Oh, and BTW DT? SOMEONE just opened this thread with the word "bitch". Apparently SOMEONE hates 52% of the population.

YOUR view that Dems lose the conversation bc they're vulgar and crude puts you in the category somewhere between irrelevant and delusional. Might want to re-think that.

I was wondering about the graph - how can we have an even higher per-GDP debt load in the 40s and 50s and have a booming economy, while today it's staggering under less load? And when you look around the world you see similar patterns. Singapore with a very high debt load is thriving. Countries with lower debt loads are stumbling.

So I think the debt per se has very little to do with economic health.

Yes, there are numerous historical examples of economies booming under heavy debt loads, AND higher tax rates than what the US has now (as you mentioned). These are big glitches in the matrix of people like Rappy, and Wulf. I guess they just shrug them off.

The US economy IS headed towards a cliff on its current trajectory though, with its debt - even the IMF says so. But that's not to say it can't be turned around. Other countries in the past have turned around higher debt/gdp ratios, and paid down their debt.

It's not personal. It's just war.

I'm willing to bet they didn't pay down their debt with tax cuts.

"Although it is not true that all conservatives are stupid people, it is true that most stupid people are conservatives." - John Stuart Mill

And I'll bet they didn't do it with more spending. I like what Ron Paul has said..Keep spending at this years level. Forget his son's then lower it 1% a year...Just keep it at this years level. When the economy starts growing again we can pay off the debt...that sounds like a fair compromise. Then look for waste, end wars, etc..and we can start moving that money into cost of living raises etc...Just seems like a way we can all live with and fix OUR problem and become much more efficient.

"We'll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false." -- William Casey, Reagan's presidential campaign manager & CIA Director (from first staff meeting in 1981)

Thing is, Kane, even if you keep spending at this year's level, you have to borrow money to do it. That requires raising the debt ceiling.

I'm not in favor of keeping spending this high, nor of increasing it for any reason other than basically "emergency" situations. We do indeed need to cut spending; the fight comes over WHAT we cut spending on.

We can cut the funding to the military-industrial complex ten percent per year for five years. We can cut funding to the prison-industrial complex AND the for-profit prison industry by simply walking away from the War on (Some) Drugs. We can put some real teeth into regulation, and when someone systematically abuses the defrauds the system (I'm lookin' at YOU, Rick Scott!), we can make goddamned sure that they pay far more than they profited from their illegal behavior.

And we can close loopholes in the tax code.

We *can* do those things, and they would show a seriousness in addressing our debt and deficit problem. But none of those things will garner a single GOP vote, which proves beyond any doubt that the GOP doesn't have the slightest interest in actually addressing the debt problem; they're only interested in punishing the less fortunate.

Really??? The price of everything has doubled in the past three years??? Hmmmm... last I checked... beef... can still get a decent cut for $2.50 and pound. Milk? About the same as three years ago. Same with cheese, chicken, fruits, vegetables and bread. Houses? Cheaper, definitely cheaper. Water? We just had a 10% rate hike... first in 15 years. Gasoline? THAT has gone up by about 50% (not 100% tho). Electricity? That took a big jump back when ENRON was jiggering the market, but not much since. HEALTH CARE COSTS? Well, shit... those go up by double digits every year. Blame the insurances... they're the ones jiggering the system, not the government.

So anyway... where was the dollar devalued by 50% again? I dunno what you're talking about, Kane. I'm pretty price-conscious, I've had set limits on the price I'm willing to pay for daily expenses for over ten years and yeah... I've had to raise them a bit in the past year or so, but not double.

Diapers? You buy diapers?

I have no problem with government debt. What I DO have a problem with is that the debt is going towards useless wars. Businesses routinely borrow in order to expand or become more productive. The government ALSO sets the stage for greater productivity, in ways that "the market" can't or won't, because they can't profit from it, like building roads and sewers. How productive do you think we as a nation would be if our cities were knee-deep in shit, and people were dying of cholera?

Hell, we're STILL living off the roads and dams and the Rural Electrification Act of yesteryear.

As far as I'm concerned, Osama bin Laden won. He said he'd bankrupt this nation and he has... all for the price of 20 guys and a few boxcutters.

Well, let's pass a short-term debt ceiling raise that gets lowered back to the 14 trillion after we pay last years obligations, end the wars, use money saved for other budgetary needs, Pass a balanced budget amendment, ferret out all wasteful spending...I think that proposal is better than any I've heard. Sure I'm not the CBO, but something tells me I'm onto something.

Really, I think we have plenty of revenue if we get serious about wastful spending and war. Think about what the markets would do if we closed 100's of bases around the world(japan, korea, etc..), ended at least four of our wars, and announced we found 500 billion in waste? Talk about a revenue boost! Balanced Budget? No problem.

Kaneman, aside from war and servicing our debt the biggest wasted spending is healthcare across the board. That means Medicare, medicaid, county emergency rooms, etc. The solution is cut out the middleman insurances, since they waste an inordinate amount of government money.

Thank you for posting in a method which is somewhat the opposite of what you used to post (except for the "stupid idiot" part). It means we can at least TRY to communicate.

Raising the debt ceiling for a few months is for political reasons, period. They want to do this all over again next year so they can use it politically in an election year and, given their interagency, it would mean a battle just like this all over again. Battles like these keep everyone from focusing on what's important, and what they campaigned on: Jobs.

Keeping it at this year's level means quickly cutting all kinds of things, putting a LOT of people out of work suddenly, and lowering our credit rating--the latter of which WOULD be a tax increase for everyone. It's not "fiscally responsible". Extending it THEN working diligently to find the waste and unnecessary programs (there certainly are plenty), closing loopholes, ending subsidies, ending the cap on Medicare, is all reasonable, to me.

Interestingly, several of us here (I noticed Mike, but am pretty sure there are others) would be willing to just do the above and cut spending. But the GOP INSISTS on going after Medicare, SSI and Medicaid (but not the military), says all the above would be a tax increase, and refuses in ANY way to create revenue. Virtually all economists agree that to bring it down we need both cuts AND revenue. So we're willing to do cuts, and even work on the "Big Three" PLUS the military, yet the GOP DEMANDS major cuts RIGHT NOW, especially the safety nets, while refusing to even consider any kind of revenue, and the Tea Party wants to not raise the debt ceiling at all, despite the destruction that would cause.

Ron Paul has some good ideas; but he also has some simplistic ideas which would simply not work. The ones you mentioned are among the latter.

Up until now, nobody's really gotten serious about the debt. Obama submitted numerous plans over the last year; the GOP refused to consider them, then suddenly at the last minute is using something they've always agreed to, in order to make a huge, unnecessary political battle. It's gamesmanship, pure and simple, with us as the pawns.

What happened to "shared sacrifice"? What "sacrifice" are the top 1% making--or is the GOP willing to ASK them to make? So who's compromising and who's not?

THIS.
Of course, as stated, the GOP (and I'd say about a quarter of the fucking Democrats besides) has no interest in getting off the public tit to finance their petty hatreds.

Church of The Lost (alternatively, Church of Lost Children) is the reform/rehabilitation arm of things, the ones who try to redeem the catatonic, the basketcases, the pyschologically iatrogenic.
The golden rope program was also founded there and run for a while, but it took off on it's own as a seperate thing, as intended, once the ball got rolling - the "helpers and healers".

VI (which actually has no meaning, a bit of an in-joke this) is the enforcement arm of things, which used to be pretty nasty business but these days is mostly lawyers, expert witnesses, guardians ad litem, and folk who can sub as caretaker when no family member is trustworthy - the "muscle".

Other than in a minor advisory/intelligence role (aka "meddling", according to Justin), I don't really have much to do with it anymore, also as intended, cause when WWASPS and all their little spinoffs came down with a crash and a bang, it really was time for someone who's answer to the problem wasn't as vicious - it's a different fight now, on a different field, and I'm too damn old and broken to be roughing people up anymore anyways...
But there's always the possibility I might make an exception.

Basically CoTL is the heart, compassion-driven healing of the harm, such as is possible, and in the gentler ways, preventing it in the first place.
VI is the fist, when gentler means are ineffective or inapplicable.

I've been meaning to look COTL up for some time now because they sound like nice folk and I always enjoy hearing your stories, it took me a long time to come to where I fully believed them, occasionally I question some of them, but mostly I believe you now. It isn't the whole evil reform school thing that stumped me because I can definitely picture that, it was the whole "we're learning by the seat of our pants and don't know what we're doing but we're just going for it" thing, that is so hard to find these days, something that is truely pioneering.

Woulda been a damn bit less pioneering had I known THEN that Sweden and that whole "nordic" region was a good fifteen years ahead of us the whole bloody time in great part due to the tireless work of Alice Miller - man, without Doc Perrys research it woulda been even more touch-n-go.
But then some things can't really BE taught in a classroom, either.

It's not really "over" though, never will be, cause there's even MORE awful stuff out there I am reluctant to discuss in detail cause it's so horrific, although I heard word through the grapevine that the Feds finally bagged up BiggShot, a Florida based packager/distributor of material for other predators, and look, it only took em TWELVE YEARS to get around to it, grrr.

ETA: Or more, cause I *know* he was in Candyman's (aka Wayne Camolli) contact list.

Wasn't just us either, there was Luther and The-Underground, but he tried to go public on 20/20 and they stifled him and re-cut the interview to a few minutes of out of context stuff to make him look bad at the request of the service he was excoriating (AOL) who at the time was one of their main advertisers and seemed to have unlimited bribe funds due to accounting tricks no one would believe me about till Time Warner took a 70 MILLION dollar bath on the aquisition - fuckers who did that got off scot-free, too, AND were major enablers of online predators by providing them with a protected learning environment, just ask Barry Crimmins, who's actions nearly got HIM arrested, and despite some heavily incriminating testimony and documentation in a full congressional hearing, nothing came of it - and after 20/20 stifled Luther, the feds began to endlessly harrass him, and destroy his life with hinted accusations when questioning his friends and employers, last I saw/heard he'd actually kind of changed sides (for the money, since he was fired and blackballed, and thus broke) and then disappeared.

There were plenty, plenty of others too, and one thing they all had in common was the fed jackboot coming down on THEM, while never seeming to ever really hit the predators in any meaningful way, although they were hell on wheels to arrest and convinct folks who reported them!

See, the mistake they all tried to make was to operate public, to go legit, and the way things were at the time you couldn't DO that, not without heavy political money backing you up, which is where Protect.org came from, a political PAC dedicated to fighting this issue.

S'funny, at the beginning of this, cause of the layers of smoke and mirrors and obfuscation I got called ridiculously paranoid, only for that paranoia to be validated beyond my worst nightmares, as when Tom Reedy of Landslide, Inc went down for 1400 years, consecutive, at the hands of Marcus Lawson, who was rewarded for that with a forced retirement and soon after US Customs was relieved of duty concerning this crime, and the work was thrown on civilian volunteers at NCMEC, and boy howdy do I got issues with that - but anyhow, the OTHER gateway front sites with their hands in that pie started shitting bricks, and since they couldn't go directly after a customs agent who was lauded as a hero in public, went after the loudmouth obvious bird-dogging for him, they offered a substantial amount of dosh for my identity and location, to which the site operator hosting my editorials at the time (Kelly H) rolled like a bitch and tried to sell me out only to find that all the contact info I had given her was fake, and nor was she the only one who tried to roll me.

Doomed to fail anyways, since at the time I was operating out of off-books motel rooms undergoing renovation and plugged into the net via the motel networks phone system (it was a national chain), as my partner at the time was a roving night auditor who had connections with the management.

It was a very darwinistic time, when the powers that be spent damn near ALL their efforts trying to silence the voices trying to bring this issue to public light, and none of them trying to bring predators to heel - even now they tout arresting a handful, but ask where the goddamn money went when they say how much that supposedly cost and they clam up real quick.
(It's been admitted in court they use less than 1% of their specifically budgeted funds for this, so where the hell does the other 99% GO?)

Nowadays folks are more aware of the problem, and have the false sense of security via NCMECs pathetic makework, but at least most kids know of the threat and how to defend against it, from each other if not from their parents, and with WWASPS gone, there's no real organisational structure to smash any more, just little pathetic rings of pricks, and religious wackos gone too far.

I guess one can call that a win, but I ain't never forgotten which side the feds took for most of it, and what they did to folk who earnestly meant to do right - nor can I forgive it, which is why Justin is in charge, cause my idea of "cooperating" with them bastards is not beating them senseless the instant we're out of public view.

It was and sometimes still is, the black ops secret opperative underground stuff that I have/had a hard time believing. I think its the way you word it possibly, it sort of toots your own horn. Maybe that's why it took me a long time to believe you, and sometimes I still have doubts about the super covert super secret government-doesn't-know parts. Oh well. All that matters is that you helped people and that you know things and have had experiences, can relate experiences, which I find potentially helpful to my own interests.

Actually I wanna comment on that, a bit, indulge me, if you will - I kinda need to vent, here.

Well, here's the funny thing about proper intelligence work - all that extravangantly clandestine bullshit, it's just that, bull. shit.

Most of our so-called intel folk, they have this, this... attitude, where they go out of their way to make every goddamn thing as rube-golbergian as possible like they're living in a spy novel or something and spend ridiculous amounts of money on wacky gadgets to accomplish things you could do in mundane fashion for twenty bucks or less, crap like Accoustic Kitty, for example.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acoustic_Kitty
I mean, even the PREMISE was fucking stupid, cats are natural anarchists.
So they blow all this money, and do everything in such a contrived fashion that not only doesn't it work, it actually attracts attention, while PLAYING at being covert, what they're really doing is screaming hey-look-at-me-how-cool-i-am, cause they seem to get off on that crap.

What might surprise you about good intelligence work is just how MUNDANE it is, when done properly - case in point, say... meeting a contact to exchange info face to face that you do not want put on paper, for example.
THOSE assholes would do some ludicrously roundabout chase all over town and swapping vehicles and all manner of really suspicious dumbass stuff that by it's nature attracts attention from people and possibly even law enforcement - more than one has had to pull credential and blow off local police who thought a dope deal was going down, AND not only does doing that bring even MORE attention down on the situation, the fuckers LIKE doing that crap cause it floats their little ego...
No, you wanna do it right, you meet them at a goddamn Dennys for lunch and slip the info into a conversation over a couple burgers and fries, and no one pays you one whit of attention, not even your server, half the time, it's as good as being invisible, hiding in plain sight and yet beneath any notice at all.
But noooo, they have to act like they're james fucking bond.

This started to blow up on them in the late 70's when Otis Pike and Frank Church started calling them to heel for it, you see.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Church_Committee

But what really took the cake, the straw that broke the camels back, as it were - was regarding the hostage crisis in Iran, when the fucking CIA could not provide actionable intel regarding the building that US contractors had built with public plans on file... despite this, the CIA somehow couldn't come up with the floor plans, nor even tell anyone how many entrances and where they were - too busy fucking with their supposed protectees and playing games, and it also revealed that most of the time they really DID NOT have any agents on the ground and were just making shit up.

Certain folk in JCOS went kinda ballistic about that, since the CIA has from the get-go been COMPLETELY UNABLE to do the one and only thing they were created to accomplish, provide actionable intel to our military and diplomatic operations - what information they have given has almost always turned out to be politically motivated lies and fabrications, and all too often it's gotten people killed, and worse - embarassed pentagon brass, making them look stupid when the CIA left them holding the bag after feeding them a line of crap.

So they got the wise idea to roll their OWN action-intel department (FOG/USAISA), seperated into HUMINT, SIGINT and trigger pullers, almost all of em seconded from their proper units, and with no documentation or paper trail whatsoever, but in fact it wasn't the bad guys, or even public accountability they were trying to hide the unit from, it was in efforts to hide it from the completely useless "official" intel folk cause office politics, jurisdiction, and all that other crap which would fly when those petty little bastards found themselves cut out of the loop.
That came back on them almost immediately because they were unable to procure air transport and cover, and had they done so I'd lay even odds they woulda successfully yoinked those hostages right out of the embassy - and following the complete bloody disaster when the whole shebang was internally revealed to be a POLITICAL maneuver to help hoist Reagan into office - not that most of the army guys were displeased with that, since he was quite lavish with funding - they decided to make that in-house department permanent in order to avoid being blindsided again, thus was born the Field Operations Group, shortly renamed the Intel Support Activity, which was kind of a deliberate misnomer in order to obfuscate what they really did, and of course the in-joke was that ISA really stood for "Insulate Superior Asses" since it was more or less founded on the cause of angry brass made to look like idiots by the CIAs bad intel.

They did play some footsie with the 902nd Military Intelligence, regarding illegal as hell domestic surveillence, but that was jacked, co-opted and more or less stolen by the NSA under jurisdictional office politics and eventually became Main Core, based on the PROMIS software, although the 902nd retained legacy access right up to when someone torched the building it was in.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/10/20/AR2006
102001641.html

To my eternal shame, and one of the ghosts that haunts me worst in the wee hours of the night, I did at one point help them get the original system that shit was based on up and running cause I was the only person affiliated with any of that mess who knew a damn thing about computers - of all the things I have to answer for when I reach the afterlife, that one hangs over my head like a goddamn anvil waiting to drop.

My own part in that mess came via that damn fool Lindyear and his concept for an enhanced aggression program, which was involved in trying to determine if both killer instinct, aka NBK-effect...
https://notes.utk.edu/bio/greenberg.nsf/a80806fbebea8dd285257015006e19
43/09613ff986b2a86885257599001505c1?OpenDocument

Could be trained and refined, as well as exploring the concept of whether it was possible to train, cultivate, or develop an instinct to continue the fight after taking damage which would normally render a soldier inoperative - he had a fascination with what he called the "Dead Mans Ten".
http://www.wayofnoway.com/articles_10seconds.html
So he managed to wrangle authority to grab a couple goons from otherwise useless units (like mine, a dumping ground for undesirables, which I was supposed to be paid a great deal of money to join as an incentive to stiffen them up by placing some decent troops in to set an example, another promise they broke), and a string budget which allowed him to explore the concept, and while he was more or less a well-connected idiot, he was smart enough to pre-select folk who'd already displayed the behavior he was looking for.
I played along cause at the time I'd just lost my only remaining family I gave a shit about and had completely embraced a nihilistic philsophy which was endlessly frustrated by the fact that I signed up to kill people for money, and wound up doing more painting, mopping, and useless bullshit I could have made more cash doing for a hotel somewhere, so I was seriously pissed, and he gave me an outlet for that - there was no level of sedation short of unconsciousness that would prevent me from being able to fight, which had shit to do with his training but he was quick to take credit for it, not that I cared, and hey look, free drugs and something violent to DO.

So when the spooks across the street wanted a triggerman for something (which never panned out) Lindy was quick to see the potential for tooting his own horn and increasing the prominence (and budget!) of his pet project and offered his star pupil, who was an ISTP rather than ESTP and thus more likely to "keep his fucking mouth shut" since I hardly never actually SAID anything at all, as opposed to the smack talking wackjobs he mostly wound up with - and so I wound up all but dumped on their doorstep like one of those faery-tale orphans in a basket, and then proceeded to have something of an epic meltdown when things didn't pan out and I got the impression they had been yanking my chain, resulting in *snicker* a mission-kill on the office they met me in.
Far from being appalled, they were impressed, and refused to give me back, which didn't upset Lindy too much cause it supposedly validated his asinine theories - even though they didn't have anything yet for me to do and I wound up running the office by default since I was in fact a quartermaster with decent admin skills, AND this cued them in that I was actually pretty smart, which in turn lead to affiliation with the crypto guys and the old dinosaur bastards who'd been more or less put out to pasture at Meade.

See, with this kind of thing, it tended to be a very isolated society, pyschologically destructive, hard on relationships and families, and so most of the folks by then who'd stayed into it were OLD, freakin throwback codgers who knew NOTHING about the technologies of the day, could barely switch on a computer (which resulted in the above mentioned foray with the 902nds equipment) and their idea of SIGNIT was panning open frequencies - I knew the tech, they knew the dirty biz, and in an old-school, done-right kind of fashion, especially regarding HUMINT, which our current so-called-intel folk regard as grabbing some random asshole and waterboarding them till they tell you what you want to hear.
There was also the "Black Shack", which was nothing more than a small building with a bathroom and some tables, cause most of them old bastards wouldn't drink in public cause of the possibility of "speaking out of school" when they were all in their cups (ie - drunk off their ass), and the horrific penalties which could be involved in that, so that's where they collected to drown their sorrows, and guess who was the poor schmuck elected to go fetch booze and mixers, ehe ?
I managed to learn a lot of stuff I probably shouldn't have by playing bartender to those old fools, since they assumed that by virtue of being allowed there I was cleared to know it, and someone new to tell all the old stories - which is how I knew about Ft Detrick and some of our other bioweapon fuckery, something not especially public till some of Detricks Anthrax got used as a terror weapon, most of that stuff is technically public now anyways, a lot of it having been exposed by various muckrakers and whistleblowers over the years, as well as a considerable amount of concern for certain jackasses who used to work with Scoop Jackson, the sumbitches we know today as "NeoCons" - the old school intel folk *KNEW* they were a threat, even then.

Which brings us back to the internal knowledge that the whole Iran hostage mess was in part political maneuvering to get Reagan into office, cause during that time the whole Iran-Contra thing blew open and it was duck and cover for these jerks as all of em held their breath hoping Ollie would keep his fucking mouth shut, and planning to do something drastic if he didn't - I hate Ollie, mind you, but there's a certain respect, he was a man who "stayed bought", and he took the whole fall rather than sell out his co-conspirators, a kind of loyalty you just don't see much these days.

But that brought up the problem of how to support those "heroic" Contras against those "evil" Sandanistas, who dared throw down our puppet dictator and act like something other than a US Puppet State - mind you by this time I was already pretty disillusioned, been rejected by college when the army reneged on their contractual obligations (ACF, GI Bill, my bonuses) to me, thus breaking the contract as far as I was concerned and I had already set in motion plans to bail out and bring some folk with me to escalate the private little battle I'd had going on against the hellcamps - I was reserve, rather than regular military, so this whole business was kind of a sideshow to me at the time anyways.

And so they decided to send in the goons, supposedly we were gonna go down there as training cadre for Contra Death Squads, although not in those exact words - HOW I was supposed to do that without knowing a lick of spanish wasn't something anyone seemed to care about, and that tripped my suspicions to begin with, compounded by a lack of any kind of E&E plan, logistics or pay arrangements - the latter being a particular "thing" with me, cause the ONLY reason I continued to play along with them at all, given that the army owed me eighteen months of back pay, several bonuses and college money, was that they paid me in cold, hard cash, you see.
But anyway it had a distinct odor of rodent all over it, and so we weren't ON that damn plane - which is a damn good thing cause before it even landed those idiots were written off, heaven knows what happened to them, and I've always suspected that was simply to eliminate folk who "knew too much", not that any of it matters now cause it's public knowledge, all the shit we pulled down there.
And sometime real soon after that, what little remained of the unit was officially terminated, and likely renamed/reconstituted elsewhere.

Anyhows, my hatred for the damn alphabet goons didn't actually start over what they do to their so-called protectees, but rather over the fact that they have never not once even tried seriously to do the one and only job which is their official function, and their halfassed hairbrained manner of doing so is pathetic and destructive - only later did what they do instead start pissin me off almost as much or more.
S'funny in an ironic sorta way from my end too, since I never *did* get to shoot anyone, and spent most of my time involved cleaning up their discombobulated paperwork, unfucking their screwed up computers, and playing bartender for a bunch of old coots who really shoulda been put out to pasture in a more final fashion, to be honest - there's reasons folk involved with that world tend to have suspicious deaths when they get in their dotage, you know.
Of course, there's more to it than that cause I did cultivate my own contacts, and yeah verily I did have access for a considerable period of time to all the paperwork and most of the computers, but most of our so-called secrets are either laughably un-secret, or so pathetic they ain't worth the bother cause the primary reason for most classifications is to avoid someones embarassment for lookin like an idiot - there was also the matter of a certain respect cause not every secret has malicious purpose, although IMHO we shouldn't have any outside of diplomatic services, and even then they should be open-secrets.

So while I did score lots of knowledge and useful skills, I never did get to use them in practice beyond maybe intimidating a couple folk who talked too much - but they came in damn handy later against the Hellcamps, which is doubly ironic because Synanon recieved some money from the intel folk back in the late 60's, and it's splinter The Seed recieved an outright federal grant in 1971, which then became Straight, Inc, and recieved even more government money, under several later names, PFC, CEDU, WWASPS - and all the while the intel boys watched and studied those methods, which would be, and are, currently being used at Gitmo, and other rendition sites, often enough in the same facilities WWASPS used to use.

When they say familiarity breeds contempt, they're being polite - with this kinda thing, familiarity breeds an all consuming hatred that often goes beyond all reason and sense, cause I really, truly, *DO* hate those fuckers, almost every primary source of social misery, diplomatic disaster, military misadventure, outright atrocity... they all trace back to the same source, our very own so-called protectors, first and foremost among them, the alphabet goons, and this is especially noteable with drugs, the CIA brings em in, and the DEA makes our lives hell for it, both of them problems pretending to be their own solution.

Of course, these days I'm little more than a weary old security guard who does a pretty creditable variation on The Kingfish on his downtime - gettin old, quite battered and developing a mild combination of middle age spare tire and security guard donut-butt, lol...
As I am fond of telling the locals, well sure I was hell on wheels in my prime, but that was twenty YEARS ago and them've been some hard years, you know.
I don't think they buy it, though.

... You're doing it again ... oh well. I hope your venting was helpful to you. I do get a kick out of the term "alphabet goons" though.

Well yeah, I feel a little better - I think the point I was trying to make though, is that it's all essentially one huge veil of abject bullshit draped over what amounts to really mundane, fundamental stuff, like watching what people do, listening to what they say, and in the modern era trolling their blogs/social media, stuff that DOES NOT require expensive gizmos and behavior right out of a cheezy spy novel.

Did you know that the best, most actionable intel we've gotten in recent years didn't come from waterboarding, but from nothing more than a single gesture of simple human kindness ?
Quote:

The most successful interrogation of an Al-Qaeda operative by U.S. officials required no sleep deprivation, no slapping or "walling" and no waterboarding. All it took to soften up Abu Jandal, who had been closer to Osama bin Laden than any other terrorist ever captured, was a handful of sugar-free cookies.

http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1901491,00.html

All these fancy gadgets, all this classification, all that money, all those freedoms restricted...
NONE OF IT IS NECESSARY.
It's *ALL* bullshit, you understand ?
And worse, counterproductive bullshit besides, we threw down Mossedeigh and propped up The Shah, they throw down The Shah and replaced him with Khomeni, so we propped up Saddam and started a fucking proxy war, and where did that wind up, but with us having to fight the very bastard we propped up - and thousands, millions killed...
FOR NOTHING.
Or at least nothing that benefits us.
It's all bullshit, useless, harmful bullshit, every ounce of that whole world - so why the hell should we continue to finance it to the tune of billions, billions we can USE to feed the poor, house the homeless, rebuild our decaying infrastructure ?

That's what I am pissed off about, really.

Sounds like you've got some good reasons to be pissed off.

The Quadruple S will be way better at everything than the CIA is. :)

Meh, a monkey could do a better job than the CIA, a STONED monkey.

I thought about it some, cause I "had a mad on" when I wrote mosta that, and you know what it really is?
An excuse for grown men to play make-believe, a crack-brained version of cops-n-robbers, cowboys-n-indians, to indulge in ridiculous fantasies with real toys, real power, and real people, and therein lies the problem.
I mean, I wouldn't be too upset if they sent em off to disneyland or something, but our government gives them damn near unlimited funding and authority to pursue this agenda, and no effective oversight whatever since it's become obvious that all of the work Pike and Church put into calling them to heel was meaningless.

I mean, really, seriously... oh look, a microphone disguised as a dragonfly, how cute, ain't it cool, and it only cost seven million dollars for thirty bucks worth of parts... or how bout this one, a bunch of cave dwelling sheep herders are gonna blow up an airplane with a liquid binary bomb, oooo scary...

REALLY?!!

The scary part isn't just that we handed such crazy, delusional folk limitless power and money, oh no, the scary part is that they're so completely invested in it that most of em ACTUALLY BELIEVE THAT SHIT.
Folks like ole Tailgunner Joe McCarthy, and JJ Angleton.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/James_Jesus_Angleton
We still haven't recovered from McCarthyism, and Angleton was one of those primarily responsible for turning our own so-called protectors into abusers and predators of the very people they were supposed to protect, and don't even get me started on that ratbastard Kissinger.

So essentially we have a lot of really fucking out-there wackjobs with unlimited money, unlimited authority, and no ability to call them to heel, to which my answer is as simple as it is elegant - cut off the money.

That actually WORKED here, locally, regarding the police, who were at the time completely off the leash, we started a ballot motion to cut their funding and they threw a total hissy, started refusing to respond to calls, went completely rabid on asset-seizure and traffic "enforcement", and then took out a couple ads and billboards which were downright threatening in nature, playing right into our hands cause it made them LOOK like a friggin protection racket.
The motion was overwhelmingly passed and immediately followed by ANOTHER budget cut in response to that specific behavior in their efforts to forestall it, and then a later incident in which they crashed and robbed (via asset forfeiture provisions) a charity poker game caused a third budget cut, and the public holding the axe over them with glaring, angry eyes.

Since then, their professional behavior has improved tremendously, and as noted in the case of Nick and Jim, they've begun to reach out to the community and connect with them, in part cause they NEED to - they don't HAVE an armored car to send, the tac team can't afford machineguns, and without the toys, that whole lets-make-war on the community game isn't any fun anymore.
http://www.annarbor.com/news/sheriffs-department-ypsilanti-township-se
e-early-signs-of-success-in-summer-crime-plan
/
(Gotta say it, Nick and Jim are pretty cool, which coming from someone who dislikes law enforcement, says much.)

So why not apply it to the alphabet soup nazis ?
Cut em off the public tit, make them indulge their damn fantasies on a tightly controlled, publicly accountable budget and have the GAO *audit* that shit regularly, while we-the-people stand by with an axe and chop it down every time they fuck it up or overstep themselves.

Might they do something..."drastic".. in response, maybe - but honestly would it be all that more dangerous than letting them run wild ?
I mean, these ARE the dumb shits who GAVE Ramzi Yousself and Khalid Shiek Mohammed a *live freakin bomb* complete with expert to wire it up, and let them set it off under the WTC back in 1993 - short of nuking us I can't see what more harm they could possibly do, and if they can't AFFORD the stuff to do it with, no longer have the authority to requisition or demand it - that threat kind of goes away.

Damn sure we could put that money to better use.
Quote:

Though Congress mandated last week’s disclosure through the 2010 Intelligence Authorization Act, DNI James Clapper seemed to have no problem complying. The administration could have waived the requirement upon finding it would harm national security. Instead, it continued a string of budget-related announcements. Last fall, Clapper voluntarily disclosed that the total intelligence spending for the year, including for the military, exceeded $80 billion. A month later, he announced that the budget for the National Intelligence Program—the non-military component of intelligence operations—would be placed under his control by 2013. The entire intelligence budget is currently under the Defense Department’s purview.

http://harvardnsj.com/2011/02/intelligence-budget-request-revealed/
Yep, that's right, eighty BILLION dollars - for agencies that cannot even do the job assigned to them!

Good heavens, how many schools could be built, how many teachers could be properly paid, how many poor people we could feed, how many homeless we could shelter, how much misery could be ENDED, with eighty billion dollars...
And we pour it down a fucking rathole to indulge the fantasies of lunatics.

It's time for that to stop - we got a whole government showdown-shutdown fracas over the budget, and yet no one seems to be willing to bring the axe to bear on this, the republicans because they WANT to crush the peons and put them in their place by hacking up social programs, and the gutless democrats don't want to be seen as weak on defense - seriously ?
Who's invading us, cause I don't see any army on our shores and our overseas adventurism has jack diddly shit to do with national defense, and everything to do with INDULGING THESE FUCKIN LUNATICS IN THE FIRST PLACE.
I mean the damn Qeadas, at least the Mujahideen, came to prominence on our efforts, and we propped up Saddam to begin with, as I pointed out, so it seems to me that those alphabet bastards are CREATING enemies, which conveniently gives them endless excuses for more funding and more power.

So, I say we draw the line, everyone says we need to cut spending, well how about eighty billion worth, right there - shit, cut even HALF of it and we don't need worry about social security or medicare for the forseeable future, AND you don't have these nimrods propping up yet another batch of crazies to become a threat to us years down the road - I say that's win-win, yes ?

And now, now is the very BEST time to pull that rabbit out of the hat, right now in the middle of a heavy budget battle, get all up in the case of your supposed "representative" and *DEMAND* they put it on the table, bring as much political might as you can to force their hand, cause according to the "piece of paper" WE are the motherfuckers in charge of this country, they work for US, and maybe a little reminder of that is not unwarranted.

Dingell doesn't really need reminding, wasn't all that long ago he had to go all the way to Washtington with hat in hand, begging for some of our own money back so we could fix that goddamn bridge on Stadium before it fell completely as it already had chunks of concrete falling out of the bottom of it, but after the bums rush that was delivered politically upon Grayson for suggesting such a thing, he's a little skittish about it - although given he's prolly gonna retire soon, it might be worth throwing down the gauntlet as a final hurrah, but I'd like that to be more than a futile token gesture.

So I quite earnestly suggest y'all bend the ear of your so-called rep and chew them out for this, cause there ain't a one of us as tough as ALL of us, and that's a will they can't defy.
Although they can ignore it, and you also need to think about what you might do then - my own suggestion in regards to that matter involves pie.
