Damn! Yellowstone, it's river AND Montana are so beautiful; "we" just keep screwing things up...
Quote:

Hundreds of barrels of crude oil spilled into Montana's Yellowstone River after an ExxonMobil pipeline beneath the riverbed ruptured, sending a plume 25 miles downstream and forcing temporary evacuations, officials said. The break near Billings in south-central Montana fouled the riverbank and forced municipalities and irrigation districts Saturday to close intakes.

The river has no dams on its way to its confluence with the Missouri River just across the Montana border in North Dakota. It was unclear how far the plume might travel. Cleanup crews deployed booms and absorbent material as the plume moved downstream at an estimated 5 to 7 mph. "The parties responsible will restore the Yellowstone River," Mont. Gov. Brian Schweitzer said.

A 600-foot-long black smear of oil coated Jim Swanson's riverfront property just downstream from where the pipe broke. "Whosever pipeline it is better be knocking on my door soon and explaining how they're going to clean it up," Swanson said as globules of oil bubbled to the surface. "They say they've got it capped off. I'm not so sure."

ExxonMobil spokeswoman Pam Malek said the pipe leaked an estimated 750 to 1,000 barrels of oil for about a half-hour before it was shut down. Other Exxon officials had estimated up to 42,000 gallons of crude oil escaped.

Duane Winslow, Yellowstone County director of disaster and emergency services, said the plume was dissipating as it moved downstream. "We're just kind of waiting for it to move on down while Exxon is trying to figure out how to corral this monster," Winslow said. "The timing couldn't be worse," said Steve Knecht, chief of operations for Montana Disaster and Emergency Services, who added that the plume was measured at 25 miles near Pompeys Pillar National Monument. "With the Yellowstone running at flood stage and all the debris, it makes it dang tough to get out there to do anything."

Brent Peters, the fire chief for the city of Laurel about 12 miles west of Billings, said the rupture in the 12-inch diameter pipe occurred late Friday about a mile south of Laurel. He said about 140 people in the Laurel area were evacuated early Saturday due to concerns about possible explosions and the overpowering fumes. He said they were allowed to return at about 4 a.m. after fumes had decreased.

Goodbye, kind world (George Monbiot) - In common with all those generations which have contemplated catastrophe, we appear to be incapable of understanding what confronts us.

"ExxonMobil spokeswoman Pam Malek said the pipe leaked an estimated 750 to 1,000 barrels of oil for about a half-hour before it was shut down. Other Exxon officials had estimated up to 42,000 gallons (1000 barrels* at the high end) of crude oil escaped."

I wonder if we will ever find out what it really was.

From what I hear, and mind I have no independent verification of this - some of the folk who have those centrifuge type units were en route the minute they heard about this, since it's a smaller, closed area where they can be fully tested in a semi-controlled environment.

Here's for hopin they work as well or better than expected - it'd be a major coup to not only clean up the river, but then sell their own reclaimed oil back to them.

Frem, I hope so, too. We need all the help we can get, since oil spills will keep on happening over and over, and oil companies have nothing invested in actually finding any cleanup technology that works!

Here's hoping...

Oil is actually good for the environment. It helps give everything that slick, shiny look!

Did anyone from the oil company give that one yet?

What do you have against Italians?

Sorry to interject a theme from another thread, but you're the one who brought it up.

Seriously, why does Rick Santorum scare you on the Left so much, that y'all would phony up a vulgar word, just to defame him ? ( And yes, that's exactly what has gone on here, so don't even attempt to deny it. )

If only. If only they WERE full of it. Of their own oil, I mean.

Jam a spigot down their throats and crank open the valve. At least then they'd have some worth! I wonder if you could get a whole barrel of oil into an oil company CEO...

Santorum scares me about as much as Cynthia McKinney scares you. And he's got the same chance at getting elected President.

I ridicule Santorum to point out how insane the GOP really is, that THIS is one of what they consider their "mainstream" candidates. Pointing and laughing doesn't mean I'm scared of him; it means I'm amused by him. You really suck at reading people, don't you?

Not with on the whole "phony up a vulgar word" thing, since I had no part of that. Are you implying that anyone who reports on an event is responsible for the event?

I'm not aware of having anything against Italians. Is Santorum Italian? If he's not an American, he can't run for the presidency of the U.S., can he? I thought he claimed that he was an American. Maybe I'm mistaken in that. Italians have some great food; I'm of German heritage, but don't care for German "cuisine" - I much prefer Italian. They make some amazing cars, too, as long as you don't mind walking. Here's a pretty good threadjack about Italian cars and the "spin" you get from their makers...

Someone took the initiative to phony up a vulgar definition, and get it spread across the 'net. And that you're perpetuating that juvenile endeavor, tells me that you're at least complicit in that sort of nonsense.

You claim YOU'RE not scared, but your actions say different. Regardless of who did it, there's an extreme level of fear involved here. I'd just like to know what's point. Seems like over kill, imo.

Rick's grandfather came over from Italy. So, yeah, he's eligible to run. No hint of an issue there, at least.

Oh, there's a flood. Washing that stuff out fairly quickly, from the looks of it.

What has any of that to do with an oil spill?? You guys need to get a room or something so the rest of us can have actual conversations...

Sigh...oh, get real Raptor, or at least TRY to. You're reaching too far now. Nobody "on the left" "dreamed up" the Santorum thing on the web, any more than they "dreamed up" teabagging. It's conveniently funny, that's all. And fear him? Who said they were afraid of him? I don't pay him any mind, he's just one of the more minor characters floating around out there trying to convince people they're valid candidates...there are quite a few of them, but only a couple of actually conceivable candidates. The rest aren't worth paying attention to unless they're amusing, like Palin and Bachman. Whatever makes you think we fear him is beyond me; mock him, yes, just as anyone who does something stupid is mocked. That's about it.

Ooops, I see Mike answered that one. "What he said" regarding Santorum.

You're complicit in the torture of detainees in Gauntanamo? You do try to perpetuate the juvenile claim that it's not torture because we renamed it, so you MUST be part of the torture group, right?

I've taken no part in the "santorum" scandal. I note that there IS such a thing, but is it your claim here that the reporting of an event is equal to complicity in perpetrating the event?

So why do you assume I have something against Italians, if Santorum is an American? Do you have something against Americans?
