One last thing on the election. We had to big CEO candidates here in California: Meg Whitman (for Governor), ex-CEO of eBay), and Carly Fiorino (for Senate, ex-CEO of
Hewlet Packard). Whitman spent $140 million on her campaign...she can afford it, she's loaded...and they both lost. Makes me smile.
Quote:

On a day that millions of Americans in other parts of the country turned the electoral map red by electing a sea of Republicans, California voters stayed true blue.

And, in a year where a lot of voters wanted to throw the bums out and get rid of career politicians, Californians rejected a pair of wealthy and former Silicon Valley CEOs in favor of a couple of longtime politicians.

The rest of the country was experiencing a revolution. In California, it was more like a "retro-lution." Familiarity did not necessarily breed contempt. In fact, it helped put a couple of high-profile victories in the Democratic column.

Democratic Sen. Barbara Boxer, who has been in government for 34 years -- as a county supervisor, member of the House of Representatives and U.S. senator -- defeated her Republican opponent, former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina, who electrified the GOP base.

Meanwhile, Democrat Jerry Brown -- a former governor who has spent 24 years in politics serving as everything from a community college trustee to mayor of Oakland to attorney general -- beat his Republican opponent, former eBay CEO Meg Whitman, more handily.

The California governor's race was always Whitman's to lose. And, sure enough, she lost it -- in spectacular fashion. At the beginning, Whitman had at least five things working in her favor. She was battle-tested thanks to a tough primary with a Republican challenger. She had an enormous amount of personal wealth, enough to allow her to spend a whopping $140 million of her own money on the quixotic bid to become chief executive of the Golden State.

She was running against a candidate who had taken all sides of so many issues that it wasn't clear which parts of the Democratic base he could count on for support. She was running in a year when, in most places, the Democratic brand was wildly unpopular. And speaking of brands, she was affiliated with one -- eBay -- that is generally well-respected and elicits a positive response from the public.

So then why did Whitman lose? For one thing, she never connected with voters and that hurt her when the Brown campaign started pushing the message that she was this rich empress who lived in a bubble and couldn't relate to average Californians. For another, she never proved she was up to the job of being governor of the nation's most populous state.

As one California voter on CNET put it: “Meg came across as someone so different and out of touch with most Californians who are struggling to make ends meet yet still are interested enough in the future of the state to vote.”

As for Fiorina:
Quote:

The Republican tidal wave that swept the country wasn't strong enough to defeat Democratic Sen. Barbara Boxer, although the liberal lion of California politics had to admit to feeling its force during a grueling campaign against former Hewlett-Packard Co. chief executive Carly Fiorina.

Celebrating her 11th consecutive election victory, Boxer told hundreds of cheering supporters that Tuesday's win was a special one because of the opposition she overcame, including attack ads funded by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

"Everything was thrown at us -- including the kitchen sink and the stove and the oven. Everything, millions of dollars of negative ads from known and unknown opponents," Boxer said.

Boxer claimed Fiorina represented a return to Republican policies from the past that had created the recession.
She also painted Fiorina as out of step with most California voters on issues ranging from abortion to gun control.

David Tapia, a television casting director from Glendale, focused on Hewlett-Packard's expansion overseas while laying off workers in the U.S., an issue Boxer had hammered Fiorina on during the campaign.

"Sending jobs out of this country is something I feel strongly about, and it really hits the American people," said Tapia, 37. "For some of us struggling to find employment, it's really hard."

What they neglect to mention is that bother are in favor of outsourcing jobs, both didn't exactly come out of their last jobs with glowing reviews or a great work record. Whitman's connection to the Goldman Sach debacle, where she traded eBay shareholder assets for personal gain is an albatross around her neck for those who cared to educate themselves, as is Fiorino's history with HP, where she cost shareholders billions of dollars, laid of thousands of workers, outsourced even more, and walked off with a $21 million golden paracnute.

In other words, we dodged the bullet, and given California is often on the cutting edge of things, hopefully the country will learn from us before next time.

California kissed its ass goodbye when rejecting competent, forward thinking candidates and instead going with the lovers of tax / spend, expand government and bow down to the powerful, blood sucking unions.

Hurry up kids. Go see California while you can. It won't be around for very much longer.

California will far outlive Georgia. After all, Cali actually PAYS for you lazy-ass Georgians, you know. ;)

And to make the taste of victory even sweeter for Niki, outside sources like the U.S. Chamber of Commerce pumped in over $150 million into the Whitman and Fiorina campaigns, among other statewide races. So that's a nice little boost to the California economy, courtesy of the GOP.

With Brown and the tax hikes on the way, enjoy the exodus of " citizens " and businesses fleeing the great state of Kalifornia.

But hey, all those illegals will certainly be willing come right in and start working for.....oh, wait. Who's going to hire them ? The state ? The city of San Francisco ?

Yeah, let's see how that works out.

Oh, I thought that was your tea-bagging victory parade. Smells like you stepped in something. Better check your shoes.

So you're saying the tea-baggers' "victory" smells like failure? I agree. After all, more than two-thirds of the tea-bagger candidates DID fail! (And that includes just about everybody Quitter Palin endorsed)

It was a lose lose for California, but Meg Whitman's career as an obsessive pez collector didn't qualify her to run an economy the size of great britain.

In Wisconsin the Johnson/Finecombed race was the most heavily spent contest in the nation at one point. Although Feincombed far outspent Johnson, and the "outside" liberal groups far outspent the reasonable groups, the better man was victorious. So thanks for all that cash infusion, losers.

Yeah, I knew about the spending. Whitman put $140 million of her own money in too, if I didn't mention that. Couldn't have wasted any better ultrarich person's money, hee, hee, hee. And we did end up being the most expensive race in the country. Not something to crow about...except that Jerry spent VERY little in comparison, so that's kind of a giggle.

At least the Chamber and monied interests didn't buy THIS one, for which I'm most grateful.

Enjoy all your dire predictions; you're completely ignorant of he facts, and dead wrong, to boot. Silicon Valley is already recovering, and we'll be back on our feet. California is tough to legislate and keep financially stable; we've got so much cutting-edge green technology and are so far ahead of the rest of the country, we're bucking trends. Don't worry, the rest of you guys will catch up in time.

I got a shock when I smogged my car and Choey told me in some states they don't even require it, and people take their catalytic converters off! Pathetic; we can't re-register our cars unless they pass smog tests. Which is okay by me; we've reduced the smog TONS, and a new ballot measure requires we reduce emissions even more. Huzzah!

California has the economy of a COUNTRY, but somehow we've survived to this point, and will continue to do so. Just enjoy your fantasies while they last. Boxer's been good for us, Jerry has too; our educational system at the very least will improve without the Govenator raping it regularly every year!

One nice measure that passed will help; from now on, if they don't pass a budget on time, they FORFEIT their pay until they do! Previously they've not gotten paid until the budget passes (along with all the others, who really NEED that money), then gotten it back in a lump sum afterwards. We'll see if they want that money enough to pass one on time next year, as delayed budgets have been a BIG problem forever here.

That's several for our side. I'm tickled.

JONGSSTRAW

California is a hopeless bankrupt disaster. State debt now sitting at around $138 billion and keeps getting worse. It's an "entitlement" state, meaning voters will continue to vote for low-life, corrupt, clueless politicians who rubber stamp entitlements all day long for them. One day, after all the "givers" have all left the state leaving only "takers" there, the whole place will be boarded up and abandoned as a failed Liberal utopia.

Or...we could give California to China...now. Pay off all our Chinese debt with the once-great remnants of California. It would no longer be part of America, and would become a province of Communist China. Most in California would relish that scenario I'm sure.

Be a lot better to give Florida and the "old south" away - after all, they basically contribute nothing to the country, the economy, or the culture - unless you count serial killers and child molesters as "culture"...

Besides, California is one of the very few states that pays more to the federal government than they get back. Take away their contribution, and most of the red states would collapse.

... but now that you mention it, maybe it WOULD be a good idea to let Cali go! I'd do it just to see the looks on the faces of all the backwoods tea-bagging dipshits like Jongsie and Rapster, once they realized they'd just given away their meal ticket.

ETA: LOVE the irony of Jongsie, such a self-proclaimed "patriot", wanting to give a huge chunk of his country to the Chinese, with neither a bang nor a whimper. Just think, Jongsie - if this country had more people like you, we'd have... well, we'd have less people like you!
