Obama, in Kansas, salutes Texas

When you travel a lot, you can get confused as to which state you're in.

Even if you're president.

Opening his speech today in Osawatomie, Kan., Obama said, "It is great to be back in the state of Tex-- ... state of Kansas!"

Obama briefly explained he had been giving a "hard time" to Bill Self, who is the men's basketball coach at Kansas University, a big hoop rival of the University of Texas.

Self's team did lose did lose to the Longhorns last season -- at home in Lawrence, no less -- but the Jayhawks got revenge by beating Texas in the finals of the Big 12 tournament.

In any event, Texas is not Kansas -- as residents in both states would surely be happy to tell you.

My new policy on speech mess ups: If they start to say the wrong thing and then correct then it isn't really that funny, just human-traveling/working-a-lot. But if they say the full thing wrong then its funny.

Gotchya. So, this wans't funny, but this...

Quote:

LOST FUMBLER If John Kerry loses Michigan, he will probably blame it on his joke writers, then Woody Hayes and the mighty Ohio State Buckeyes. But he only has himself to blame. He should have used that several-decade gap between his job in Vietnam and his job of running for president boning up on his knowledge of sports. The Prowler has documented several examples thus far, and over weekend Kerry really goofed up.

To get his Ohio rallies up and rolling, Kerry used a set of jokes to open his events. In Bowling Green, his shtick went something like this:
"If you elect me and my running mate, John Edwards, we are going to give you the courageous leadership you need. We'll take the tough positions, the courageous positions, the tough stands. But there's one tough position I will not take: I am not going to choose between the Falcons and the Rockets" -- this is a local reference to the well-known rivalry between Bowling Green University and the University of Toledo.
"I will say this," he added. "There is nothing better than Buckeye football, period!"

Kerry used this set piece several times in Ohio, to great effect, never mind the waffling with the generality of "Buckeye" football. Was he talking Ohio State University specifically? Or just football in the state in general? Only Kerry knows.

But then Kerry dug a huge hole for himself. On Sunday and into Monday, Kerry hit Michigan, where he attempted to use the same Ohio jokes. Clearly, the sports humor has to be taken out of his hands before he really embarrasses himself.

"I just came here from Bowling Green," Kerry told the crowd to subdued applause. "I was smart enough not to pick a choice between the Falcons and the, well, you know, all those other teams out there. I just go for Buckeye football, that's where I'm coming from."

At that point, before all the boos began raining down upon him, Kerry seemed to realize his error. In an attempt to silent the angry crowd of University of Michigan supporters, Kerry said, "But that was while I was in Ohio. I know I'm in the state of Michigan and you got a great big M and a powerhouse of a team." Then his face, presumably, the Botox permitting, turned Big Blue.

But hey, cut Obama some slack, huh? Kansas, Texas... hard to tell one set of white folks from another.

Actually, it makes my case. Obama's little gaff, 'may' be mentioned, and then quickly glossed over. Had it been a Republican, headline news, Sunday morning talk show discussion... yeah, not the same coverage. Not even remotely.

Seriously, had I not posted this, would anyone have even heard of it ?
Prolly not.

Well, since you lifted it from USAToday, I'd wager that at least SOME people would have heard of it. It's not like you got the big scoop all on your lonesome, is it?

Kansas and Texas share some traits, idiot governors and terrible football teams among them.

Still, pretty bone-headed mistake.

The only reason such drones even exist in Democratic campaigning is the absolute awfulness of the potential opposition - I mean if the choice is between stupid and subcompetent, and utterly incompetent, dumber than bricks, intolerant and plain flat out nasty...

I'll take stupid and subcompetent.

I think we deserve better though, from EITHER pack of feckless goons, including the one currently installed - I ain't impressed, that for damn sure.

I agree, DT; you nailed it nicely. That kind of silliness (when it's not a really big laughable gaffe) is good for nothing but media attention--which it doesn't deserve--and partisan snarking. I'm with Riona:

And for me it's only funny if it IS something funny, and worth noting if it shows an egregious ignorance. On either side.

At least w/ bands, someone can tape the name of city on the back of a guitar, so the lead man can easily look down an read what city he's in.

Only problem with that theory is that it assumes the roadies know more than the band. While that may often be the case, it's not guaranteed.

I'm actually surprised this kind of thing doesn't happen more often. After all, for most politicos (and bands), they're flying into some place, being rushed to a venue, not getting to really see any sights or talk to the people there, and then being rushed onstage to give a performance.

If it were my gig, I'd be in the habit of asking just before I went onstage, "Where are we right now? What city?" Get the info, DON'T let your manager or chief of staff start in about where you'll be next, or tomorrow, or anything else - JUST the pertinent info for this locale - and get out there and say the words. It's likely the only way to get through these kinds of things when you've got a dozen or more a day to do.

We've got nearly a year to go, and I expect we'll see a lot more of these kind of "where am I?" gaffes from all sides. Pretty much always good for a chuckle.

And speaking of Texas, Rick Perry now says that the President can basically repeal a law passed by Congress and duly signed into law by a previous President, simply by issuing an executive order.

Not sure if you can call such ignorance of how things work under the Constitution a "gaffe", especially since he repeated his point four times when being questioned on it.

Bah, they all believe that, he's just the only one dumb enough to say it out loud.

One positive note to their mourners bench of lunatics - they keep letting the mask slip and revealing the true colors of the GOP's Feudo-Corpo-Facist agenda, which makes it harder to cover up in the usual bullshit.

*sigh* and it ain't even original cause they stole the whole parcel from economics policy on down, from Mussolini, and we all know how well that worked out for him, right ?

What Frem said.

It's been Mussolini for a while, buck particularly post-2000. And yeah, they all think the only rules that apply are the ones they make, but they're willing to inherit any power that any of their predecessors were granted, just none of the responsibility.

Also, they like to blame backwards. Obama is still doing it with Bush, even on financial deals he made himself, and wars he started himself, and Bush did it with Clinton all through. Yeah, Bush and Clinton were abominable, but at some point you gotta own up to your own gorram mess.

If you follow that entire series, eventually they get to a lady who was in charge of water safety in Texas. When asked why they felt they could cheat on EPA requirements, she said something to the effect of, "Texas gets to decide what is safe. EPA has no power over us."

I can't find that link now, but it was in a video.

Meanwhile, today in South Carolina, Rick Perry claimed we are at war with Iran and Afghanistan. I think for him, confusing Texas and Kansas would probably qualify as a light day in gaffe-world! (And at the rate things are going, he'll probably be more welcome in Kansas than he will be in Texas).
