FREMDFIRMA

Kathleen Edward passed away at the tender age of nine this wendsday past.

For those not familiar with her story, Kathleen was afflicted with Huntingtons Disease, which also claimed her mother in 2009.
Not even a year later, over some nitpick petty BS her neighbors began harrassing her about it, and since no one would call them on it that escalated into some really ugly business at which point it drew the attention of several local folk including myself.(1)

And we decided that we weren't gonna stand for this, that someone should step in and show this kid the world isn't really like that and that people are better than that, and yea verily, a LOT of people stepped up to the plate, foremost among them Hans Masing of Tree Town Toys, and when presented with the opportunity to do something nice for a kid having a tough time of life, most folk stood to above and beyond any standard you could name.
Which culimated in "Princess Day" - one whole day devoted just to her, starting with a limo ride (in the most RIDICULOUSLY ginornimous limo I've ever seen) to the toystore and a shopping spree for both her, and many of the children at C.S. Mott's Childrens Hospital, where she then went and distributed most of the largess, and followed up by a trip to the petting zoo and a pony ride.

Here's some images from that event.

She was a nice kid, both of herself and in that she inspired people, and will be missed.

(1) Said neighbors, despite official apologies, are sincerely unrepentant, petty, and nasty - definately some prime examples of the worst of humanity, but thankfully, and as usual, far overshadowed by the best of us.

AURAPTOR

America loves a winner!

I don't understand. What could possess anyone to harass a little girl, one who had lost her mom, as she suffers from such a disease.

Some day we may learn to just inhibit the gene. I think the society has way to many morons trying to apply the solutions they already have, and not enough thinkers.

That's what a ship is, you know - it's not just a keel and a hull and a deck and sails, that's what a ship needs.

I've never heard of the disease manifesting in a kid of that young age. It often manifests in one's 40s, can manifest earlier or later, I've heard of 20 somethings who were effected already, but a little one? That's a sad story but at least she knew some nice people who are able to care about her and hopefully counteract the meanness of the neighbors.
