It contains three different influenza viruses. Just a heads up, because some people don't respond very well to the combination vaccines.

Also, it's pretty much the exact same vaccines they distributed last year. If you got last years vaccines, you might already have antibodies in your system, meaning this new vaccine is more likely to cause a reaction and make you feel sick.

I got the vaccine last year, but I haven't this time around. I question the purpose of flu vaccines, because there are so many strains out there. Last year work organised and we had had swine flu the year before, and whooping cough the year before that, and I was kind of sick of the family pandemics.

Supposedly vaccines related to the actual virus can be somewhat effective, and that immunity can decrease between vaccines year to year.

I don't know if I believe that, though.

What rooks me is that either the folks who's job it is to deal with these things are either so stupid, corrupt and incompetent - or have nefarious agenda, to the point where they're capable not only of violating something as iron-clad as BSL-3, but also things that any high-school student could tell them are fucking boneheaded, like the idea of using live virus, which caused a polio outbreak in africa, and freakin hell, Flumist seems almost a delivery system for pandemic instead of a cure...
Really shooting live virus up someones nose, who is almost guaranteed to then sneeze a crapload of it everywhere, in places like Walmart or Drugstores, all but assured to be full of folks with weaker immune systems like children and the elderly, who thought that was a good idea ?

Worse is how repeated incidents break trust with the establishment, to the point where if there ever *IS* a real pandemic, we're screwed cause not enough folks will trust in these assholes to obtain sufficient herd immunity, because of their negligence if not malice.

And every time they put profit before safety, it just gets that much worse.

Call me stupid, but I do actually have a fair amount of trust in doctors, particularly at the clinic I attend, where they are not big into over medicating or diagnosing. So I do prefer to listen to experts rather than Internet rumour.

Um, live virus flu mist is confirmed, not internet rumour.

weakened, not killed. If they are, in fact, weakened, since sometimes things happen even in a certified lab and with labeled vials.

Here's another.

The viruses in the nasal spray vaccine do not cause the flu. LAIV is approved for use in healthy* people 2 through 49 years of age who are not pregnant.

I don't get flu vaccines, I feel it is unnecessary for me since I have a good immune system and if I do indeed get the flu it only serves to make my immune system even better after the few days of unpleasantry is over with. When I get older I may get it, but right now I'm not in a high risk group so I'll pass.

Its not that I think there is anything conspiratorially wrong with it, I just don't feel a need to get vaccinated.

I wasn't disputing that. I was saying - I listen to what my doctor says, which is, 'you don't need the flu vaccine'

As far as I am aware, all vaccines are made with live weakened versions of a virus, or a similar virus. That was how vaccines were invented..ie cowpox for smallpox. I may be wrong, but I thought that was how vaccinations worked.

Actually, I just looked that up and I was wrong, there are non attenuated and attenuated viruses used in vaccinations. I've had both seeing that I was given the live polio vaccination as a child, as were all children my age and I know of no-one who went on to develop polio. I do however know older adults who grew up in the 50's and suffered polio and still suffer because of it.

From wiki

1. An inactivated vaccine consists of virus particles which are grown in culture and then killed using a method such as heat or formaldehyde. The virus particles are destroyed and cannot replicate, but the virus capsid proteins are intact enough to be recognized and remembered by the immune system and evoke a response. When manufactured correctly, the vaccine is not infectious, but improper inactivation can result in intact and infectious particles. Since the properly produced vaccine does not reproduce, booster shots are required periodically to reinforce the immune response.
2. In an attenuated vaccine, live virus particles with very low virulence are administered. They will reproduce, but very slowly. Since they do reproduce and continue to present antigen beyond the initial vaccination, boosters are required less often. These vaccines are produced by passaging virus in cell cultures, in animals, or at suboptimal temperatures, allowing selection of less virulent strains, or by mutagenesis or targeted deletions in genes required for virulence. There is a small risk of reversion to virulence, this risk is smaller in vaccines with deletions. Attenuated vaccines also cannot be used by immunocompromised individuals.
3. Virus-like particle vaccines consist of viral protein(s) derived from the structural proteins of a virus. These proteins can self-assemble into particles that resemble the virus from which they were derived but lack viral nucleic acid, meaning that they are not infectious. Because of their highly repetitive, multivalent structure, virus-like particles are typically more immunogenic than subunit vaccines (described below). The human papillomavirus and Hepatitis B virus vaccines are two virus-like particle-based vaccines currently in clinical use.
4. A subunit vaccine presents an antigen to the immune system without introducing viral particles, whole or otherwise. One method of production involves isolation of a specific protein from a virus or bacterium (such as a bacterial toxin) and administering this by itself. A weakness of this technique is that isolated proteins may have a different three-dimensional structure than the protein in its normal context, and will induce antibodies that may not recognize the infectious organism. In addition, subunit vaccines often elicit weaker antibody responses than the other classes of vaccines.

Oh don't get me wrong, I am not discarding the idea utterly, I just thing we can do better with modern tech than we have been - just cause granddaddy and daddy did it that way, and it's always been done that way doesn't mean we should rest on our laurels, cause science marches on.

I'll also note that both type-3 vaccines (Gardasil and the Hep-B one) have proven to be quite dangerous and of dubious effectiveness, especially the former - I was in fact TRYING to throw the red flags (and getting shouted down the whole while) before the bodies started piling up, and lost a relative to it, which made me kinda pyschotic about it.
