It's quite simple really. Women have an inherent fear of commitment. They ignore the 'nice guys' in favor of a jackass that they know on some level they will have to eventually break up with. Then they forget this and suffer the consequences of their actions, medicating with copious amounts of ice cream. Dating can only work properly if both partners are lying. The male must know when to pretend to be a jackass and when to pretend to care. The female must lie to herself so she can continue to make bad decisions while placing way too much stock in advice from friends who know little to nothing of the situation and who's advice is completely based off of wishful thinking.

My girlfriend calls me 'her prince' and it kinda makes my skin crawl. I'd rather be the knight (shiny armor optional). I often tease her, saying "you must be a damn princess, you're the most sensitive person in the world," which makes her giggle. Of course, she is a psych major, so she probably ain't all right in the head anyway.

No one group has a constitutional protection against discrimination. The constitution sees us as individuals with no sex, creed or color(exception for blacks)...The civil rights laws are unconstitutional, because there is no remedy for those hurt by said laws(white men)...My ability to be a racist, sexist, or bigot in the use of my property is more important than your feelings. There is a bigger picture of liberty at play here. Take these no smoking in bars laws that pop up everywhere. Should that not be up to the owner? If non smokers don't like it they can go to a nonsmoking bar, thus making the other owner lose business....free market type shit. If I had a bar I wouldn't let in any asians...i think they are scary and sneaky, and might break the joint up using their kung-foo.

See what I mean? In some people the princess fairytales persist throughout their entire life, and I think in most straight women it's operating on SOME level, if not overtly. It may not even be an incorrect perspective of reality, all stories are true in their way, but it may be one that comes with unreasonable expectations and which has broader scale social consequences.

The going after the bad boys is most likely hormonal, and whether they do, or not, varies in the same manner. It must be like a battle between the hormone side versus the fairytale side.

It'd be interesting to assess, do guys have something similar going on? I notice lots of guys like to be protective, versus when they're trying to go after what they want. The Knight in shining armor thing appears to be common place, both the princess mindset and the knight mindset have to come from the same social influence, and these are in direct conflict with the hormone and instinct directives.

Actually agree that it's foolish to think that everyone has to or will get along with everyone else on the basis of race, religion, or sexuality. At the most basic level, probably the only thing we should be prosecuting in terms of hate crime is stuff that would already be illegal - vandalism, death threats, or attempted violence, likely with a stiffer penalty.

At the same time, there's something to be said about equal access to services in at least a public arena. Whether that access already exists or not for race and gender is debateable, though with gay union/marriage or gay military service, I think it's apparent it doesn't.

I'm also reasonably sure that even 50 years ago, I would have gotten into college, gritted my teeth through appraisals on womanly intelligence, and become a scientist anyway on my own merits. I'd also like to think I'd have gotten this same job on those merits, as I have the credentials for it. But I recognize others might not have had the same opportunities, the same credentials. Maybe you shouldn't be able to force a business or college to take employees/students if it doesn't want them; but turning minority groups away seems unethical, too.

it's all primal. We live in an animal world and just don't admit it. Business is a very primal agressive world, not at all like science. This is part of why corporations function so poorly, the bosses are invariably alpha apes, and the techies are some neolithic freak of nature that the primal ape doesn't understand. Part of him would probably like to clobbed the techie over the head out of the primal terror that things are happening ehich he can't understand, but he recognizes that whatever it is the techie just did, is essential to his survival.

The terror is shared, since the techie cannot fathom the primal battle, and when the enter into it they usualy get thrashed.

Actually I do have relationships, just not with anyone involved in my work, and as a protective (overprotective more likely, I do tend to put my paramours on the pedestal, yadda yadda) measure, she must know NOTHING beyond the broadest, most general concept - and yet being left out of the loop on something which is obviously so important to me tends to put a tremendous stress on a relationship, especially with someone who doesn't visibly display emotion in the conventional sense.

I will say that liking someone has very little to do with "choice" however, and me being able to act in direct contravention of those feelings if need be isn't exactly normal human behavior, not as I have observed it to be anyways - but then I don't even barely comprehend most of the hangups other people have about that sorta thing.

And I make sure they know, such as is possible, what they're getting into right up front - I have a stock, prepared "If you fall for me you're an idiot" speech which my ex says is correct in every detail, but gets disregarded nonetheless.

Anyhows, emotions aren't a choice, what you do with em maybe is, but not havin em, no.

didnt mean you didnt have relationships, i meant that you didnt have them with the people you worked with.

ethics trump action, and if this is possible, it means action is a choice. for frederick douglas or dred scott, being black was not a result of action, so no choice is involved. we treat religions as a.choice, even if in practicality many have now choice over it, and even if members of some religions are genetically identifiable.

sorry im having a bad day week year life and have to bail on this discussion, its consuming time and adding stress.

Scalia is saying that an amendment has to be passed. Like the Equal Rights AMENDMENT was supposed to do. Once the Constitution is amended, then it cannot be declared unconstitutional. Get your panties in a wad if you want, but aim your ire where it belongs, Congress and apparently, unions.

lol, most of what I have said in this thread is pretty tongue and cheek, taken from personal experiences or observations, and then made silly. I believe a real relationship is only functional if there is trust, and that can be a difficult thing to build, 'specially if one or both involved has been burned before.

I think DT is the closest to right there, the best way or proceed is to 'not care' as much as possible. It reminds me of some of my high school drafting and architecture teacher's words of wisdom. "Chasing girls is like chasing taxi cabs. Don't waste your time another one will come around in a minute."

Thinking back I wonder for the umpteenth time why the hell I did go to school to become an engineer or something. This music think just ain't workin' out.
