Christopher Walter Monckton, 3rd Viscount Monckton of Brenchley (born 14 February 1952) is a British politician, public speaker,[1] former newspaper editor and hereditary peer. Formerly a member of the Conservative Party, Monckton has been the deputy leader of the UK Independence Party since June 2010. In 2011 he stood as lead party-list candidate for UKIP in the Scottish Parliament constituency of Mid Scotland and Fife.

In 1999, Lord Monckton created and published the Eternity puzzle, a geometric puzzle that involved tiling a dodecagon with 209 irregularly shaped polygons called polydrafters. A £1 million prize was won after 18 months by two Cambridge mathematicians.[22] By that time, 500,000 puzzles had been sold. Monckton also launched the Eternity II puzzle in 2007, but, after the four-year prize period, no winner came forward to claim the £2 million prize.

No, so far the only thing that's happened is that a pro-independance party has won a majority in the Scottish Parliament. Which means that they will have a referendum to secede from the UNITED KINGDOM not the Commonwealth of Nations.

True, but you can't tell me that the Scots aren't a wily and half-crazy people. The plot to steal the stone of destiny wasn't hatched in a day, you know.

They have stockpiles of claymores they've hidden up there, often since 1746, just in case they ever had to fight for their freedom again. And everyone will be thinking, are these dress-wearing nutcases really going to bring swords to a gunfight, and everyone will underestimate them. They've been bidding their time for generations. >_> Least, that's what I've heard.

I wonder how long before they stop paying taxes and tribute, and how long before the monarchy notices.

On a less speculative note, maybe Northern Ireland should secede from the UK and become part of the commonwealth. Might cut down on some of the fighting. Maybe. Will the UK have to change their flag?

Byte, :)

I don't think Northern Ireland (based on the majority of people, about 2/3) wants to sucede. I think more people will have to become nationalists for that to happen. Now granted, nationalists want to rejoin the rest of the island and you're suggesting becoming commonwealth, like Canada, but I don't know that the people who like being part of the UK would want to do the commonwealth thing either.

I hear that the IRA types in NI are stirring again, bummer, they never acomplish anything with that behavior, it doesn't get them what they want so they ought to stop because all that happens is people die and get upset.

No, they're not all dead...they were ACTORS. That's a Wulf, has no meaning, and I'd expect PN to come up with something a bit better (which is not to say I'm encouraging him).

Who here expects titles from PN to reflect any actual reality? Show of hands, please...

By the way, the IRA can't be getting active again. They're not Muslim, and we all know the ONLY current terrorists are all Muslim, right?

Well, of course the ACTORS aren't all dead - but then again, the ACTORS didn't exactly secede, either. :)

William Wallace and his merry band of heathens ARE all dead, however. And it didn't really work out too well for them either, as I remember it.

William Wallace lives on... In our hearts. And in the many folktale stories we tell about him sticking it to the man. Rob Roy too.

Though darnit, a perfectly good movie had to be tainted up retroactively by Mel Gibson.

Kwicko, don't be besmirchin' the names of good and honest highlanders!

You're half right though. William Wallace died, but at that time the Scottish cause was actually triumphant. They retook Edinburough castle, drove out Edward and his goons, and put a Scottish king on the Scottish throne. They remained independent until King James, a Scotsman himself, inherited both the Scottish and English crown. Then it kinda went downhill from there.

Really wasn't until the LATER war with Bonnie Prince Charlie that got us rear-ended, though. And how.

Damned straight! Far as I'm concerned, everything Gibson did except the Lethal Weapon series (and not even the last two of THOSE) is shtick. Anyone ever notice how MUCH gore his movies have? Even Bruce Willis' Die Hard series didn't get as bloody as any Gibson movie, including the ones he directed.

I dislike Mel Gibson on so many fronts, the least of which is his acting "talent" (I use the word advisedly)...

I actually thought that was one of the neatest things I've ever seen PN post.

I love Braveheart, and I think Mel Gibson did a fine job as William Wallace, Mel Gibson may have some problematic philosophies on life and he may not be the nicest person, but I thought he did good in the movie. My neighbor from Glasgow said he did a better Scottish accent than most actors do when playing Scottish roles.

And Byte's right, it took a while after Wallace died, but .scotland did win its freedom. In the Braveheart movie Robert Bruce was portrayed as being not the best, but in other versions of the story he is a brilliant strategist, warrior, leader and king for his people. And yeah, Scotland remained free for some 300 years after until the 1600s.

Eeh gads, he was ruined when he came to America to act. His Australian films are very fine indeed, especially Gallipoli and The Year of Living Dangerously. Mad Max and Mad Max 2 are both very good genre films in which he was pretty cool.

I gotta give you that one. "Year" was an amazing movie...never saw Gallipoli, but judging from "Year", yes, he had a better handle on it then.

Now? Forget it. I'll tune out any movie I see on the TV list that has Gibson in it...and not just because of his religious beliefs (!) or his racism. For the same reason I won't watch a Costner movie; "Dances" was magnificent, as long as you took it for what it was, but in both cases, the egos have LONG outstripped the acting AND the person, in my opinion.

p.s. D'Onofrio, too, tho' I freely give him his efforts in "Men in Black"...there, ego HELPED!

I pretty much agree. Never liked him once he got the mullet, quite frankly, but I give the guy a little cred because of his earlier work and because I know he suffers from pretty severe mental health issues. And he was so incredibly, eye wateringly beautiful when he was young and I am a sucker for young men with dark hair and very blue eyes.

Gallipoli is a wonderful film, Niki. I can recommend it. It's an egoless performance from Mel.

I dunno... I like Mel in "Payback" - it was pretty true to the old pulp fiction Richard Stark novels it was taken from. Hell, he even toned it DOWN a bit - Parker was quite a bit rougher in the books than Mel's "Porter" character was! Love the stylized look of the film, too.

And Costner had some good early work. "Fandango" stands out.

Quote:

p.s. D'Onofrio, too, tho' I freely give him his efforts in "Men in Black"...there, ego HELPED!

That I just really don't get. D'Onofrio has some fantastic work - "Full Metal Jacket", "The Salton Sea", "Steal This Movie", "Mystic Pizza"... Maybe you're just seeing him in roles where he plays an egomaniacal asshole, like his portrayal of Orson Welles in "Ed Wood", or his role as Bobby Goran on "Law & Order: Criminal Intent".

But yeah, it seems like everyone's got some actor they just won't like, no matter what. I had issues with Kevin Bacon for a long time, because he was a dead ringer for a guy I grew up with who was a complete and utter shite. Just found out over the weekend that that guy got killed last year. I always figured he'd get his in a drug deal gone wrong, but he ended up getting hit on a motorcycle, and then drug for a few blocks. Can't say I'll miss him, but I wouldn't wish that kind of ending for anyone.

Well, they wouldn't need welfare within the context of England's financial system once they had their own.

Riona,

I like Mel. I forgive his sort of anti-semitism because I know how people get there: People like PN analyze it to the point of seeing the jews in the warmonger crowd, but not enough to see the non-jews behind them, or the jews who are on the receiving end of this sort of evil, so I take it as "an error" rather than real evil intent, like the Nazis or something.

A read a post in another forum, written by a scottish person making the counter-argument quite well:

Quote:

Scotland could be as prosperous as Norway, Denmark, Switzerland with enough revenue from oil, gas, renewable energy and other industries to invest in a fund to look after future generations. The idea would be to invest revenues in a permanent reserve fund and use the interest to fund public services, pensions and other expenditure for years to come.

According to UK government estimates only about half of the reserves of oil in the North Sea have been extracted so far, which means that there is still enough to support a population of just five million people.

An international convention has determined that the North Sea north of the 55th parallel is under Scottish jurisdiction, which means some 90 per cent of the UK's oil and gas reserves are within Scottish waters.

As far back as 1975, experts recognised that oil could make an independent Scotland one of the richest countries in Europe. A government report saying as much was labelled incendiary, classified as secret and hidden away for 30 years until it came to light at the end of 2005 as a result of Freedom of Information legislation.

In addition to oil Scotland has as much as 25 per cent of the EU tidal and wind resources, which if managed properly could deliver a second energy windfall for the country.

I personally would be sad to see the UK break up, but it's up to the Scottish people whether they want to go their own way or not. I don't know if they, or we would be better off - or whether that is even the main question. I reckon Scotland has benefitted in many ways from the union, down the years - just as England has: the North Sea oil for e.g has certainly done a lot for our prosperity compared to where we were in the 60's and 70's (some credit goes to Margaret Thatcher as well). So maybe now is a good time to part ways.

It's not personal. It's just war.

I agree, funnily enough. We have a devolved parliament in both Scotland and wales. Those countries can vote on their own issues, which I feel is correct. But then they can also vote on issues in UK parliament which only affect the English, which is totally wrong.
Throughout modern history, Scotland, despite voting for primarily Labour candidates, end up being run by a Conservative Government. I would love to see an Engish parliament taking care of just English issues.
But despite that, I still feel that we should have a UK legislature that takes decisions that are applicable to the WHOLE.
Deviolution is a good idea, provided that the English get their own issues represented by an English Assembly, but I wouldn't like to see a UK break up. That is a step in the wrong direction, IMO.

Yes, Mike, that’s probably the answer, as I’ve not seen any of the other movies you listed.

I had I guess you’d call “issues” with Kevin Bacon for a long time, too, mostly because I didn’t think he could ACT, was just a pretty face. I mellowed toward him after Flatliners, then recently I watched some movie---I forget the title, it’s about a normal Joe Citizen who takes on a gang. In the end he becomes just like them and man, it was a magnificent piece of work. A movie I will never, EVER see again because I’m not into that kind of material, but it made a believer out of me.

PK, that’s pretty much comparable to some of our states having threatened to secede this past election; how they’d survive without the rest of the country and the government would be almost amusing to watch (except for all the innocent people it would hurt, which I’m sure you wouldn’t want to see in Scotland, either). Woops, I see Mike responded similarly. Obviously both of us saw the comparison!

But thank you KPO, for the information you provided. That does put a different light on it, and I found it interesting. Like you, I would be sad to see it, tho’.
