This is the kind of drivel you get when a politician doesn't fit the mould. A lot of us applaud the fact that she isn't doing the spin for appearances, but you can see how threatened people are by a powerful woman, who is unmarried and childless, left winged, and honest about her religious beliefs, she is an unashamed atheist.

Incidentally, she'll be taking us back to the polls in a few months and people can vote her out if they don't like what they see. We do live in a democracy.

It says she is an atheist and has no religious beliefs. And then goes on to that she's a satanist.

How odd and curious!

Wouldn't belief in Satan kind of indicate a belief in a god of some sort? If you're an atheist, you don't have demons OR gods. That's like someone telling you they don't believe in Santa Claus, and you proclaiming that that means they're followers of the Easter Bunny!

Thanks Niki. Just hope we are evolved enough to re-elect her.

I've always liked Julia, she is what she is, with little pretence or spin about her. She speaks with a broad accent, which she has been criticised for, but I think cudos to her for not reshaping herself. I'm not so happy with the recent leadership spill that happened, although her predecessor Rudd was failing to impress and likely to ride the ALP to defeat at the next election.

Truth be told, in reality there is little to distinguish between the two major parties here. The Libs (Liberal) are supposedly the more right of the two, more business orientated, whereas the ALP traditionally has had a strong union base. Really both parties are somewhere in the centre. Their policies support a mixed economy, funding will be provided for a whole host of services including health, education, welfare and business subsidies left right and centre. At election time, they'll both try and buy off the electorate with promises of where they'll distribute funding.

Politics here is very personality driven. A huge chunk of people will tend to vote for the person they relate to best and another chunk will calculate which government they will be better off financially under. Kind of pathetic really.

Neat. Wish we had someone like her over here--of course, they wouldn't have a dog's chance in hell, with our pathetic puritanical streak and prejudices and mysogyny and all. Ah, well.

Would be AWFULLY nice to have a centrist government, or even two somewhat centrist parties...this whole thing has gotten wearing after so many years of hatred and extremes. Isn't good for the country. But most people here vote viscerally, it's personality driven too...but it's more a matter for many of us of voting for the person we HATE LESS. And of course people vote for whatever party they THINK will benefit them financally...unfortunately it often doesn't work out that way.

I'd like to get enthusiastic about a candidate...at least one that had any hope of winning...sigh...rather than constantly "the lesser of two evils".

What are her political stances? How is she on the environment? Business?
