America loves a winner!

Anyone know ? It sure as hell hasn't gone to the people who need it the most, the 10's of thousands of people still living in tents and tarps. Most of which were NOT provided for by the money donated. Most folks still had to buy their own 2nd hand tarps and building materials.

Virtually no drinking water, no toilets to speak of.

But to listen to the well spoken, neatly groomed foreign aid wonks, in air conditioned offices, the way they put it, everything that can be done is being done.

We gave $ to "help" Iraq, too. Where'd THAT money go? About a trillion dollars worth, so far.

Odd that you never want to question that cost.

Nice

Because of something completely unrelated , we should just go on and ignore what's going on (or NOT going on ) in Haiti ?

Really?

Wow. Unbelievably pathetic.

My church has been working with other churches down there in the effected area, so we have friends down there that we can help out and know where the money is going, they send us pictures of the stuff they're doing, the people they're helping locally, we're into helping people to help themselves and improve things from the inside out. We've also been trying to send tangible things down there instead of just sending money, that way the higher ups can't just suck it all up and leave none for the people.

As to that experiment Raptor, I have decided to keep my experiments to myself and not tell people what I figure out about them, apparently by doing experiments and sharing the results it creates all manner of bizarre, irrelevent and unexplainable conflicts which are a hastle to try and make sense of.

So it's NOT about the money?

So what is your point? If it's about money wasted, why won't you address the biggest moneypit in the last hundred years, your pet war in Iraq?

And if it's not about money and waste, then what's your gripe? That money was given to black people? I know how it always galls you when others try to help people of color...

Kwicko: America is wasteful and inefficient and takes inadvisable actions

AURaptor: foreign "aid" there is corrupt and not interested in helping Haiti. What they want to do it open up more labour to exploit, increase Haitian debt, and also take advantage of offshore oil reserves. I think that covers it.

But, I do commend you for taking notice and pushing it back into our attention.

Yeah, a lot of that money is funnelled into the coffers of whatever punkass bitch we're propping up down there now (I believe it's one of Papa Docs former flunkies) after staging a pocket coup and running out Aristeade cause he was pulling them out of the mire our foreign policy would prefer them to be in - kinda like Hugo Chavez, only less crazy, and we helped depose his ass and replace him with yet another incompetent would-be-dictator so what would one expect ?

That said, almost equally irritating is that the big so-called charities are just as corrupt as any junta, and have lost sight of their purpose to the point where getting the money out of people IS the point - and parting with it to actually help people instead of running every more elaborate fundraisers and pocketing bloated salaries ain't.

There's good reasons I limit my donations and assistance to logistical support or equipment you know.

The money WASN'T given to the people. THAT's the " gripe" .

I can tell you didn't bother watching the videos or reading the story linked in the OP.

And apparently, you DON'T know me at all. Shocker.

Maybe you didn't care enough to donate. I get that. But why are you bringing up totally irrelevant issues like Iraq ? ( I think we all know why )

NGO's are corrupt. They use most of their $ to lavish themselves, staying in the top hotels, dining in 4 star restaurants, while literally across the street, folks they're suppose to be helping are lucky to have a pot of rice and a 8oz cup of water for dinner. But I don't get where you come off saying they want to exploit these people, more than they already have, for labor. There IS no work. NOTHING is going on. The people would LOVE to be exploited, if that meant having a job to go to and making some of their own money. Hell yeah, they'd be all in on that, but that's simply not happening. How these folks haven't rioted is beyond me. Maybe their spirit has been broken, I don't know. But 2 years after the quake, the 'recovery' is insanely slow. The 'aid' people are dragging this out, because they have all that $ from our donations, and they're just sitting on it, as a form of welfare for themselves.

That's a pretty good argument for not giving to charity. Which is funny, because "libertarians" are the ones who keep telling us that charities will take care of the poor, and that no government help is ever needed.

It's a good argument for a lot of things.

For being able to fend for oneself, is one.

Being careful in who you donate your time and $, is another.

Following up on how organizations ( and yes, govts ) use our money.

And what can happen when no one is held accountable. We saw it with the UN, in the Oil for Food scam. And we see it in local, state and the federal govt. Private or public, makes no real difference.

Libertarians, like everyone else who donates, expected that $ to be used to buy, deliver and distribute food, water, shelter and medical supplies, as well as some of the volunteers who went to Haiti to help them dig out. What we didn't expect was the $ to go directly into a series of bank accounts, to just sit there idly, only to be skimmed off the top by execs of these NGOs drawing huge checks, staying in fancy hotels, dining in the finest restaurants, while 10's of thousands of folks starved.

How this simple point escapes you, is a mystery. ( no, not really )

Where I come off?

Historical precedence. Which generally informs the present.

I'm not sure what's so offensive about this statement.

If there haven't been foreign interests who have begun a campaign of exploitation, which I would be very surprised because I doubt the previous exploitation ever STOPPED, then there will be.
