‎...he who warned, uh, the...the British that they weren’t gonna be takin' away our arms...uh, by ringin' those bells and um...makin' sure as he's ridin' his horse through town..to send those warning shots and bells..that, uh, we were gonna be secure and..and we were gonna be free..and we were gonna be armed.

Okay, that's old news. Today, she appeared with a sympathetic Chris Wallace to explain herself in her usual contrite way. Oh, wait - no she didn't; she doubled down!

Quote:

You know what? I didn’t mess up about Paul Revere. Here’s what Paul Revere did. He warned the Americans that “the British were coming, the British were coming.” And they were going to try to take our arms so got to make sure that, uh, we were protecting ourselves and, uhm, shoring up all of our ammunitions and our firearms so that they couldn’t take them.

But remember that the British had already been there — many soldiers — for seven years in that area. And part of Paul Revere’s ride… And it wasn’t just one ride. He was a courier. He was a messenger. Part of his ride was to warn the British that were already there that, “Hey. You’re not going to succeed. You’re not going to take American arms. You are not gonna beat our own well-armed, uh, persons, uh, individual private militia that we have. He did warn the British.

And in a shout-out, gotcha type of question that was asked of me, I answered candidly. And I know my American history.

Except that she doesn't. He wasn't "warning" the British, he was trying his hardest to not be noticed by them at all.

And of course, she completely neglected to explain the whole "bells an' shootin' " part of her earlier answer.

Keep digging, Sarah. The people stupid enough to watch FauxNews as their main source of "news" will believe anything you tell them, they really will.

This reminded me of when Michelle Bachman spoke and gave praise about the patriots of Lexington and Concord, except she was in the wrong state at the time. Both ladies ought to stay away from using American history as part of their politics. They just don't have even the bare basics down yet. Pretty embarraskin' I'd have to say.

I can't BELIEVE she doubled down on that! The country truly has gone to hell; the word is out, it doesn't matter, it just doesn't MATTER what you say on the right, people will nod, smile and applaud whatever it is!

Thanx for that; I rarely watch news on the weekend, hadn't heard about that one. Not sure which it does more: amuse me or depress me!

Mmm, I read the link, and that about says it all:
Quote:

This is a hell of a get by Charles Johnson. Starting on Sunday, as Sarah Palin kept explaining that her version of the Paul Revere "Midnight Ride" was historically accurate, Palin fans emerged on Wikipedia to "fix" the Revere biography. Palin's taking heat for saying Revere "warned the British"? No problem: Just add the line in italics.
Quote:

Revere did not shout the phrase later attributed to him ("The British are coming!"), largely because the mission depended on secrecy and the countryside was filled with British army patrols; also, most colonial residents at the time considered themselves British as they were all legally British subjects.
That revision is deleted with the explanation "content not backed by a reliable sources (it was sarah palin interview videos)." The people who keep cleaning this up are getting sort of bored now.

- I would strongly suggest locking this page until the Palin controversy blows over and her supporters lose interest in trying to rewrite the page to conform with her erroneous version of Revere's ride.

- Wiki rules apply to Palin fans the same as anyone else; they are free to add material to the page as long as it is reliably sourced. IIRC, it does look like Palin's supporters have a published source that partially agrees with her version of events, although the concept of relating Revere's ride to gun control or 2nd Amendment rights is nonsense. However in her defense, I think Palin herself was using that as a metaphor - not a literal interpretation of this event. In any case, Palin doesn't claim to be a professional historian so her words don't belong on this page.

- If you mention Sarah Palin you're doing it wrong. This article is about Paul Revere, a historical figure who died nearly two centuries before Sarah Palin came to prominence. She has absolutely nothing to do with the article. I would expect to see contemporary sources and theories proposed by modern historians, but Sarah Palin is neither here nor there.

- Sarah Palin is intent on destroying wikipedia, isn't she? First we had huge wars over the blood libel article, now this. But Obama's supporters do not support claim that there are 57 states! Amazing!

The original video, from Channel 7, really makes it look like Palin got a historical question she wasn't expecting, and then flubbed it. The way she grits her teeth on the phrase "riding HIS HORSE THROUGH TOWN!" is agonizing, for all involved. And look, if someone asked me, on the spot, to explain exactly what happened during Paul Revere's ride, I'd struggle a bit to access my elementary school memory banks. The twist, with Palin, is that she has a bona fide army of supporters who will sic themselves on anyone and anything that threatens to damage her image.

So hey, do we want to crow about how immoral those who support Palin...no, wait, ALL conservatives...lie and will go to the lengths of changing Wikipedia so it confirms her mistakes as accurate? I don't think so. You see, I and many others recognize reality; there are numnuts everywhere, of every size, shape, color and political ideology, who will do stupid things to prove their point. What the heck, we've got one right here! He happens to be on the right, too, but that doesn't make ALL Republicans or ALL conservatives as bad as those who changed Wikipedia. (I know thinking like that is a hard one for you to grasp, Raptor, just forget about it since it wouldn't mean anything to you anyway.)

I just gotta put in one snark, tho'; do you think they'll try to get their hands on school books and change THEM, too, especially given the recent textbook kerfluffle regarding textbooks in Texas and all...

Experts back Sarah Palin’s historical account
You betcha she was right!

Sarah Palin yesterday insisted her claim at the Old North Church last week that Paul Revere “warned the British” during his famed 1775 ride — remarks that Democrats and the media roundly ridiculed — is actually historically accurate. And local historians are backing her up.

Palin prompted howls of partisan derision when she said on Boston’s Freedom Trail that Revere “warned the British that they weren’t going to be taking away our arms by ringing those bells and making sure as he’s riding his horse through town to send those warning shots and bells that we were going to be secure and we were going to be free.”
Palin insisted yesterday on Fox News Sunday she was right: “Part of his ride was to warn the British that were already there. That, hey, you’re not going to succeed. You’re not going to take American arms.”

In fact, Revere’s own account of the ride in a 1798 letter seems to back up Palin’s claim. Revere describes how after his capture by British officers, he warned them “there would be five hundred Americans there in a short time for I had alarmed the Country all the way up.”

Boston University history professor Brendan McConville said, “Basically when Paul Revere was stopped by the British, he did say to them, ‘Look, there is a mobilization going on that you’ll be confronting,’ and the British are aware as they’re marching down the countryside, they hear church bells ringing — she was right about that — and warning shots being fired. That’s accurate.”

Patrick Leehey of the Paul Revere House said Revere was probably bluffing his British captors, but reluctantly conceded that it could be construed as Revere warning the British.

“I suppose you could say that,” Leehey said. “But I don’t know if that’s really what Mrs. Palin was referring to.”
McConville said he also is not convinced that Palin’s remarks reflect scholarship.
“I would call her lucky in her comments,” McConville said.

Meanwhile, the state’s Democratic Party held a thin blue line on the issue, insisting on mocking Palin despite a brief historical review of the matter. State party chairman John Walsh wise-cracked that the region welcomes all tourists, even those with “an alternative view of history.”

“If you believe he was riding through the countryside sending text messages and Tweets to the British, still come to Boston,” he said. “There are a lot of things to do and see.”

But Cornell law professor William Jacobson, who asserted last week that Palin was correct, linking to Revere quotes on his conservative blog Legalinsurrection.com, said Palin’s critics are the ones in need of a history lesson. “It seems to be a historical fact that this happened,” he said. “A lot of the criticism is unfair and made by people who are themselves ignorant of history."

By the way, historians say Palin's full of crap:

http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/sarah-palins-account-paul-reveres-midni
ght-ride-shot/story?id=13773745

Quote:

Sarah Palin said that Paul Revere warned the British during his midnight ride in 1775. Historians beg to differ.

"He didn't warn the British," said James Giblin, author of "The Many Rides of Paul Revere." "That's her most obvious blooper."

...

So according to multiple accounts, it would be inaccurate to say that Revere warned the British and rang bells on his way to Lexington. Still, questions remain, like the logic circulated on Twitter -- by everyone from Palin advocates to Steve Martin (jokingly) -- that the "he was warning the British" explanation makes sense "because all the citizens WERE British. There was no America yet." What about that?

"Well that's sort of bogus to me," McConville said. "That's not how someone should read or discuss the situation."

Giblin offered a simpler answer. "Oh," he said, "that's just a fudge."

With bells ringing and guns blazing, Sarah Palin galloped all over the story of Paul Revere's midnight ride last week. But she's not the first person to flub the factual details of this stirring moment in American history.

In comments last week, Palin told supporters in Massachusetts that Revere's ride, replete with warning shots and bells, was partly to let British soldiers know that a locked and loaded American revolution was on the way.

Historians say her argument is not well-armed: Secrecy and stealth were crucial to Revere's ride, in order to warn revolutionary leaders Samuel Adams and John Hancock that the Redcoats were coming to arrest them.

Ok.

Sarah Palin was not wrong in the "spirit" of Paul Reveres ride.

She could have phrased it better, tho.

"He was warning of the British advance. And in doing so, made it clear-as-a-bell, that we were armed and ready to fight."

Might have been a better statement.

But that ain't what she said... Alla sudden you want to talk about the " spirit" instead of the actual words. I thought only Liberals did that...

His " spirit" was not to warn the BRITISH. He was trying to rouse the minutemen, so they could mount a surprise attack in resistance to the British. So he wanted to WARN the British? "Hey, redcoats, we're gonna get our guns and form up at Concord bridge and Lexington green. Ya better not march to there unprepared." That makes NO SENSE...

Thank you, NewOld, I read that and both agree with him and was reminded of some of the facts I have forgotten, too. I'm guessing most humans have a habit of interpreting history through their own beliefs and mythology, but I think he's absolutely right on with the following:
Quote:

But it is also dangerous when people "cherry pick" pieces of the story to suit their purposes, when the foot is cut to fit the shoe. A sanitized but incomplete, or worse, wildly inaccurate, version of history can be cited to support just about any political stand. Like scripture, the words and deeds of the Founders, mixed with bits and pieces of American mythology, are trumpeted to support positions on every issue from individual rights, states' rights, gun rights or gun control, to taxes, immigration, public prayer and, most dangerously, taking the nation to war.

When American history is gutted, innocently, ignorantly or deliberately, the outcome can be deadly. If we are told that there is no separation of church and state in the First Amendment, that the Founders worked tirelessly to end slavery or that the Revolution was all about taxes on tea, we are hearing half-truths or outright fabrications. Our extraordinary history deserves better. The truth shall set you free.

Gee, who have we heard trumpeting those last ones? Kinda says something in and of itself, that it's those on the RIGHT who keep giving us versions of "history" which supposedly back up their stances.

I'm gonna look and see how many Dems have skewed history--I'm sure it's come from both sides, but recently, mostly only one.

Well, a quick search brought only that Obama said our "national motto" was "e pluribus unum" when it's actually OFFICIALLY "in God we trust". A big deal was made of it, including a letter from Congress to Obama chiding him. Also that he left "the Creator" out of quoting the Declaration. That last one counts as "omission for political reasons", I grant you.

But that's the only two I came across, and those aren't fabrication of history, just a mistake and a misquote--and how many of us knew what our "official", "legal" national motto was?

So a three-page search of Google found no Democrats otherwise lying about our history, certainly not in ANY way, shape or for the way Republicans have been doing consistently of late. Anyone?

FREMDFIRMA

Factually it *IS* E Pluribus Unum, Niki.

All that "God" bullshit was shovelled in by McCarthy and his cronies back in the fifties, hell the Pledge of Allegience, which I still woulda considered fascist bullshit, used to be "one nation, indivisible..." and one of the first mottos on our currency was "mind your (own) business".

But then, it's always been a Republican agenda to bring down the wall between church and state - not that the notion has prevented collusion as well as it should have, what with faith-based iniatives which serve as naught more than a vehicle to shovel tax monies into religions (which then actually help NO ONE, but themselves), and certain officially-approved religions getting tax breaks, but unapproved ones being left swinging... but at least the IDEA holds.

For now.

OF COURSE the righty wing-nuts wanted to make a big deal out of Obama not citing "In God We Trust" as a national motto. For all their bluster and bullshit about being "strict constitutionalists" and "originalists", they actually want you to forget that "E Pluribus Unum" ("From the many, One.") originally WAS the de facto national motto.

As to leaving "the Creator" out of the Declaration... Did he have the right document? 'Cause that's one that tends to completely fluster Republicans. John Boehner famously flubbed it, and Herman Cain did so to an even worse degree. I'm sure his rabid supporters are furiously editing the Wiki entry on the Constitution to make it match his version, though. ;)

But that's the only two I came across, and those aren't fabrication of history, just a mistake and a misquote--and how many of us knew what our "official", "legal" national motto was?

That wasn't a "mistake", and the Rappy claimed that the Declaration thing was "a tiny gaff" [sic].
