I was clicking around today and happened to see an article titled "Fanatic Christians want a National Athiest Registry"

Is this something that's been around a while and I missed it?

I'm sure Hitler is getting a woody in hell at that thought, though....

Hello,

This sounds like crazy fringe wacky stuff. I doubt it will become anything at all.

But if they do create an atheist list, then this Christian volunteers to be first at the top.

Well, Wish, you just earned the prize for the first guffaw of the morning--your visual of standing by the printer waiting for Mike's "file" to print. Priceless.

But if we're talking about being on lists, wouldn't FREM be on most of them? Or have you avoided recognition, Frem, for all these years?

As to the atheist list, I gotta look that up...that's truly scary, tho' I agree, it would never get traction. I think...

Oh, shit, it's REAL (or rather, they actually mean it):
Quote:

The title says it all. They are comparing atheists to child molesters, and saying they need to be monitored.
Quote:

Brothers and Sisters , I have been seriously considering forming a ( Christian ) grassroots type of organization to be named "The Christian National Registry of Atheists" or something similar . I mean , think about it . There are already National Registrys for convicted sex offenders , ex-convicts , terrorist cells , hate groups like the KKK , skinheads , radical Islamists , etc..
This type of "National Registry" would merely be for information purposes . To inform the public of KNOWN ( i.e., self-admitted) atheists .

That's right atheists are like sex offenders, terrorists, and the KKK. I don't really have anything clever to say about it. It is just flat out revolting.
Quote:

Now , many (especially the atheists ) , may ask "Why do this , what's the purpose ?" Duhhh , Mr. Atheist , for the same purpose many States put the names and photos of convicted sex offenders and other ex-felons on the I-Net - to INFORM the public !
To inform the public? Why exactly? Well, to harass atheists, of course:
Quote:

My family and I would sure like to know how many of those 109,000 are ADMITTED atheists ! Perhaps we may actually know some . In which case we could begin to witness to them and warn them of the dangers of atheism . Or perhaps they are radical atheists , whose hearts are as hard as Pharaoh's , in that case , if they are business owners , we would encourage all our Christian friends , as well as the various churches and their congregations NOT to patronize them as we would only be "feeding" Satan .
In other words, they want a list of all the atheists in their area so that they can harass them with right wing religious propaganda or worse yet, do them financial harm. And they can't possibly see why atheists would be bothered by such harassment and financial extortion. Why, the only reason an atheist would be against being listed on such a registry is because they would be ashamed of their "atheist religion." This is another form of eliminationism, wherein you eliminate the group you hate through intimidation, harassment, and economic blacklisting.

I am not an atheist. I am a Christian. And I don't think you have to be an atheist to get chills down your spine to know that there are so-called "Christians" who think like this. To think that these people consider themselves of the same faith I follow, and would still think to harm thy neighbor with harassment and economic extortion simply because they don't believe the same things is chilling.

8:53 AM PT: Thanks for the Rec list, folks.

8:58 AM PT: I am going to give a Hat Tip to my friend at a message board I frequent for bringing this to my attention. She goes by the username Raven there.

Update: some have commented below that this man only has a small following, and suggest that I've overblown the threat. My response to that is that Westboro Baptist Church only has a small following. Should we ignore them? You can believe this: with the growing extremism on the right this idea will eventually catch on with the Dominionist, sure as a wacko like Michele Bachmann caught on with the right. I believe our job here is to note these threats, and begin developing a serious response so we won't be caught off guard when these ideas make it to "mainstream" dominionism.

A lot of comparisons to what the Nazi's did to Jews in the comments. Those comparisons are accurate, but for a chilling contemporary analogy, entlord in the comments suggests the comparison to lists of abortion doctors that the religious right fanatics have passed around. This is the most apt comparison because this is the way the contemporary religious right operates. They make these lists as a means of harassment with the ultimate hope of encouraging their violent followers to take matters in their own hands. Make no mistake about it, this is not merely about discovering a chance to proselytize, and it's not merely about economic black-listing and extortion, this is about the dreams of more right wing violence.

And now, Even Crazier Stuff from i like bbq in the comments:
Quote:

The arrogance displayed by the evolutionist class is totally unwarrented. The facts warrent the violent expulsion of all evolutionists from civilized society. I am quite serious that their danger to society is so great that, in a sane society, they would be, at a minimum, denied a vote in the administration of the society, as well as any job where they might influence immature humans, e.g., scout, or youth, leader, teacher and, obviously, professor. Oh, by the way… What is the chance evolutionists will vote or teach in the Kingdom of God? ~ Tom Willis, Creation Science Association.
That takes the cake in violent eliminationist rhetoric. Willis doesn't even try to dress up his rhetoric in code language. It is absolutely vile. http://www.dailykos.com/story/2011/08/28/1011322/-Christian-fanatics-w
ant-national-registry-of-atheists-%7C-Update:-Even-Crazier-Stuff
only one man (currently), and it IS DailyKos, so those things need to be taken into account.

But, "In which case we could begin to witness to them and warn them of the dangers of atheism" oh gawd help me; I've been the target of that from everything but Mormons to so-called "Christians". To go through it again...jezus, please NO!

Aside from which, they'd have to make a list of all buddhists, since we have no "god".

Nonetheless, I think it's a scary thought and a perfect example of ultra-religions right-wing fanatcism. I think it will never come to pass. Would take a LOT of work just to identify all of them (and us buddhists)...and money, too. Just one more crazy spouting off his craziness, but scary nonetheless! The wording alone makes me shudder, not to even mention the mentality!

Hahahahahahaha - No kidding, Wish! I've mentioned before, I actually DO pepper my phone conversations and e-mails and such with "trigger" words and catch-phrases, right? Things like "bomb", "blow up", "explode", and more - all just to make sure that if someone's paranoid enough to listen in on me, I'm going to make sure to give them something to listen to!

Had a guy trying tell me how easy it was to convert a semi-auto AK-47 to a full-auto one, and offering to show me how, and all I had to say to him to run him off was "Nice shoes," said with a smile and a wink to let him know I recognize "cop shoes" when I see 'em. Before he left me alone, I also informed him that doing such a thing would be criminally stupid even if it WEREN'T stupidly criminal; for one, I have no need for any automatic weapons. For another, the mere act of firing such a thing is like shooting off a signal flare and hanging out a giant sign saying "COME ARREST ME!". And for a third, the REASON I don't want or need anything like that is because they are terrible ammo wasters. I explained that you get more bang for your buck with a well-placed single aimed shot or a quick two- or three-round "burst" than you'll ever get by just going pray-and-spray.

I don't mind being on lists, but I'm careful about which lists I place myself on. That said, it hurts me not one bit to be on a list of atheists, and if someone wants to kill me for it, then I'm willing to die for my (lack of) beliefs.

Most of the gun websites I frequent have discussions about what they refer to as "Zombie Apocalypse". It's couched language that allows you to talk openly about shooting and killing lots and lots of people, because you're not REALLY talking about killing "people", but rather "zombies", so that's okay.

But it has a meaning to these folks. I've little doubt Wulfie and his friends refer to shooting zombies when they're really talking about how much they wish they could just start shooting "liberals".

That so-called Zombie Apocalypse is the underground code for when everything goes tits-up, society collapses, and it's every man for himself.

Hello,

I should confess that I often amuse myself (as do my friends) by considering scenarios of a real zombie apocalypse. Not a code word, not a metaphor.

Just a fun game of, "How will we survive when the Zombies attack?"

So it's not just an excuse for talking about mass-murder. It's also a fun geek thing.

Oh I am sure I am on many a list, although how exactly is a matter of debate cause I have near infinate pseudonyms and depending on who you ask between two and six real, legal names.

Also, thanks for the laugh, Mal4, I so needed one.

Those dominionist bastards ARE scary though, make no mistake, they absolutely *MEAN* this shit, at one point I had a bounty of 30K going for my whereabouts and identity after we managed to get some fundamentalist hellcamps shut down on the IN/IL border, and I am still quite unwelcome in the region.

Ironic note to that, Justin was one of the folk we hauled out of there, soon after we first started doing so "officially", and it was the site of our first casualty as well.

Yet, historically, governments kill far more people than religious extremists. This government, for instance, was built on the bodies of 12 million indians and 11 million slaves.

My great grandparents were killed because they were on a list of Jews.

Our government would never do that today, they would disguise there lists thinly. Here's what they're doing now:

Terrorism watchlist (list is 90% muslim)

Leaking of List of Illegal Immigrants (list is more than 90% latino)

Sex Offender Registration (list is almost than 90% black)

Sure, not all the people in those ethnic groups are on those lists, but then, there were 9 million jews and only 600,000 were on the list, and they were still able to get 6 million of them.

So, they're working on it. Probably keeping lists of people suspected of being listworthy, or pending names, considering possible classification, etc. sublists so they can cover the entire ethnic. (easy enough to do: You closely associate with a list member, you're probably a good tentative candidate. You're probably also in that ethnic group.)

The list mislead is an easy one to correct, all they have to do is reclassify those on the list by things like place of birth/parents' birth, socio-economic background, etc. (I'm sure they'll call this "profile") and they can remove the various whites who ended up on those lists.

That way you can separate out those who associate with terrorists because they know Hasim and are also have connections to a muslim country from those who know him from the country club and have connections to golf.

Once you have you "likely pending terrorists" list, which they probably already have, then you can just take a list of all muslims.

That's what a ship is, you know - it's not just a keel and a hull and a deck and sails, that's what a ship needs.
