Keeping order in every verse

There was a BBC news report last night highlighting the plight of the Haitian people, one year after the earthquake hit. Basically, the whole nation is STILL 6 feet under rubble;400,000 are still homeless;Cholera is rife throughout the country and there is no plan in place to even START the rebuilding process.
All this is despite the International Relief Fund raising about 4 Billion pounds of charitable donations;95% of which has NEVER reached the country.
So WHERE is this money. Probably stuck in the hands of the one or two palace owners and Government officials and the rest taken up in administration costs.
Although I feel deeply for the poor people of that stricken land, I have decided that as from now, no more of my money will be going to ANY charity from now on. I want to know where my money ends up and not have it stolen from me. My charity will definitely be staying right at home from here on in. Do you guys have any thoughts to add?

I never send money, oh hell no.

I send supplies and/or equipment, and I send it DIRECTLY to them who need it, usually via personal contact in the region if I can find one who is trustworthy and speaks passable english, or can finagle it through auto-translation.

The most difficult of those was a three way convo between a crew that only spoke dutch, another that only spoke french, and me, who only speaks english, and badly enough that my foreign friends who DO speak english mock me for it...

Of course, I have an ace in the hole for many translations since I know a girl who speaks like eight languages fluently and 2-3 more in bits and pieces - only she's not always available cause she took my advice and is in college with an eye on joining INTERPOL.

Anyhows, supplies or equipment are a good bet, and while maybe still tax deductible, in a day and age where your charity can suddenly be declared a bunch of terrorists, and implicate YOU as a "material supporter" (something I dread is eventually gonna happen with me and RAWA) it might well be a better idea to not link the donation to yourself so closely, either.

DREAMTROVE

A lot of the money went through the Clinton foundation, and very little of that ever came out. It will be used to elect Clintonistas to power. Mostly here, but probably also in Haiti.

If you want something done right, do it yourself. Don't send money to someone who says they're going to help Haiti, if you want to do something, get your ass to Haiti.

Exactly. Esp when it comes to foreign countries.

I give to a charity. But the charity is 1 km from my house, and I go regularly to check on the kid I'm sponsoring for physical therapy. I know he's getting 100% of the money I send, with no admin costs taken out.

It is unfortunate that you can't trust charities anymore. But it is a good thing to become personally involved in the giving, I believe.
