Corporate Internship has always BEEN a scam, just cause one in a thousand actually lands a job - and boy howdy they never get tired of holding it up, without telling you about the 999 who didn't! - doesn't excuse what is essentially neofeudalism and indentured servitude.

Most young people with any SENSE learn this early, when the local fast food place which was the only place that'd hire them fires them on some trumped up excuse because it's cheaper to replace them than give them that five cent raise.

Those whos families have money and didn't have to wage-slave, learn it later, in this fashion - and again when the corporation they do finally get hired into (via resume, blackmail, nepotism, various chicanery, but NEVER via internship) fires them on some trumped up excuse a couple days before those stock options vest...
HAHAHA SUCKER!

Which describes Corporate Employment of any kind, and thus when some nimrod comes to work with a weapon and starts killing folk, it rarely surpises me, and the only part of it that really saddens me (I have a little trouble feeling sympathy for cutthroat, backstabbing, dirtdiggin, corporate ladder climber co-workers, mind you..) is that usually the parties of management responsible ain't the ones who wind up taking a dirt nap.

This is also why I do all work of any kind via contract, and one that clearly spells out the responsibilities of both parties with severe non-compliance penalties, which are doubled in the case of intentional malicious breach.

It also bothers me a bit that these folk don't READ the damn things before signing them, we're having a to-and-fro with one shithead who's trying to play "But I didn't know!"... he signed it, it was on HIM *to* know, bleh.

Of course, when the Government feels no need to honor its contracts (ask those fucked over by Social Security if they think the deal was honored, neh ?) of course the Corporate world is gonna follow, all the way down to the personal.

As always, shit rolls downhill from the top.

I have no problem with internships, a lot of people do them to get some experience, get to know people, make connections. I have no problem with this, it seems like a normal part of the last year of college/post college experience, it doesn't bother me. I never had an official internship but I was volunteering at NAMI before I started getting paid. Fact was that I loved my job with them and they realized that they'd have a hard time finding another phone woman as devoted and reliable as I was, so they started paying, thank goodness.

I just have to ask, though I'm sure I'll regret it, do you know what the definition of grant is? Because I don't know about anyone else, but I didn't go into any debt on my grants.

Unpaid internships are despicable. I've known a few lucky souls who got the paid kind, but of course those are the hardest to land because everyone is after them. A whole lot of people I went to school with were placed in internships as part of an art degree program, and they all complained about it. These companies get a mess of cheap (or free) temporary labor, and make you thank them for the privilege. Could be that fewer companies are offering paid internships lately, hard to know, but the practice itself? Not new, not new at all.

Compound sentence. Grammer class is now banned in USA, just like the 10 Commandments.

Grant = Unpaid Internship

Student Loan = Slavery

My friend was cheated when his PhD thesis was rejected for political reasons, now he owes $150,000 on a $30,000 student loan.

Teabaggers will cheer this. Unpaid jobs are their favorite kind, and the reason they're fighting for the abolition of the minimum wage (it's well-known in conservative circles that minimum-wage workers are the real reason the deficit is so high, and the reason CEOs are having such a hard time getting by).

Unpaid jobs are almost as good as the teabaggers' nonexistent job-creation record. But that's what they get for following Bush's disastrous economic plans...

Grant = Unpaid Internship

So... "No," then.

I'll try to explain. Loans are what put students in debt, because they're the things that pay for the majority of the educational expenses, and they need to be paid back. Pell grants are smaller amounts of money that don't need to be paid back. Loans are what "enslave" the students, you see. Your first statement almost made sense, in a histrionic way, except you referred to grants as enslaving students with debt, instead of loans.
Unpaid internships are situations where someone works for a company for no money. This is entirely different from both loans and grants. Setting one equal to the other... I honestly can't make heads or tails of that, not even after adding all the salt for the melodrama.

Your logic is, as ever, broken. Your insults are, as ever, ineffectually juvenile and very nearly nonsensical. The proof that you, yourself, never went to college seems to be piling up. I eagerly await the next piece of evidence that proves you never graduated high school, or indeed elementary school. I trust you will not disappoint.

Ok, he's got a point on that one thing...

See, our contract software is a template, and due to a few changes in the law over the years there's a section of it which isn't applicable, so we deleted it - and for whatever reason the software still puts a blank space just that size in the bottom third of the form, so someone has to manually clean up with the backspace key.

And in these days of super-dense legalese and unenforceable EULAs and sixty page "agreements" even the lawyers don't understand - I have taken a bit of *issue* with folks NOT reading a three page contract before they sign it....

And so have taken to randomly including bizarre terms and conditions into that space just to see if anybody notices - I never expected anyone to actually default, although in this case it wasn't malicious, and I sure wish I had been there when THAT provision came to light... oops.

He owes me "Ten pounds of locally caught fish as an appeasement to the feline gods" - this is what I get for trying to be funny.

I think imma give him a free pass on THAT one, but he does still owe us a stiff penalty/noncompliance fee - although...

If he *does* come up with the fish (hoo lordy just the idea is making me giggle) I'll eat the damn fee just for the sake of that much amusment, especially when the OTHER clients go digging out theres to see what THEY signed!

Oh, well said Lili...and quite civil to boot. I gave up responding to that idjit, much less being civil or rational. It doesn't get through. Bear in mind he has said QUITE clearly that he's here for no other reason than to get others' goat, so he has no investment in making sense, being civil, or using one brain cell. Never figured out why he bothers to post at all, seems a ridiculous waste of time if that's all he's here for (well, except for those who have no life, that is...).

Given I HAVE a life, and a reason for being here, it's an even worse waste of my time to bother reading or responding to his idiocy, so I rarely do.
