"We'll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false." -- William Casey, Reagan's presidential campaign manager & CIA Director (from first staff meeting in 1981)

I dunno, Frem - "Evil Done Efficiently" has a bit of brutal honesty about it which is darkly refreshing.

I'd probably vote for someone running on that ticket before I'd vote for someone who was telling me how perfect they were, especially if they were doing so in flyers and ads full of "rented kids" that aren't even theirs!

It appeals to a core group who agree that government is a necessary evil, so why not at least have it be a more EFFICIENT evil?

The modern definition of "socialist" is anyone who's winning an argument against a tea-bagger.

That was some "indefinitely"! Personally, I think they caved due to pressure, which is a shame.

It would be nice if they had pulled him aside and, along with the chastizement for breaking their rules, asked him to tone down his ugliness in referring to others, but that's just a dream.

I kind of disagree that MSNBC is a "news" operation as opposed to Fox being a "political" operation; I think they both are almost solely political. The difference for me is in how they go about it; Fox being quite happy to make up lies, report unsubstantiated material, and do things like the faking of the video of a rally. I think MSNBC makes more of an effort to verify their facts, but to me they are every bit as left leaning in their way as Fox is right.

is interesting to me; I'm surprised they scrutinized it, given surely THEY are fully aware that they are liberally-dominated, it shouldn't come as any surprise. If they were serious about being a news organization, they'd have done something about it long ago. I'm not aware of any political pundits or analysis on their station, certainly.

One COULD make the argument that Fox has some shows which are actually devoted to news in general, while MSNBC is almost exclusively politics, except that Fox allows their ideology to creep into what they tout as pure "news", so it kind of evens out, in my opinion.

I wish they had taken time to consider someone else as a replacement for Olobermann, as I find him an embarrassment to the left (much as the "Ed Show" is) and would like more objective reporting, which I believe Maddow represents. I'm also surprised to find it is still the most popular show on MSNBC, as that tells me that many on the left get their opinions more from him than from others, which I think is a shame. No surprise, I guess, AFs on the left are as susceptible to watching what reinforces their own beliefs as anyone else. Such is life.

Oh, well, now we get back to Whozit's obsessive hatred of Olbermann, but that's just a fact of the "life" of FFF, too.

Not sure why you think it's a shame that they responded to their viewers and supporters...

Maybe, maybe not. How sure are you that such a meeting DIDN'T happen?

They both get called "news operations" because at some point during the day (usually early morning and around noon) they put on actual NEWS, instead of pundits and editorialists. They also both put on those aforementioned pundits during primetime.

I don't follow your logic on this, or maybe you misstated something. OF COURSE there are political pundits and political analysis on MSNBC - their primetime weekly lineup consists virtually entirely of such punditry.

The idea that it's somehow *wrong* that their election-night coverage had some kind of bias is laughable. Of course it had a bias! They're a liberally-biased network. They've made no secret of this, ever. It's not like they call themselves by some goofy tagline, something incredibly inane and stupid and completely unbelievable, like "fair & balanced".

Again I say, watch MSNBC in the morning. It's nothing but headlines. I think you're basing your impression of the entire network off a few hours in the evening.

Different strokes for different folks. I find Olbermann's snarkiness refreshing, and Maddow sometimes a bit shrill. But I'm not calling for her replacement, because I can always just turn off the show if I don't like it.

The idea that one MSNBC pundit is more objective than the others is somewhat laughable, too. Rachel is pretty extremely biased, too, it just shows in a different way.

Mike: I think it’s a shame because I would rather they abide by the principles in their contracts rather than have one set o reactions to one person and another to another, which has been noted elsewhere.

No, I’m not sure that such a meeting didn’t happen. The only way to suss that out is by his behavior in future. I’m allowed to dream, but I highly doubt such was the case, given his and others’ rhetoric in the past.

Yes, I only watch TV at night, so I concede you’re probably correct. I will merely accept that, as I spend my mornings either here or doing other things. I’m content; I get my news from here (which I then check out) and the news services on their internet sites, which I peruse daily. The amount of “newstainment” I’d have to sit through to get actual news from the TV—-not to mention the commercials—-isn’t worth it for me. I’d rather pick and choose which articles interest me, which I can do on the websites.

As to election night, you misunderstood. I have no problem with each network’s election-night coverage being done by their respective pundits; my surprise was that they would feel any need for “scrutiny” of it, given that MSNBC is so left leaning that surely they KNEW it would be dominated by liberals.

I wasn’t “calling” for Olberman to be replaced, I was expressing a wish and my opinion. That has no effect on anyone besides us here, and is merely my opinion.

I do think there’s a difference between the shows on MSNBC, and that some are more objective than others. I tend to watch Matthews (tho’ I change channels when he starts talking over people!) and Maddow because they spend less time (relatively) spouting and more time on editorials where they have their facts check, and which they put forth in a somewhat less biased way. It’s all relative; O’Reilly is smarter and less insane than Beck; it’s all relative.

Ah - point taken. Yeah, it's kind of surprising that they act like they had to go back and review it to see if *maybe* there was some liberal bias in there somewhere. I mean, really? Did they not KNOW their network was a left-wing bastion? Did they just wake up on Friday and go, "Heyyyy... who let all these LIBERALS into the studio?!"

No, this has been a conscious effort on their part, and they've admitted as much, crediting Keith for changing the direction of the network, much as Jon Stewart is credited with changing the very nature of The Daily Show (anyone remember the Craig Kilborn days of the show, when it was all pop stars and "Five Questions"?)

Understood. My opinion is that we need MORE opinions on the left, and more viewpoints and styles of presentation. Maddow puts some lefties off; Olbermann does as well. Maddow may be MSNBC's Hannity, where Olbermann is their O'Reilly. But that would make Ed Schultz their Limbaugh... ;) Different strokes; it's all relative. For some reason, I can't stand Dylan Ratigan.

I did like that Lawrence O'Donnell shot the one guy down when he was on Matthews's show last week. Some right-wing pundit said that O'Donnell was being used by the left because he's a progressive and a liberal, and O'Donnell just flat-out shut him down by telling his straight-up that he's not a "liberal" or a "progressive", but a full-on Socialist. I figured he'd be fired by morning, but he seems to still be there, and I gained respect for him just for having the guts to say it out loud.

Yup, I change Matthews then, too. Once he and five guests are shouting over each other, it becomes an information black hole; the conversation becomes so densely packed that not even a coherent idea can escape!

Yup, now you understood what I was saying. It made me smile when I first read it; I had precisely the reaction you did. "Like...duhh?!"

I don't like Dylan Ratigan either, not sure why, and Schultz = Limbaugh? Right on. But I see no Beck on the left, even Schultz, whom I dislike intensely, doesn't get nearly as whacked-out as Beck!

Me, I'd rather see more OBJECTIVE pundits (is that an oxymoron?)...or maybe a network which offers pundits from both sides at least, so we can get both pictures and try to figure out what the "real" story is in between !

I agree about the Matthews Black Hole (good way of putting it...tho' an analogy which has a lot more NOISE in it would be better), and I didn't know that about O'Donnell...that took balls!
