Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

It occurred to me as I was falling asleep the other night, as a giggle ONLY mind you. Katrina (and before that, Andrew), the Gulf Oil Spill, the floods, the tornadoes...if they all happened on the two coasts, I'll betcha there'd be an evangelical minister out there somewhere saying it was God's punishment for all the liberals in those places, or all the gays, or somesuch.

So should we be saying all that stuff the Midwest has suffered might have been God's punishment for Bush, and/or what the right has been doing for the past few years? You know, the hate mongering, anti-Muslim, anti-gay, anti-poor measures and speech, the class warfare, etc.? D'ya think?

(I'm just teasing, but I'll betcha, if it had happened in liberal areas...)

Well, we're having the frikkin mythical deluge in Utah right now, so's not like I can argue it or anything. Part of me suspects it's more because I live here than because of the beliefs of anyone around me though.

(Yes, in Utah, 5.33 inches of rainfall in a month is a deluge)

Looks like New Mexico is having an even rougher time drought-wise, though even coming from Utah it's hard to imagine New Mexico can get LESS rainfall than usual.

Pfft, that's nothing. Colorado got 500 inches of snow in certain areas the last few months. The mountains are just buried. And here along the front range, it's rained the last five out of seven days. You can't even start to comprehend how freakish this is for a place that usually averages 12-20 inches of precipitation in an entire year. That said, I wouldn't call it biblical or anything, at least until all that snow melts off and floods the canyons.

We share a weather system. Utah had a record snowpack this year, and still has 400% of it's normal snowpack compared to the March average. And it's June.

We had maybe two days where it didn't rain in the entire month of May, because of a lingering storm pattern and a weird jet stream. The highs have been in the fifties down in the valley, meaning it's been 30s still up high. The mountain snow hasn't been melting well, it's still over 160 inches at Alta. And we're drier than Colorado. You want a flood watch, we've got it.

Massachusetts get a couple every year. Not a real big problem. However, one of them did hit my hometown. Fortunately all of my family is safe. Sadly, a few people lost their lives. Hard to be glad that it was only a few.

Maybe. The theory does predict increased storm activity in some locations.

On the other hand, I could blame the jet stream, which has been lingering over Utah for the last month, and the odd storm patterns coming from there seem to have caused the outbreaks in the south, midwest, and possibly the northeast even past the Appalachians.

The weather has been oddly unsettled the last six months across the northern hemisphere.

The third option is that tornadoes can sometimes occur in places where they aren't normally expected. I've heard tell of tornadoes in England.

Well here it's been raining prettymuch nonstop since I got sick, several streets have been flooded but our dept of public works has been on top of it for the most part - on the plus side it's kept the creepers away while I was out of service, but this place looks like a swamp right about now.

I enjoy road racing, and participated on an amateur level for a few years, but I've never been able to get too excited over F1. Seems like the racing version of soccer to me, with a lot of running around, a couple of minutes of excitement, and half the cars out with mechanical problems at the end. Stuff like Touring cars or ALS seems more interesting to me.

Also, I've driven on the banking at Lowes, and gained a lot of respect for the NASCAR guys running with several times the horsepower of my CRX.

Maybe we can just blame ultra-religious types for using disasters to further their own crap (or get attention), but the fact remains that ultra-religious types are frequently given to blaming those who suffer from disasters FOR the disasters. Wow, Byte, I for one DO know how dry Utah is (for the most part). We’re accustomed to about 47 inches normally, and we’re way over that. Our seven reservoirs/lakes (from which we get almost all our own water) have been over capacity since December 29th—unheard of. And Rose, we had a bigger-than-normal snowpack this year, too---we were at 128% of normal way back in March!. Weird, given if anything, it’s a La Nina year, which should be dryer. I fear for flooding, come “real” Spring. Sending good thoughts.

And yeah, Sig, I’ve been hearing about the Mass. tornadoes. We’ve had a couple in No. Ca. the past few years, which was pretty much unheard of before.

You don’t think the weather patterns are changing or anything, do ‘ya? I wonder what could cause that??

In regards to Niki's post, I'm generally confused by both the types of people who would declare any natural disaster the wrath of God and the recipients deserving, as well as the people who believe that God spared them (and therefore didn't spare the others). Both have rather unfortunate implications.

I'd rather not encourage such people with speculation on other disasters.

Though now your bringing up the storm warning for the northeast makes some sense in the context of the original subject, Wulf. I think I didn't understand your meaning.

The places the disasters have been happening are NOT everywhere but the Coasts, little man, they are the Midwest and the South. I think those from places other than that and the Coasts might take offense to you considering those areas the whole country, don't you?

Hey Happy, I didn't know you had a little brother too, my little brother is nine, growing up so fast, I wish I could slow it down a little, not stop it, just slow it down a tiny bit. Brothers who are still little are lots of fun.

I tend to never claim something is God's punishment, because how would I know if it were? Crap happens to everyone, some parts of the country are physically more vulnerable than others, but eventually everyone gets hit with something, life happens. I'm not saying this to be callous, I'm saying it to say that I don't think any place is immune, some are more prone to certain disasters due to location, but terrible things can happen to one and all. Our weather patterns have definitely changed in the last few years, where I camp used to open at the end of April or beginning of May, now it doesn't open until Memorial Weekend, it may have even been delayed one more week this year, not sure, haven't heard.

I do think that now and again throughout history God has used weather and natural events to intervene in things, but it isn't my place to say when those times have been, all I can do is speculate. Plus that's just really lacking class to say it aloud to people you don't know, even if you think it might be true secretly.

But yeah, not my place and not something I like to think on much.
