DREAMTROVE

This image highlights the problem with this sort of jump:

Look at the bottom and measure the horizontal distance. Now figure that this person is intending to jump that distance.

What enables him to do it in the sideways momentum, which he manages quite well, but this is probably a good way to get killed:

If we skip the optical illusion, we realize that he clears the shoreline around the third to last frame, and probably clears the rocks underneath after that.

If you were looking at the top, staring down, this distance wouldn't have been as clear. Figure the first four images are his maximum side jump. Now figure the guy put a lot of study into this first, or got very lucky. Pity the person who just jumped down, instead. They fell 8 feet to the ledge below. Someone who jumped out a bit fell the next 20 feet to the ledge below, and might have survived, if someone was there with a chopper. Now imagine the person who jumped *almost* enough out, and was turned into raspberry jam on the slope below.

ETA: I'm somewhat surprised that 20' and 30' are considered dangerous jumps. I used to do it all the time into about 2-3 feet of water. Thinking about it, I don't advise anyone else doing it. For some reason, my shallow dives have degenerated with age, I go much much deeper now when I hit, I think I must be less flexible. I also discovered recently that I now sink. I'm not sure what that's about. I tested it by holding my breath and trying to remain completely stationary with one hand up while someone else watching me. Sure enough I sink.
