Is that going to be like those old emergency broadcast system alerts they used to have? I haven't seenone ofthose in a long time. The only one I ever saw that was an actuall alert instead of the usual test ones was once at my grandma's, there was a thunder storm coming, not really an emergency but I was excited because A) I love thunderstorms and B) it was the only time it was a real "emergency instead of a test.

I am snickeringly reminded of how V managed to effectively commandeer such a channel in the movie...

That said, the EBS system does have its uses, back when I was living in Flint the local EBS popped a warning about a recently sold propane tank which was (I forget) improperly filled or screwed up in some way that might cause it to explode if used.

Said tank was discovered and properly returned within fifteen minutes, thankfully before any damage resulted.

Anyhow, as the Gov never does seem to learn, you build in a backdoor like that, you leave a gaping hole for exploitation, I figure some prankster makes em well aware of that within a couple months of doing so.

Obama contacted the producers of V, that's why it was taken off the air and "reworked" was according to his wishes, he wanted to silence some of the ideas in that, which of course led to in the last few eps of the original run, their somewhat blatant snarking of Obama.

Oh my goodness, I knew it!! Remember when V had that episode that was remoniscent ofthe swine flu thing? And it got postponed to not be on again until April? I knew that wasn't just coincidence! So they changed the script recently because_he or _his didn't like it? That is rutted up if its true, don't you think? I mean its a show for goodness sake, that is part of what scifi is for, to criticize and put forth alternative views about the current system. Did they miss the memmo?

Well if they cancel V I'm going to have one very upset woman at the day center I help at on Mon. That's her very favorite show, it was really cute because I mentioned to her that I love Firefly, and the next week she came in excited because her dad and her were flipping channels and saw it and J said, "Oh look, there's Anna!", but then she figured out that it was my show, just with "Anna" in it as someone else, she does understand that actors play different roles after all.

I think if V gets canceled I'm calling Obama on the red phone to give him a talking to.

I'll see if I can find the story, because ABC printed the letter in retribution, because that's like an extreme overreach. But I gather they must've gotten this before they filmed the scene where Anna says to her interviewer that she just wanted to make sure that there was nothing broadcast that would paint us in a negative light. I cracked up, but yes, it was real. There was a bit of a spat between the administration and ABC after that, they snubbed him, they bumped his next speech for an episode of "Lost" IIRC, maybe the premiere, but it was a snub, and I was pretty sure it was a response to this.

(Obama then went through something very similar with FOX, he kicked them out of the whitehouse press conference saying they were "not a news agency" and then they did what the press does when you insult them, and ran every story they could until he caved and let them back in.)

Yes, and it is true. I hope they haven't purged the internet of the story ;) ABC ran the story themselves, so it was not from a conspiracy blog or something.

There are a lot of news stories here from various sources, but I don't think it contains the letter from Obama or his comments.

Perhaps keeping up with current events is too close to "criticism" which is apparently no longer allowed, and a script rewritten to draw parallels to a more modern era under the thumb of an overzealous Bush administration, when Obama saw Bush policies under a banner of Hope, he was unable to tell them from his own, because even he can't tell the difference ;)

Someone sent me a story this morning, about a gay guy who is claiming he did drugs with Obama in '99. The guy's story was undoubtedly false, but the guy's wikipedia entry had been pulled apparently several times, and the had the story had been repeatedly purged from the media. I don't think the gay guy's story is true, but this isn't how a free and fair society operates.

But back to V, yes, they rewrote the storyline to avoid any parallels which might reflect on anything the administration had planned. I thought "whoa." this is like saying the administration can do no wrong.

"Any similarities between President Obama and the aliens in V is purely coincidental", that made me laugh, ... really hard. Come on people, its a scifi show, they are supposed to critique current affairs.

I don't really watch V myself, I did at first but it is a hastle to remember when its on, try to follow it without anyone else to help me keep from getting confused (my dad loves the old one, but after several episodes decided he didn't fancy the new one, he's kind of scared of Anna, seeing Inara like that and all), etc. But I bet its a good show and J watches and looks forward to it every week. This week I asked J what was going on on V, she said that Diana was on it, I asked her who Diana was, she said she was Anna's mom, I said "Anna has a mom?" because I'd never seen her. J just looked at me and said "Of course, everyone has a mom". It was really funny for some reason.

Obama is being a goofis, ... wait ... I bet the NSA just read that and will show up on my doorstep tomorrow morning. :) Sigh

I see wikipedia agrees with you, but citation needed? So cite? I can see the parallel, but it does defeat the purpose of Can't happen here if the fascist overlords are not themselves Americans.

Also, yes, V for Vendetta.

In the "V" remake, I guess they use their own broadcast, but in the 1980s I was pretty sure they hijacked the emergency broadcast. The letter V has revolutionary connotations I guess ;)

I haven't seen the reworking, but it was good social commentary to begin with.

And yes, Obama is really attacking anyone who says he attacks his opponents ;) It's sort of like when saying that you're the evil lizardmen (Actually, there's a funny story about this, but I'm way too tired to tell it right now.)

Rion, we still get those emergency broadcast things out here (plus the stupid tests). Usually it’s a child kidnapping alert, since we don’t get the kind of tornadoes, etc., other places do, and it’s not possible to send out an emergency alert for earthquakes! [biggrin]

Frem, I knew you qwew talking about the movie V for Vendetta, and yes, I loved that too! Never seen “V”—-is that “our” Marina?? If so, guess I’ll have to tune in. Has anyone mentioned that Summer’s got a new series? Looks like crap, which saddens me.

It’s totally stupid to make this about anyone “taking over” communications. It’s no worse (or better) than the stupid colored “Homeland Security System”:

stupid, yes; conspiracy, no. Wouldn’t work.

...and I find the comparison between FauxNews and “Fawkes” a real putdown...on Fawkes.
