Thank goodness; this one had me really pissed off!
Quote:

The Susan G. Komen foundation has reversed a controversial decision not to renew funding for some Planned Parenthood projects, the group said in a statement Friday.

"We want to apologize to the American public for recent decisions that cast doubt upon our commitment to our mission of saving women's lives," the statement said. "We will continue to fund existing grants, including those of Planned Parenthood, and preserve their eligibility to apply for future grants, while maintaining the ability of our affiliates to make funding decisions that meet the needs of their communities."

Planned Parenthood said Tuesday that the foundation had "succumbed to political pressure" by cutting its funding for breast cancer screenings at Planned Parenthood amid increased scrutiny by Congress over how Planned Parenthood provides abortion services.

The decision triggered strong emotions.

In Washington, at least 22 Senate Democrats signed a letter calling on Komen to reconsider its decision.

CREDO, which describes itself as the largest corporate donor to Planned Parenthood, said Thursday that 250,000 of its members had signed a petition urging the Komen Foundation to reverse its decision.

"The move is clearly connected to attempts by Republicans in Congress to defund Planned Parenthood," the organization said in a statement. "In responding to questions about its decision, the foundation cited as its rationale a sham 'investigation' into Planned Parenthood launched by Republican Rep. Cliff Stearns." who the group called "one of the most militant anti-choice members of Congress."

In September, the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, on which the Florida congressman sits, began an investigation into Planned Parenthood over the organization's "compliance with federal restrictions on funding abortions."

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg also announced that he planned to give $250,000 to the Planned Parenthood Federation of America to help make up for the loss of funding from the Komen foundation, his office said Thursday. Komen Foundation reverses funding decision of Planned Parenthood

The wording is cute; translation: "Let's lay low, and maybe we can defund them quietly when their grant comes up again", but it's a start, and GREAT to see the American public rise up against at least ONE of the dirty tricks the filthy anti-abortion s (there isn't a word bad enough) have come up with. You could see the smoke coming out of my ears on this one; just as the right has determined their actions will solely to be defeat Obama, despite what harm they might bring to the country, the s have long since decided even CONTRACEPTION should be made impossible, despite the harm "no abortion, no way, no how" might do to women.

While the idiotic cries of a "war on religion" (CHRISTIAN religion, of course, they have no problem with a war on other religions) is asinine, there HAS been a very real war on women's rights and health in this country.

So huzzah...until next time.

HERO

I'm Pro Life, but it really makes no difference on this issue.

Was it wrong to cut funding to Planned Parenthood? Maybe yes, maybe no, but it's their funding, their choice who to give it to. My own choice would be to close every Planned Parenthood and convert them to Church-supported Pregnancy/Wellness Centers, but that's just me. I did not know these people funded Planned Parenthood, I don't care, but I will never donate to any charity that funds abortion, so these people are off my list.

But, having done the cut, they needed to stand by the decision. A reversal on this under these conditions is just plain stupid. Now an otherwise worthwhile charity has pissed off pretty much everybody and injected itself into a debate that has nothing to do with their issue. Its not not just some silly little Coke or Pepsi debate, its probably the single most divisive issue between social conservatives and liberals that exists in today's society.

So this whole thing is dumb and the lady responsible needs to retire and all Planned Parenthoods should close down...or maybe not the last part, but it would be a nice bonus.

I never told Komen how to spend their money; I simply advised them that they would not be spending MY money any more, since I was removing them from my list of charitable donations and vowed to instead give every penny they used to get from me, to Planned Parenthood instead.

Komen, like Mittens Romney, decided to let everyone know that they don't care about poor people. I let Komen know that in that case, I don't care about Komen.

I've never given them any money but I know I won't be sending them any $ now, now they have to give Abortions R Us (Planned Parenthood) $ because they have to, not because they want to.

I give to Saint Jude Childrens Hospital and it's run by a left-wing loonatic, (Marlo Thomas) but I know all the $ go to the kids, not to the DNC or RNC or their whores in the MSM.

The blindness, the bald-faced prejudiced ignorance, is astonishing.

3% of what Planned Parenthood does is abortions--NONE OF IT FUNDED by anything but direct donations (NOT GRANTS) to Planned Parenthood. There is no connection.

The other 97% of what Planned Parenthood does is women's health services for those who cannot afford them; cancer screenings, etc., for women who would otherwise have no way of receiving that healthcare. You know, the poor Mittens doesn't care about because there's plenty of "safety nets". This is one of them.

The "otherwise worthwhile charity" CAUSED the ruckus, nobody else. They supposedly represent the fight against cancer in women; Planned Parenthood is the single largest provider of cancer screenings for the poor. Of COURSE it pissed everyone off; people have given money, done marathons, worn pink ribbons, all in support of Komen with the understanding that Komen, along with them, cared about breast cancer. To use the money donated to them as a political ploy to defund PP was bound to piss everyone off.

Also, it's one woman with an agenda who caused all this, otherwise it never would have happened. There have been RESIGNATIONS within Komen because of her actions, Congresspeople signing a petition to have them reconsider, and Planned Parenthood has received almost enough in donations to make up for the loss (which is GREAT, now that Komen has decided to give them the grant, too!). Komen had no problem giving the regular grant to PP...it's Karen Handel being hired as "Senior V.P. for Public Policy" which put the power in Handel's hands to play politics.

It's hysterical that people who've never donated to Komen are just (huff, huff) absolutely SURE they'll never given them any money NOW (puff, puff)!!! Ye gads.

I know full well there are those who will forever tightly clutch their treasured, ugly prejudices to their chests and who would rather die than even READ the facts, much less acknowledge them, but for those among us who give a shit about other human beings, I provide some facts:
Quote:

...the backlash has been powerful, particularly among the many professional women who until now have valued and supported both charities and suddenly feel betrayed. And on Thursday night, the San Francisco Bay Area affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure joined with six other Komen affiliates in California in eloquently opposing the national organization's decision. These voices, and the financial support they represent, need to remain strong on behalf of the women with no health insurance whose care makes up 97 percent of Planned Parenthood's work -- a fact often drowned out by the political static over the 3 percent involving abortions.

Komen gave Planned Parenthood almost $700,000 in 2011 to provide poor women with breast cancer screenings who otherwise would not have received them. About 170,000 women benefitted.

In 2010, Komen CEO Nancy Brinker, sister of the late Susan G. Komen {a major Republican donor} hired Karen Handel as senior vice president for public policy. When Handel ran for governor of Georgia, she won Sarah Palin's support by describing herself as "staunchly and unequivocally pro-life."

At Komen, she launched a full review of grants and declared a policy of denying funding to any organization under investigation by federal, state or local authorities. Imagine how shocked, shocked, she was when Florida Rep. Cliff Stearns soon after announced a congressional investigation of Planned Parenthood.

This is the same Stearns who was ridiculed this past spring for filing an amendment that forces all 9/11 first responders requesting compensation for injuries to first be checked against the terrorist watch list to make sure they're not terrorists. The Stearns whose stated goal is to strip Planned Parenthood of all federal funding, "now and forever," even though the Hyde Amendment already prohibits federal funding from being used for abortions.

Planned Parenthood has meticulously kept any federal dollars as well as Komen grants separate from these services. The Health and Human Services inspector general and state Medicaid programs routinely conduct audits of Planned Parenthood. The findings are a matter of public record. The congressional investigation is purely a political tool to cut health care for poor women.

Both Komen and Planned Parenthood over the years have saved lives and helped women who had no place else to turn for care. What a tragedy that right-wing politics has intervened in what should be common cause. http://www.mercurynews.com/opinion/ci_19879960 many people, breast cancer screening means a mammogram. But for millions of poor, mostly young, women who visit Planned Parenthood, it is usually just a physical exam by the only health professional they may ever see.

Those clinical breast exams are controversial — government advisers don’t endorse them. Yet for some, this simple exam has helped spot breast cancer. And Susan G. Komen for the Cure isn’t the only group paying Planned Parenthood to do them — the government does, too. Komen actually funds relatively few.

Surprises like these are emerging about both groups in the dustup over Komen’s decision to bar Planned Parenthood from future grants because of a probe spurred by anti-abortion groups. The decision was reversed on Friday after a huge backlash, with critics saying Komen was hurting the very women it aims to serve.

They are women such as Tina Love, an independent filmmaker in Santa Barbara, Calif., whose sister-in-law is famed breast surgeon Dr. Susan Love. Four years ago, when she was 41, Tina Love went to a Planned Parenthood clinic in Santa Barbara.

“I had a lump and I didn’t have health insurance,” she explained. The agency sent her for a free mammogram, which led to her cancer being diagnosed and treated.

It’s not known exactly how many cancers Planned Parenthood has found. But just last June, Komen said screenings it paid for caught 177 cancers over the last five years.

Some things you may not know about Planned Parenthood:

— Most of its services — 71 percent — are for birth control and testing and treatment of sexually transmitted diseases. Abortions made up 3 percent of its services in 2010. Cancer screening accounted for about 15 percent.

- Planned Parenthood does a physical breast exam on any woman of any age as part of a regular physical, and refers for mammograms any women 40 and older.

— Komen paid for just 170,000 of the more than 4 million clinical breast exams Planned Parenthood performed nationwide over the last five years, and just 6,400 of Planned Parenthood’s 70,000 mammography referrals in that time.

— The government has long paid Planned Parenthood for services related to cancer and sexually transmitted diseases. The group gets federal and state money for breast cancer screening service through a program for poor and uninsured women.

In women who may not see other doctors, “we are encouraging breast self-awareness” so that if a lump is found, they’ll seek help, Dr. Vanessa Cullins, a vice president with Planned Parenthood Federation of America, said.

It worked for Michele Azzaro, 45, of Dallas, who first went to Planned Parenthood when she found a lump back in her 20s. It turned out not to be cancerous, and a mammogram provided through Planned Parenthood ruled out cancer again last year.

Azzaro is unemployed and has no insurance, and has relied on Planned Parenthood for cholesterol tests and pretty much all her medical needs for more than two decades.

“Without having their services, I honestly don’t know what I would do,” she said. “I’m grateful they’ve been there for me and millions of other women like me.” http://www.washingtonpost.com/national/health-science/surprises-in-kom

Given the behavior of "religion", I am not fully convinced waging a war upon it is necessarily a bad idea, or rather on the notion of pushing your beliefs by force, law, or undue influence - I would be fully behind making such a CAPITAL offense, with the consent requirement being much the same, or even stricter, than those regarding sexual assault.

So Planned Parenthood seperates which money is given to which service, so people can give without actually supporting the abortion part if they want? That's cool. Because there are lots of things that PP does that I think are good and important, so its cool that people can give to which ever element they think is good and right and helpful, if I'm understanding Niki correctly.

Frem, you are such a fanatic, don't ever call me one. I suppose we could maybe come to an understanding if we defined what force entails. Because I don't think telling someone about something is force, but maybe you do. Or do you mean force as in Crusade style, because we can totally both agree that that is force and that it is wrong.

Well just politely tellin is one thing, mind you I start to lose my cool after then politely askin them to stop and they don't - but more decent folk do, Malek is friendly with me cause he feels one should set an example and people will come to him, interested...

But no, I mean the ones who wanna ram it down my throat on a pike, whether that be by pushing it at me after I've politely declined, getting their RELIGIOUS morality codified into law (in violation of the first amendment) via crap like blue laws, and in a lesser sense, drug prohibition, or even by downright/outright force - such as AoG/Teenchallenge getting the courts to sentence minors to their abuse and brainwashing for petty offenses, again in violation of the 1st amendment...
So yeah I can be a complete hardass about it, but yanno...

Those who do respect my boundries on that are treated with respect in return, I may have my issues with certain beliefs in general, but to me what a person believes is less important than how they act, yes ?

But that's one of my berserk buttons, oh yes indeedy, I *TRY* to keep a lid on it, most days.

Yes, Riona, they do. Part of it is legality...there are some grants, etc., which are not to be used for abortion purposes, and they also get money from the government, as it says, which cannot be used for abortion. But the right wants desperately to do away with them completely, so they won't mention that, nor will they mention that abortion is only a very tiny part of what PP does. Neither fact furthers their agenda.

They have made abortion VIRTUALLY illegal by all the games they've played, not to mention killing doctors and burning down PP clinics. The right to an abortion is the law of the land, but these fanatics have worked hard--and successfully--to find ways around the law to make it possible only for the rich who can travel to get one. In some places you have to drive to where the clinic is (which can be as far as 200 miles), then make an appointment to have an ultrasound or something else, be "counseled", etc., then wait some period of time (probaly 24 hours), all before you can have an abortion. This is literally impossible for people with little money or time to spare to drive or take the bus hundreds of miles. Ergo: Abortion is impossible.

By passing state or county laws that make it as difficult as possible for women to have that choice, by going after PP and other clinics with lies, slander and lawsuits or provisions (like the really cute one, that any clinic (and those clinics, like PP, provide other services to the poor) must have ALL the amenities that a hospital has!), they essentially are getting what they want despite it being against the law of the land.

Huzzah! Last night there was a lot of rumbling about firing her; I'm glad she was allowed to "resign".

In her own words, in her resignation letter:
Quote:

Just as Komen’s best interests and the fight against breast cancer have always been foremost in every aspect of my work, so too are these my priorities in coming to the decision to resign effective immediately. While I appreciate your raising a possible severance package, I respectfully decline. It is my most sincere hope that Komen is allowed to now refocus its attention and energies on its mission.
"Severance package"...when your employment is severed, get it? She was told she was going to be fired and given the chance to resign first. And yes, this is precisely what brought about the decision to fire her. She WAS responsible for the decision to defund Planned Parenthood, which doesn't use funds from Komen to provide abortions, but uses those funds to provide cancer screenings. The result of the defunding DID cut funding for screenings. Anything else is a flat-out lie. Yes, absolutely her ACTUAL purpose was to defund Planned Parenthood and thus lessen the availability of abortions, but that was not the excuse she put forth publicly. It was the result, however.

I'm happy she's out of her position of power and certainly she'll seek one somewher else to carry on the vendetta against women's right to choose somewhere else.
