Get a copy of it and read it, becaue I talk about the entitlement programs in there.

And listen, how many people in here are less than 50 years old in this audience? All right, I got in trouble by asking that question right off the bat, there, but these young kids who are coming along, they know for a fact there’s not going to be a Social Security and Medicare program. They know that."

Now, of course, Rick Perry's spokesman says the book doesn't reflect "his current views" - but according to Perry himself, it sure reflected his views less than two weeks ago.

Because bastards like Perry looted it, they'll pay and pay and pay into it, at gunpoint, which is what taxation really is... and wind up with nothing for it.

"There Would Be NO Social Security or Medicare" -- or jobs beyond minimum wage, regulations, and many other things. They're running like hell from that book and hoping as few people as possible remember he wrote it, but I don't think it will work, and there are so MANY thing that are bound to come out, I doubt he can even get the nomination (unless Republicans are TRULY more stupid than I think, which may actually be possible...).

Freedom is Important because People are Important

Hello,

I feel very strongly that if Social Security is dissolved, then people should be refunded every penny they put into the program.

Otherwise, it's blatant, open, proudly declared theft. I don't think that would sit well with me.

Already is, Anthony...

Think about it, most of the seniors recieving those benefits now, they paid into it under a whole different contract, you know.

They were promised a certain level of coverage, and yet it was cut, and cut, and cut, coverage reduced, or eliminated entire, like dentures, eyeglasses, STUFF *THEY* PAID FOR revoked after the fact.
Did they get any of their money back, then ?

No.

Theft, breaking contract, in my eyes - and I got some *issues* when it comes to broken contracts, mind you.

I concur with Frem. The money is already stolen. It's like money already lost in the stock market. It's not coming back.

Social Security of today's recipients is coming from today's depositors, and all of today's depositors know the system won't exist when *they* become recipients.

So the question is really Do we allow the theft to continue?

Frem: Basically, 'yup'. But I'm in favor of FIXING the problem, not doing away with it and leaving people on their own, which I think would be horrific.

The Kuchi tribes in Afghanistan went through the desert with their caravans. When someone was too old to keep up, they just fell behind and died. I'd like to think we're better than that.

Hello,

There was a similar tradition amongst some Native American tribes, although I think they felt it was their duty to die when they could no longer keep up.

I am not advocating such a system.

However, I do not see Social Security as a public aid program. I see it as a publicly managed retirement program. I pay into the system with the expectation of being able to retrieve funds later on when I need them. I believe this was the purpose of the system when it was set up. Am I mistaken?

I am sad to see it so warped and misused and misunderstood. I think that in state and local government, it is considered a crime to raid a retirement fund. I'm not sure why it should be different for Social Security.

You have the gist of it, Anthony. Social Security is called an "entitlement" only because you're ENTITLED to the money that you paid into it. It astonishes whenever I hear people claim that those who've paid into this system for generations are not owed a penny of their own money.

I agree with both of you.

Unfortunately, Anthony, at this time in history a lot of retirement funds ARE being raided, with impunity if not legally. Makes me sick.

And yes, I take major offense at it being called an entitlement--a useful buzz word used to effect--given that sounds like...well, that guy feeling he was "entitled" to better health care as a member of the legislature than what he was getting. THAT, to me, is "entitlement", NOT having a contract with the government then being considered as "living off the government teat" when the contract is fulfilled. Same with Disability and Medicare. We're OWED (maybe a better word, but one which doesn't fit the purpose of those who use "entitlement") for what we paid into the contract; the government has absolutly no right to dig into OUR money (plus interest) and I wish there were a way to stop them from doing so.
