Boy, Magons, you guys have imaginative (and harmless, all things considered) extortionists!
Quote:

For 10 long hours, the teen sat still as a bomb squad gingerly worked to remove a suspicious device strapped around her neck.

It was Wednesday afternoon in the affluent Australian suburb of Mosman when a masked man entered the home of 18-year-old Madeleine Pulver. He forcibly fit a strange object around her neck and fled.

Attached to it -- a note with "serious" demands, officials said without elaborating.

Bomb squads, negotiators and detectives rushed to the leafy suburb on Sydney Harbor, where sports stars and celebrities live.

Homes were evacuated; streets closed.

From a distance, Pulver's distraught parents -- well-respected and well-connected members of Sydney high society -- watched while four officers sat with her, keeping her calm.

But when the ordeal ended early Thursday, police discovered that the contraption they thought was a bomb contained no explosives. It was a hoax -- "a very, very elaborate hoax," said Luke Moore, the Australian police superintendent. More at http://www.cnn.com/2011/WORLD/asiapcf/08/04/australia.bomb.ordeal/inde

I dunno if it even made US news (I'm boycotting the news currently so I can choose what I want to read off the internet; I need to not think about what's happened lately).

Ours are not so harmless, as this case, which came to my attention at the time, clearly illustrates.

The Incredible True Story of the Collar Bomb Heist
http://www.wired.com/magazine/2010/12/ff_collarbomb/all/1

My interest at the time was in part due to the officers not taking the matter seriously, which directly lead to the untimely death of Brian Wells, regarding it as a hoax or prank, cause they all but invited the media to make sport of it, and only acted to protect themselves - which gave the bad guys the information that Wells had been caught, leading to one of them popping the detonator.

At least your police forces had the decency to take the matter seriously even if it was just a prank - although given what happened above, a damned scary one, I hope they catch the sleazebag behind it, I really do.

Even if it was a fake bomb I hope those guys get caught and sued for the trouble they caused, they should have to pay for all the hours spent dismantling the thing. Have some charges filed against them or something, that just isn't okay, even if it is sort of a prank, its a prank gone awry.

Since it's down here they will get charged not sued most likely. If convicted then they will have to pay for the all the call-outs to police and such.

I didn't realise I wasn't "outted" already.

And Magons, if it was Mosman then they'd have a jewel-encrusted glock in one hand and a giant diamond-encrusted crucfix in the other.

Verrrry strange. "Watch that child"?? Some of them are really funny.

We could use a few of these:
Given how weatherbeaten and old it looks, makes me sad.

And omigawd, this one's in SAN JOSE (I grew up in Cupertino--then an "unincorporated" area of SJ):

Those are great! I know they're not all Ozzie stuff...it says so on the site, under almost all the pix. Some are from the UK, and like I said, that awful one was from San Jose. How disgusting! But that one with the two messages looks like "Wait here, there will be a crock along soon to eat you and your child", hee, hee, hee!

(Is that other one for real? It says it's been blocked...)

I just thought I'd post about how the alleged hoaxer has been caught. A business executive??? Weirder and weirder.

Not so weird as you think, there's a certain subset of bizarre behavior amongst high end executives, particularly in the Tech industry, bastards like Patrick Naughton, for example, and many of them have engaged in certain kinds of "Tourism", or exploitation pageants, even various forms of white slavery, so this doesn't really shock me.

*headscratch*
Just as an aside, why the hell do people say "white slavery", as if it's somehow worse, as if no one ever enslaved a paleskin before in history, as if it's something more or less repulsive than slavery itself ?
I mean, what's the fuckin difference, it's evil no matter who ya do it to, no matter how you do it, isn't it ?
Sorry, it just bothers me, it does.

A business executive as the collar bomb suspect, you say? Well! Where is Rappy when you need him to suspect jihadists? Or Wulf, to suspect a niggruh?

Frem; because it draws more empathy from white folks, I would guess. And we all know, black slavery was long done away with, right?

You're totally right Frem, I heard someone say that the other day and I was thinking that it is an odd thing to say, slavery is just as bad period. Maybe they say it because it gets people's attention in historical novels, though endencherment etc. was quite common back in the day in the Colonies etc.

You mean Indenture ?
Cause honestly we all but have that now, when the things one needs to have something resembling a comfortable live all come with pricetags that leave you a finance companies bitch for so many years of your life you might as well be an indentured servant, especially on top of the college debts required to get that paper to obtain the kind of job that even getting the "credit" to obtain them at all requires.

It's a sham, a scam and a trap, is what it is, debt-bondage slavery, of a sort, and IMHO every bit as vile.
