This isn't new info, a lot of it - but being carried by a fairly mainstream source which actually engaged in some level of journalism to bring it up instead of cloning police press releases as "news", I thought it worth a mention.

Quote:

Something terrible lies at the heart of New Orleans - a rampant, widespread and apparently uncontrollable brutality on the part of its police force and its prison service. The horrors of its criminal justice system from decades before Hurricane Katrina and up to now lie somewhere between, with little exaggeration, Candide and Stalin's Gulags.

USDOJ has actually labelled them a "threat to the public" in legal documentation, and that's some damn strong wording in the fashion they're using it.

Of course, don't expect much - consent decrees ain't worth the paper they're printed on, just look at Detroit for a classic example of that.

One of NO's many many issues that need addressing. I wish the people themselves could/would do something about a lot of the trouble that goes on there.

Well that's the thing, you TRY to, and those badge bearing bullies will come down on you in a heap, along with their whole little mafia of police unions, the fraternal order of police, yadda freakin yadda...

Why you think they have such a hissy when joe or jane sixpack successfully defends themselves ?
(Which, think on this, cops show up AFTER it goes down, who's gonna protect you before that, hmmm?)

Because it eventually leads to the question of why we need em, why we put up with so much of their shit.
Or rather, how MUCH we need them since it's a well known fact that the more cops you have, the more crime you have(2), since they tend to "find" things to do like harrass people over their pants(1) and always seek excuses to hire more and more of their brain-wrecked, steroid-pumped, sadistic brethren.

I see em more as social/legal janitors, you call em AFTER it goes down, to come collect the perps, clean up the mess, and sort out the aftermath - but in no way do I see them as protectors, more like vultures and scavengers, opportunistic ones at that.

The before/during - that's on you, no matter what they tell you, there's never, ever gonna be enough cops, and that's never gonna be a high enough priority for them, to PREVENT crime - hasn't been for a long time, cause in fact that's sorta MY job is it not ?
Critical difference between CRIME PREVENTION and LAW ENFORCEMENT, is that my job involves making sure that shit never happens to begin with, not cleaning up the mess after it does.
