Correlation doesn't prove causality. 90% of people vote the way their parents voted. If a certain subgroup of the population votes one way, then their kids will. Blacks tend to be democrats. One black man recently explained it to me this way: "I agree more with what libertarians say, but I always know people who are dependent upon assistance, and I know the democrats will keep that assistance coming." So, there's a logical rationale, and one that his kids are likely to pick up. You could then use this to prove that high melanin content causes you to vote democratic.

There are serious flaws here: I was a liberal growing up. Most people were. The reason most young people have been liberals in most generations isn't that there's been a tide in that direction, but that people become more conservative with age, a fact which contradicts the study.

It could be that this is a really small percentage of the overall group and that among that small percentage there is a slight preference toward liberal inclinations.

So aside from the possibility that there may be a genetic factor present in some people, this study doesn't really tell us much about the extend of that influence in the general population.

Assinine. So you could "only" be more likely to be liberal if you were ALSO socially active. Well, I wasn't socially active during adolescence, so whether or not I have this absurd "gene", why am I liberal?

I would bet many people, however they start out, become more liberal as they mature and engage in education, and more conservative as they enter middle/later years. Education makes for more liberal thinking, as does exposure to different viewpoints, cultures, etc., which most often happens in the educational setting. Conservativism comes with more to protect, acquire, gain or more to fear losing ("I got mine, I'm not worrying about you"). That's a guess; if anyone has valid facts, would be interesting to hear.

But all in all, my first impulse is to wonder, especially as it comes from San Diego, if it's a joke. I KNOW the poster is.

That there are diseases caused by genetics does not mean having a gene is a disease, you fucking delusional tool. Also, the number of diseases actually 100% caused by a gene is minimal: Huntington's, Down Syndrom, Sickle Cell Anemia. Not shockingly at all, you mentioned none of those. While there may be genetic factors to cancer and Alzheimer's, no genes have been pinned down as causal factors. The only evidence of genetic causality being that a slightly higher risk exists in families with history. You want to keep arguing with some who's lived with a biologist for two years, you go right ahead.
