Sometimes you own the libs. Sometimes, the libs own you.

What should Obama do? It's a fairly likely scenario if you ask me.

a) Let the US default?
b) Give in to Republican demands?
c) Sign a short-term debt-ceiling expansion, and then go through the whole thing again in 6 months?

Obviously all you Tea Party folk want b), but what do other people think Obama should do? Feel free to add your suggestions. Obviously none of the above options are palatable, I'm leaning towards c) - republicans might lick their lips at putting a gun to Obama's head again further down the line, but I actually feel Obama's hand might have strengthened by then. If the US public has already experienced one round of cuts, they might lose their appetite for them, for one thing...

It's not personal. It's just war.

"We'll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false." -- William Casey, Reagan's presidential campaign manager & CIA Director (from first staff meeting in 1981)

(a) Let the U.S. default.

The voters blame the economy, the crash, and the debt ceiling debacle as being the fault of the Republicans. They also by a 3-to-1 margin WANT tax increases to be part of any plan to reduce the deficit and pay down the debt. They always have, even when Bushy was handing out $600 checks and telling people that there was absolutely no need to pay down our debt (and the GOP backed him up on that)

So let the government default. CONGRESS has to raise the debt limit. If they don't, it's on them. If the GOP wants to tell the people of the world that the United States has absolutely no intention of ever paying back the money it has borrowed (the vast majority of it borrowed by Republicans, don't forget!), then by all means, let them tell the world that.

And when it's time to stop sending out those checks, make damned sure to start with those Congresspeople who voted against raising the limit, and cut off their funding first. After all, it IS what they wanted.

It's Obama who isn't compromising.

The GOP has a deal where it'll raise the debt ceiling ( again ) along w/ real , actual cuts in spending.

There. That's compromise.

Where has the President or Senate offered any substantive, written down plans of their own?

Oh, that's right... they haven't.

Interesting dilemma.

The Republicans have to cater somewhat to the Tea Party base and resist new taxes or they may well have a conservative 3rd party running candidates in 2012 and lose control to the Democrats.

The Democrats, on the other hand, are constitutionally incapable of supporting pretty much any budget reduction legislation unless it has tax increases for the "Wealthy".

I expect that both parties will play the crisis for absolutely every political point they can, and then reach a temporary last-minute deal which they can claim is "for the good of the country" even though no one, least of all the rabid partisans on either side, will be happy with it.

Such crises will continue as long as the pols can get good play out of them.

It's politics.

HERO

There was a Republican compromise offered.

The Republicans went to the table with spending cuts only.

The Democrats went wanting spending cuts and revenue increases including higher taxes.

The compromise was spending cuts and revenue increases that did not include higher taxes, but
Obama demanded higher taxes at the last minute.

So no deal, thanks to Obama. The Republicans plans have been out there for months, why is the President stepping in with only days left and letting us know his terms? Where was he a week ago, or a month, or six months?

I note for the record that six months ago Obama wanted only a cap increase with no cuts or higher taxes, but that was quietly ignored as he was too busy getting his ass kicked by Republicans since last December (even before the new House was sworn in...aka the tax cuts he was against then signed). I also note for the record that in the Senate Obama never voted in favor of a debt limit increase.

...and that's all your remarks deserve.

I vote for c) -- might be nice to let us default, except it would cost ALL OF US, and the rich least of all.

Geezer, you may consider it a tax hike, but the Democrats have asked for an end to subsidies to ultra-rich corporations and closing of tax loopholes, both of which are, in my opinion, quite reasonable. Gee, if loopholes were closed, those who get Republicans elected might come closer to paying the percentage of taxes they constantly whine they pay. But the Republicans said they'd agree to close loopholes ONLY if the tax code was changed so that it had no impact on their taxes. So much for "compromise".

The silliest thing is that the American PEOPLE recognize that we need increased revenue as well as cuts to bring down the debt, it's only the politicians who are too cowardly to stand up to their base and the Tea Party. Obama was willing to go against hard-line Democrats to accept cuts to Medicare and Social Security in one form or another; Boehner is so scared of the Tea Party that he can't accept ANYTHING that even hints at asking the wealthy and corporations to pay a penny more. Gimme a break.
Quote:

According to the remarks obtained by Fox News, Boehner said Obama initially expressed a willingness to reform all three entitlement programs in exchange for "a list of tax increases."

Boehner said he refused, but came back with an offer to discuss corporate and personal "tax reform." Further, Boehner said he wanted "fewer tax rates and a top rate less than it is today" by early next year.
.....
Boehner's statements come as he seeks to assure his caucus he's on their side when it comes to taxes and spending cuts. Tea Party loyalists have had concerns Boehner was edging too close to the White House position on taxes, creating friction between him and Cantor, the House majority leader and favorite of Tea Party Republican freshmen. http://newmediajournal.us/indx.php/item/2213

Ya left out the part where the Republicans are compromising by NOW demanding a balanced budget amendment. If the Prez agrees, Magic Obama is gonna wave his wand and-- Presto!- balanced budgets for all time! Even if this is a good idea, about which economists disagree, it can't happen that fast.

We've had the discussion about the process before-- the R's in Congress can vote for one, anytime they want, maybe pass it by a super-majority, then send it on to the states that have to pass it also by super-majorities. They don't have to get approval or agreement from Obama. Don't see where it's a negotiating point, unless it's "We demand that you ALL vote in favor of it in advance."

Then call it 'revenue increases' if you like. It's just semantics. One of the 'loopholes' the Democrats proposed to close in a recent plan was the mortgage interest deduction. Changes to that deduction mean a lot of home owners will have to pay more taxes. If that's not a 'tax hike', then what is? Most of the other 'corporate jet' stuff is small beans, a few billion at most, and has more political than fiscal impact.

The Democrats had a fine chance for either a 'tax hike' or a 'loophole closing' (your choice) by letting the Bush-era tax cuts die, but they apparently realized that there are a lot of rich, politically active, Democrats that'd hurt, and left them in place.

Sorry, but both parties are playing politics with this issue for all they're worth. It looks like a lot of folks are buying into their propaganda.

Congress DID its job. Not kowtowing to Obama's extreme Marxist ideas of massive govt spending isn't a failure to do its job. If anything, it's exactly what they're there to do.

And as for impeachable, the Fast & Furious gun running program , which resulted in the death of a US Fed agent, should be what's mentioned more here.

Interesting. You're basically saying that anyone who allows guns to be sold that end up in the hands of criminals should be imprisoned along with the criminals they sold guns to.

I'm sure the NRA will back you in this fight. ;) But hey, it might close that mythical "gun show loophole", right?

I think Obama should grow up, finally, and see the world as it really is, and not as his Marxist idols have hoped it would be.

As someone who scrimps and works and pays for everything in cash because of it, including college, I am concerned about the debt. But moreso I'm concerned about who OWNS the debt and credit economies.

That ground looks very unstable from where I'm standing. Especially when you factor in corporate greed and the real world products with tangible monetary value being mostly overseas. IMO, our money only seems to have value because we say it has value. That concerns me. All the social programs we have, all of it would be for nothing if our economy collapsed, and what's more, we'd be talking all of us in a great depression -maybe-famine kinda setting.

That's not getting into other stuff I think about, like more robust safety nets and alternative economics.

That said, I thiiiink I'm okay raising the debt ceiling, and I'm even okay raising taxes for now, but I also really think we need to cut out some of the spending and pay some of this back somehow. In the very least so it doesn't get held over us and we're forced into stuff that's basically slavery or "kill us all."

I call bullshit. I remember the kerfluffle over extending the tax cuts all too well. Just like the debt ceiling, the Republicans made it IMPOSSIBLE to let them expire for the rich, and letting them expire for everyone wasn't something anyone wanted to do.
Quote:

The standoff amounts to a game of political chicken, but it also raises questions about what is best for pulling the country out of the recession, chipping away at unemployment and paying down the deficit.

In comments at a backyard town hall in a Northern Virginia suburb, President Obama delivered another pointed defense of his plan to extend the cuts for middle class and working families, while letting others — specifically the cuts for high-income earners — come to an end.

"We could get [tax cuts] done this week, but we're still in this wrestling match with John Boehner and Mitch McConnell about the last 2 to 3 percent" of upper-income taxpayers, Obama said.
.....
Boehner, however, appears to have stated that he would support the president's plan over the alternative of not extending the tax cuts at all, though the interpretation of what he meant is still up in the air. [Just like right now, Boehner appears to understand that compromise is what makes government possible, but his cohorts are staunchly "all or nothing" and refuse to consider anything but "All"]
.....
Will raising the top tax rates hurt small business?

One of the most common objections to letting the cuts expire for those in the highest tax brackets is that it would hurt small businesses. Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) recently said that allowing the cuts to lapse would amount to "a job-killing tax hike on small business during tough economic times."

This claim is debatable. Less than 3 percent of tax returns reporting small-business income are filed by taxpayers who fit Obama’s definition of a “high-income” taxpayer.

According to the nonpartisan Tax Policy Center, small-business income makes up a majority of the income for about 40 percent of households in the top bracket and a third of households in the second-highest bracket. Based on this analysis, if the objective is to help small businesses, continuing the Bush tax cuts on high-income taxpayers isn't the way to go.

Moreover, much small-business income is taxed at low or zero rates right now. Small business also fully deduct wage payments, so a higher tax rate should not impact their choice of hiring people.

http://old.news.yahoo.com/s/ynews_excl/ynews_excl_pl3604

The reality is that the GOP made it IMPOSSIBLE to let them expire. They threatened to block ALL legislation, remember? They said they would stop unemployment benefits. And the bottom line is that the Democrats DIDN'T HAVE THE VOTES to let them expire, even only for the wealthy.

Obama naively thought they could work with the Republicans (which lesson he STILL hasn't learned). They should have settled the issue before the election. Instead, they waited until the lame duck session.

Obama's concern was that the Party of No would be willing to sacrifice economic recovery and the welfare of the middle class to serve their rich masters.

Republicans made the continuation of those tax cuts their #1 priority. Congress basically ground to a halt because Republicans refused to take action on ANYTHING until Democrats agreed to let the cuts continue. You don't remember them threatening to filibuster everything, including the START treaty and DADT repeal? Republicans made the continuation of those tax cuts their #1 priority. Congress basically ground to a halt because Republicans refused to take action on ANYTHING until Democrats agreed to let the cuts continue.

You can't change history by hoping everyone forgot what really happened. The Democrats never HAD a "fine chance"--they never had ANY chance because the Republicans named themselves the "Party of No" and held everything hostage until they got their way. It's worked great for them so far, and I doubt it will change any time soon.

Bingo!

The only way the US is going to reduce its deficit, get a balanced budget and start to pay down the debt is a mix of revenue increases and spending cuts. Those cuts are going to have to come from a number of places including large cuts in military spending, which is the largest discretionary budget item.

Not because Obama deserves it, but because such an attack "without any semblance of an impeachable offense would smack some sense into America." It would prove once and for all that our political system isn't broken, it's "being destroyed by a specific cabal of sociopaths known as the Republican Party."

So it's a case of "heads you lose, tails I win", he's damned if he does and damned if he doesn't. There's your GOP "logic" at work!

You pretty much said it all, thank you Nick.

Byte, PR - that's exactly the thing with me...

I've set things up so that I'll get by no matter what, even if I wind up bartering skills for food, so long as there's enough people left standing around here, we'll do ok.

But unlike the sociopathic randroid self-involved, myself and most Anarchists feel a substantial amount of civic responsibility, it's in our NATURE, that which makes us Anarchists, cause we *must* believe in, support and depend on each other as human beings, it's part and parcel OF that philsophy... excepting the Nihilists of course, who are hypocrites anyway cause they tend to change their tune real fast when *they* need help.

Where's the humanity in being able to ride out an economic collapse while watching everyone else suffer - I feel bad enough about having a secure line of food and income when I see so many don't, there's no way in hell I'd act in self-interest in a way that harms so many, hell no.

And THAT, in a nutshell, is the difference between someone like me, and someone like them - and why I hate them so.

Funny bit related to that from last nights work shift - we had a car pull into the entrance, stop, and shut off the lights and engine.
Rather than stomp in and act like a goddamn wind up nazi, like so many security folk do, I took up a discrete position and watched - usually that's someone lost, arguing with their girlfriend, something entirely innocent, and generally self-resolving, but you have to watch it anyway cause that one time in ten.. it ain't.

So, the guy gets out and pops the hood - right, mechanical distress, so I come up and offer assistance, and once he sees I ain't gonna shake him down, explains that the car is overheated and he doesn't know why - after a few questions I diagnose his problem (cracked heater core) and inform him he is very lucky, in that I have handy a nearly full container of pre-diluted GM type coolant (I bought to top mine off cause the stupid console dingy-bell kept going off every time I went uphill) - so I fill his coolant tank, give him the number and address of a reliable mechanic, and send him on his merry way.

Which, think on this - is FAR more discrete, and in fact resolved the situation far quicker, than hassling the poor soul would have been, AND generates positive PR for the complex, since the notion DOES occur that this might be a nice place to live, neh ?

Being decent to your fellow many isn't just somethng morally "good" - it's ALSO the most effective long-term policy as a general rule, it being unwise to piss off large factions of people you happen to live on the same planet with, yes ?

Which is again, why I consider insane the self absorbed sociopaths who, regardless of excuses, seem to be doing harm "for teh Evulz" since it doesn't even HAVE a noteable benefit to them other than hurting folk they don't like.
That's just crazy.

"We'll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false." -- William Casey, Reagan's presidential campaign manager & CIA Director (from first staff meeting in 1981)

Just came across a little speech, and it seems damn near custom-tailored to today's issue...

Quote:

So here we are, in a country with more wheat, and more corn, and more money in the bank, more cotton, more everything in the world; there's not a product that you can name that we haven't got more of than any other country ever had on the face of the earth, and yet we've got people starving. We'll hold the distinction of being the only nation in the history of the world that ever went to the poor house in an automobile. The potter's fields are lined with granaries full of grain.

These people that you are asked to aid, why they are not asking for charity, they are naturally asking for a job, but if you can't give them a job why the next best thing you can do is see that they have food and the necessities of life. You know, there's not a one of us has anything that these people that are without it now haven't contributed to what we've got. I don't suppose there is the most unemployed or the hungriest man in America that hasn't contributed in some way to the wealth of every millionaire in America. It was the big boys themselves who thought that this financial drunk we were going through was going to last forever. They over-merged, and over-capitalized, and over-everything else. That's the fix that we're in now.

- Will Rogers, October 18, 1931

AFA the debt, I don't want to saddle future generations with crushing debt anymore than I want to saddle them with environmental debt, like global climate change, a radiologically-contaminated globe, and an ecology impoverished by mass extinction. OTOH, I'm not using "debt" as a boogeyman and you shouldn't be either. The USA debt is actually lower than many developed nations, so what's the problem? Please, explain yourself clearly and specifically, using facts and figures.

No one wants dirty air and polluted water, so this is the biggest straw man argument you on the Left continue to fall back on. Of course, AGW is 100% bogus, but it sure does sell to the dumb masses, huh? ( about as good as religion. Oh, the irony )

No, the debt is NOT lower than many developed nations, and for you to even suggest as such is nonsensical. I guess what you don't know can't hurt you, huh?

Quote:

Uh- huh. The problem Obama caused. How? Again, please elucidate. Cite facts and figures.

ObamaCare, which we don't have the $ for, Recovery and Reinvestment, which was a complete waste of nearly a trillion $'s , upping the over all baseline for how much $ the Federal govt spends,... this is pointless to even waste time going over again. We've only been discussing the reckless spending by Obama for 3.5 years now.

In any case, we all know what you and your religion represent. If it wasn't clear before, it's getting clearer by the day.

And yet you can't even say it. Gee, I wonder why ?

Oh, and part of the money you earn is the governments. That is what taxes are the share you pay the government to live here.

I suppose without regulations or government regulators everyone will just behave and not pollute. That worked so well in the past.

Well you've obviously have been wrong for 3.5 years. Did you see the Congressional Budget Office's report on the Health Care overhaul? It saves money!
Now go ask anyone the Recovery and Reinvestment Act helped if it was a waste.

You have your facts upside down. Obama has spent more in 3 years than Bush did in 8.

And it never occurred to you that ,maybe, we could have sensible, reasonable regulations and inspections , and still have clean air, food and water ? For you, it's either the iron fist of the imperial federal govt, or it's anarchy ?

And your wiki link is ridiculous. Doesn't remotely deal w/ the non-discretionary spending we're going to have to deal with, in the years to come, even BEFORE ObamaCare ( which absolutely does NOT save any $, but will cost us 1 trillion $ , from the very start )

The R&R act helped anyone ? Maybe a few, who lined their pockets at the tax payers expense. Sure. but did it help the economy ? Hell no. Which is even funnier, since most of that $ was suppose to kick in LAST summer ( not immediately, in '09, when we needed it ). The Dems were praying for that 'Summer of Recovery' to take place, and then ride that tide of good feeling all the way to November.

How'd that work out for the Dems, hmmm?

Common sense, Niki?

I think you'd best check w/ Thomas Paine.

Your blind allegiance to the federal govt is akin to those who clung blindly to the rule of the British Crown, prior to our Independence.

The govt is not what makes this country great.

Hope you figure that out before too long.

He can't. Such facts and figures simply don't exist.

Of course, Rappy's excuse will be that "you're not worth wasting my time..."

I think Rappy honestly believes that the national debt gets wiped clean every presidential election, and the nation starts off at a zero balance again with every new President. Therefore, he actually does think that Obama has spent all of the $14.3T debt, and Bush spent not a penny of it!

That is how his mind works, and how math-challenged the boy really is.

Those people who don't pay income tax still pay gas taxes, sale taxes, not to mention fees for things such as drivers licenses.

Then again I bet you never considered any of those did you?

No the link does not deal with up coming years. It just shows that you where wrong.

As far as the summer of recovery, where is the stock market as compared to then? How about the number of loans given out?

Finally if you want to talk about regulations fine....

Please point out what is unreasonable in the Safe Drinking Water Act. I'll wait, be specific.
