts.

“And let me be clear: These events make the decision we face in November all the more important. What kind of White House would reveal classified material for political gain? I’ll tell you right now: Mine won’t.”

...and your point is exactly what? Aside from the fact that DiFi will do/say whatever she needs to in order to get ahead politically. Much like Romney, only not as rich. We KNOW DiFi here in CA, and we know just how much credence to give her. Not to mention, from a cite claiming it's "Powerful Conservative Voices"

"Looks like", "I think", "possible sources", "reportedly", "currently appears"...come ON!

By the way, you missed the update:
Quote:

Senate Intelligence Chairwoman Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) backtracked from her comments Monday that the White House was responsible for some of the national security leaks, saying she did not know the source of the leaks.

“I stated that I did not believe the president leaked classified information,” Feinstein said in the statement on Tuesday. “I shouldn’t have speculated beyond that, because the fact of the matter is I don’t know the source of the leaks.”

Presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney seized on Feinstein’s remarks in a speech at the Veterans of Foreign Wars convention Tuesday, accusing President Obama of not trying to find the source of the leaks until after the election.

Feinstein said that she regretted her comments were being used against Obama and said she was “disappointed” in Romney’s remarks.

“I’m on record as being disturbed by these leaks, and I regret my remarks are being used to impugn President Obama or his commitment to protecting national security secrets,” Feinstein said. “I know for a fact the president is extremely troubled by these leaks. His administration has moved aggressively to appoint two independent U.S. attorneys. There is an investigation under way, and it is moving forward quickly."

“I know we are in a campaign season, but I hope the investigation proceeds without political accusation or interference from anyone,” Feinstein said. http://thehill.com/blogs/defcon-hill/policy-and-strategy/239783-feinst
ein-backtracks-on-statement-that-white-house-leaked-secrets

That last one is so DiFi as to make me laugh...of COURSE she knew it would be snatched up by the Romney folk and played for all it's worth. She may be many things, but stupid she is not!

I wonder if she's up for re-election this year or not and wants to show how independent and "tough" she is...that would be right up her alley, too...

Yup, checked it out; she is. That explains everything. Jeez, you're easy to snag; when a Democrat, even Feinstein, can getcha, you're definitely easy!

Niki - Newsflash for ya. There have been SERIOUS national security leaks , during this administration, and it's considered an actual issue, not mere politics, as you're trying to brush it off as being.

These leaks ARE coming from the White House. That's another thing you can't deny. DiFi didn't back off that, but you're acting as if her not pointing the finger of blame directly at Obama himself is some how a indication that NONE of this is true, and she's just grand standing for election year politics.

You , ma'am, are woefully UNinformed on this matter.

Never brushed the leaks off as politics, said DiFi's OPINION of where they're coming from is politics. You obviously don't know her.

Of course I can deny the leaks are coming from the White House--to say otherwise is what's absurd. There's been no proof WHERE they come from as yet, so your flat statement is a lie until someone figures out where they're coming from and proves it. That's the difference between us; you eat up that conservative shit like it was candy and consider it the final word on everything; I'm willing to wait for some facts and proof before I make up my mind. Maybe it DOES come from the White House, but as yet I've seen no proof. You obviously don't need facts or proof; as long as it's a bad thing that involves Democrats, especially Obama, that's enough for you.

Did I ever say none of this was true? I didn't, if you'll note. I wrote that DiFi making accusations (without any proof, by the way) is typical DiFi and made sense given she's up for re-election. I didn't address the matter itself, which is of course very serious and I sincerely hope they do find out where it's coming from and stop it. That has nothing to do with a politician getting attention by claiming things with so many caveats they almost fill up the entire story, reported by a website which proudly trumpets it's "conservative voices". There's a vast difference, which of course you can't see through your conservative haze.

Sorry Niki, it's not 'conservative shit' that there have been serious national security leaks as of late.

THAT is the difference between you and I. I'm looking at the bigger picture. YOU, on the other hand, are mired in nonsensical, silly partisan politics.

Again.

You playing lip service to the PRIMARY POINT OF THIS ENTIRE MATTER comes as zero surprise to me. Your first reaction was to scoff, and mock DiFi, because even though she's a lib Dem, she's not nearly far LEFT enough for your likes. I get that. I really...no, wait. I don't get it. Never mind.

DiFi's not "left enough" for me? Are you kidding? Did I ever say that? I said, for the last time, that anything she says may well come out of political expediency, not her own beliefs (a la Romney). There is no "left enough", despite what you keep saying...you don't even know where I'm very left, where I'm only slightly left and where I'm moderate! And DiFi, when it's expedient, is VERY left.

And no, the primary point of this matter isn't that there ARE leaks, or you would have posted the matter (which has been around a while) earlier or from a neutral cite. You only posted it when a (in caps) TOP SENTATE DEMOCRATS POINTS TO WHITE HOUSE AS SOURCE OF LEAKS!!!!!" We're not stupid, Raptor, and we know you all too well. It was that it was a Democrat, and that they pointed to the White House, which made it important enough for you to post. THAT's the primary point of what you posted and everyone knows it, and as such it's what I addressed.

There have been leaks. That is a VERY, very bad thing. I decry it, wherever it's coming from. I will decry wherever it's coming from when I know where it's coming from. And that's my last word on the subject. I've broken my own rule by responding to you today, I chalk it up to having missed FFF for three days, but it stops now. I'm not into banging my head against the wall. Bye.

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

Before we invaded Iraq, I wrote to DiFi urging her to vote "no", and she wrote me back this smarmy letter about how SHE was in the Senate Intelligence Committee and she knew "things" that we didn't. Turns out, what she thought she knew was so much bullshit. Whatever "intelligence" she had was used to ignore the totally obvious: Saddam and nothing to do with 9-11, and he didn't have WMD.

I've never thought much of DiFI's intelligence since then.

Not nearly as hard as I'm laughing at you and yours.

Scooter Libby was convicted in that case, and the leaks came directly from the White House, from the VP's office, or higher. Of course, Bush and Cheney claimed "executive privilege" and refused to testify or provide documents...

... and you of course now try to insist that it never happened.

The part of it where that never happened. Even Thomas never called Obama "God", any more than the entire right wing thinks he's "the Messiah".

You yourself constantly refer to him as "the messiah", so that proves my point, according to your own rules here. If one person says it, that proves that every person thinks it.

Of course, you've also never presented any evidence that Evan Thomas is even on "the Left".

I have to agree with Kwick here on this one. I think even some of the most Left leaning constituants in this country have long ago given up on Obama as being any source of hope or change for the betterment of this country.

I know that may be hard to believe if you don't have any Democratic friends, particularly those who are poor or minorities, but the shit talking I hear in real life about Obama in the circles I run with by the people who voted for the man seem almost as bad as the shit talking I was doing about Bush Jr. 6 years ago.

The only people who voted for Obama who still support him are the ones rich enough not to be hurt by his recklessness and those who control or are a part of the political/media machine. Politicians, political staff, and the Hollywood Elite.

To everyone else who voted for Obama.....

Nothing but a major disappointment.....
