Whoa, what a terrible picture of her, like on purpose... as far as what she wants to do, it's well meaning but like a lot of things she tries to do, completely charmless. How about trying to add a nutrition program to schools instead of trying to tell private businesses how they need to change? Or how diners need to be more like her? Especially now when some are having a hard time just staying in business. She seems completely out of touch sometimes.

Not that I think it's the most important thing we could be doing, but I would be all for the plans for better nutrition (especially in schools, some of those poor kids barely eat much outside their free lunches) if they could focus on improving health rather than declaring a 'war on fatness.' People are built differently, some folks are good to carry some extra lbs and some aren't. Making it about the fatness is negative and stigmatizing. Any teacher worth their salt knows it's more effective and efficient to point out what we want (i e healthiness) than pointing out thing(s) we don't want and saying 'don't do it.'

Of course, if the First Lady suggests we change school menus, the righties will howl that "She wants to raise taxes! She wants to give out more free lunches!"

As for negative messages being ineffectual, I agree. Nancy Reagan did far more harm than good with her idiotic "Just Say No" BS. And besides, it's just rude. It should be "Just say 'No, thank you.'"

There's a *limit* to the amount of control necessary to run a school, and that line just got crossed - woe betide the fools, for there will be much wailing and gnashing of teeth, and twinkies, cause goddamn it they were a staple of my diet in my school years and I turned out just fine!

In about an hour fifteen imma have a talk with the Socrates Club and we is gonna have ourselves a pocket revolt!

AND both they and the school are going to learn some lessons about commerce, prohibition, smuggling and profit - how much you think my boys can MAKE on pastry now that it's banned, hmmm ?

Same old, same old - taking the same abject, utter abysmal failure behind prohibition and the war on (some) drugs, and applying it to childrens dietary choices, thinking they can maybe get away with it this time cause children have no rights, well...

Here's a little news flash for em, ain't no one got no rights - until they're willing to ENFORCE them, to stand and deliver, and I'll bet dollars to donuts... well, shit, I AM betting dollars to donuts, ain't I ?
That these kids will play right along with my nefarious plan to the very hilt, you just watch.

Healthy eating is fine, dietary information is great, especially when the list of ingrediants is accurate and not obfuscated - but only so long as it REMAINS A CHOICE, the minute you start removing that, corruption will set in sure as day follows dawn and in less than a year Monsanto will be writing the menus... fuck that.

Obesity is one of a number of huge health problems resulting from the crappy diet that most people eat. We're just sneaking up on your enormous flabby backside in terms of statistics for being overweight as a nation. We're nutritionally impoverished in so many areas it isn't funny, our food is killing us, literally. High fat,sugar and salt content in our regular diets; incredibly low in fibre, overprocessed, full of chemical substances. Westerners eat vastly more than other societies, and yet we're nutritionally doing very poorly.

If Mrs O wants to make this her thing, then go for it.

Yes, it was supposed to be tongue in cheek funny, saying "turned out just fine" while going into a fatigue, caffiene and sugar laced Edgar-Friendly rant-a-logue.
