On the radio today, David Ike said something really profound, about cops being nobodies without their uniforms. He really nailed it. If I were a cop, I'd be skeert.

America loves a winner!

Being a cop is a no win scenario.

All it takes is for 1 or 2 thugs on an entire force, and instantly everyone in a uniform is viewed by the actions of their very worst.

And the low lifes don't always walk the beat, but are just as likely to be highly decorated and pull in big Gov't pay checks, working in nice offices and enjoying a boat load of perks.

Pull over a random driver for a broken tail light, and you're likely to get a mouth full of lead for your troubles.

Ain't no pay check big enough to spend when you're dead.

KANEMAN

The problem with being a cop is they HAVE to enforce some pretty lame laws. I'm sure many would rather chase murderers......just one girl's opinion.

But isn't that true of any group? SEIU, for instance? ACORN?
Islam? Abu Ghraib? Cheney's hunting party? One or two evil bastards spoil things for everybody!

If we don't want groups judged by the actions of a few individuals, then can I keep my shoes on at the airport? Can I *NOT* be strip-searched to get on a 2-hour flight?

It's funny when cops don't think they should be "profiled", since they spend so much of their time doing exactly that to other people.

DREAMTROVE

Of course it's true. Cops are common criminals, deputized by the govt. It's fascism fashion, just dress him up and he's boss. I know a kid who was a cop in a school play, and they ran out of juice, so he had to run get something at the story. This woman came up to him and asked him to ticket a car, and so he turned to her to tell her he wasn't a cop, and she was the woman who used to yell at him for crossing her lawn on the way to school. She just said "sorry officer." So he left it at that.

But yes, obviously it's nonsense. But the ranks in blue are determined by budgets. Kill the budget.

Gettin' old, but still a hippie at heart...

I don't buy that all cops are jackboots for a minute. That reflects your experience.

The fact is, however, that like the military, people who LIKE being authority figures are drawn to those professions, and others like them. It's been MY experience that people put in authority in other ways, like horse riders who were 'deputized' to tell us off when our dogs were off leash on trails, were the most offensive people I've run into.

"Controllers" can be found in any profession, including offices, heaven knows. So I would bet a higher proportion of those who like being in authority are in police forces, the military and places like that than elsewhere. That doesn't mean they're all thugs, IMO.

SEIU is organized TO BE thuggish. It's not a " couple of mal contents " or bad apples. By design, these folks are radicalized.

Same w/ ACORN.

You're missing the point. The cops are average guys, like the soldiers. It's the structure of command and the nature of the job that turns them into tools of the oppressor. In particular, it's best for TPTB if they have no real skill sets or knowledge about their field, and menial incomes, no real executive authority within the power structure.

Think about it. Cops don't write laws, they don't challenge them, they can't change them. Is this a logical way to set up a society? What if a cop deeply believes a law is morally wrong, or what if in the process of enforcing it he discovers that it is seriously wrongheaded? Well then, he's easily replaceable by someone twice as dumb who will shut up and obey orders.

Ever wondered why the army has enlisted men at all? Why not have an army entirely made up of special forces? Why not do the same with the police? God knows that there are enough lawyers around that you could have an elite force of well informed smart cops to get the job done. Maybe getting the job done isn't really what they had in mind when they set it up.

That is the official hiring policy in this former whaling village, where Police Department officials refused to grant Robert J. Jordan a job interview because they considered him to be too smart, then waged a three-year court fight to protect their right to favor mediocre applicants.

And won.

Not that they don't have a smidgen of a point, as I mentioned the Marine I hired for a very, very boring job isn't exactly the sharpest pencil in the box - but I've ALWAYS got a use for clever people, hell yes.

Sheriff Richard Mack won a case in the US Supreme Court proving that cops NEVER are required to enforce an "unconstitutional law" (oxymoron). In Mack's case he proved sheriffs are not required to enforce gun ban laws.

Mack was of course defeated by the political machine in the next election. No good deed goes unpunished.
