Found this on the Yahoo News Opinion Page.

Seems this High School teacher offered her students an option after they committed some minor infractions in her class: sit at the tardy table, or wear the cone of shame, a veterinarian doggie cone collar. The parents found out after some other kids posted photos of the perps on Facebook. They protested and the school district is gonna fire the teacher.

Couple of my thoughts:
It seems to have worked- the kids' behavior got better.
At least one of the kids who wore the collar says the lady is a really good teacher.
The teacher did offer the kids an option.

Sounds like a reincarnation of the old " dunce cap ".

So it this humiliating or insulting to the kids? Critics are making out that this an animal collar, so she's treating the kids like animals.

A school counselor suggests that this was inappropriate and harmful, but will cause no permanent damage. Contradictory conclusion, much? No harm, no foul?

If one of the kids says she's a good teacher , and isn't mad about it, should all the grown-ups take their lawyers away and go play somewhere else?

Freedom is Important because People are Important

Hello,

It seems that the teacher gave a choice. Go to the table of shame, or wear the clothing of shame. So the choice was, "How would you like to be shamed?"

I probably have odd views about education. They evolved over time. I did not always believe as I do now.

I believe a solution aimed at solving the problem would be better. The problem should be defined as "Something which disrupts the classroom" and not "something which disrespects my authority." The solution should be aimed at restoring a learning environment, and not on punitive action.

Since wearing a cone does nothing to solve the issue of a disruption, and indeed probably disrupts the class further by creating a big spectacle, I don't think the act was designed to restore a learning environment. Rather, it seems like a punitive action.

Motives matter to me. The teacher may be very good, but I'm not sure that the approach was the best. Especially if it was ego-based.

Sigh. I'd hoped this sort of stuff had gone the way of corporal punishment for kids. Consequences for behaviour is one thing, shaming is another. You might get a short term out come in terms of behaviour change, but surely it can be done in a better way.

Would that be acceptable consequence for an adult? If your boss made you do it? Your partner? Why should some things be not acceptable for adults but okay for kids?

Basically what I was gonna say, only phrased a hell of a lot more politely...

It's a false choice, a magicians hand fake, and it doesn't even correct the freakin problem.
Also, when you're talking such a disparity in power and authority, "choice" is a fiction anyway.

Honestly if I were in her class I wouldn't care. I'd choose the tardy table and try to be on time next time. Whatever.

I assume you're my pal until you let me know otherwise.
