Hello,

This is a use of tax dollars I can laud. I'd love to see more of this throughout the country, and fewer bailouts and wars.

1.5 billion for a massive solar power plant. Imagine if just $500 Billion of the stimulus package had gone to plans like this one. 333 powerplants like this could have been constructed, creating 532,800 construction jobs that would last 2 years. A Hoover Dam style project of the 21st century. Moreover, those half-million additional employed would be spending their paychecks, creating (please feel free to laugh at the term) trickle-down employment in other sectors. Also, the greater supply of energy would push down energy prices everywhere, giving everyone a bit more in their wallets.

And of course, it need not only be solar. It could also be windmills or wave generators, spreading the power and wealth around the country.

That's just 500 billion. How much have we spent on the stimulus in all these past two years? How much have we spent on the wars? I'd rather pay people to build renewable energy plants than pay banks to recover from making bad loans.

Hindsight is 20/20, but I wish we could go back and do it all again. I think we could have done it better.

America loves a winner!

Not a proper function of Gov't, and certainly not a proper function of any stimulus bill. You want to have it as part of the general budget, for the very same reasons ? Fine. Submit it as such, and vote on it for its own merits.

But a massive public works program isn't by any stretch a good idea.

I agree. But Anthony, this CAN'T be a good thing, otherwise Obama would be "to blame". And of course "not a single thing" has changed from the past administration...we all remember how much money was put into renewable energy by Dumbya, right?

Well, I been lookin at the execution of some of these projects and some folk locally need a talkin-to about it...

We just paid like 30K for solar panels for the city hall which only save like a $1.44USD a day, they coulda got the panels for maybe 40% of that, I coulda got em installed for free, and if they had used a different model they would have gotten 2-3x as much efficiency, and not discouraged local residents from the idea of renewable power, ugh.

Was talkin to a small scale smelter operation recently who manages to service all their electrical needs off the waste heat from the smelting, using a geothermal-type unit they bought on deep discount from the netherlands, I thought that was a shiny idea.

Mostly we need to think through HOW we go about this, instead of just throwin money at it, honestly.

DREAMTROVE

It'll ramp up supply, so when the project ends, solar prices should drop. There's a plus.

I doubt the thing is feasible, but it's curious that one would hand so much money to a cashpoor state trying to de facto secede from the union.

You've got it exactly right, the Government subsidies will allow them to make over priced solar panels that no one can afford to buy without additional Government subsidies that will go to the buyers. Better solar technology will be stifled because the Government has already picked the winner and will continued to subsidise inferior technology. You are also right about us being the ones left holding the bag.

Government subsidizes tons of stuff, and it hasn't led to "inferior" products. Except maybe oil drilling. But they subsidize tobacco farming and many other things, farming, fishing, soybeans; this could be a good thing, we'll have to wait and see.

The demand is there, at least out here. Has created a new problem in California, however:
Quote:

Wine Country is experiencing an unusual crime spree. The target of the thieves isn't an expensive merlot or pinot, but something less fruity: solar panels.

The latest hit happened at an undisclosed winery in Rutherford early Monday morning. The Napa County Sheriff's Office says 25 solar panels worth $30,000 were stolen.

It is the 16th theft of solar panels in Napa County since January 2008. Ten of the businesses were wine-related. That adds up to about $400,000 worth of panels.

The majority of the thefts happen late at night or early in the morning at rural locations, Capt. Tracey Stuart said. She added that she thinks the panels are probably being resold.

Giving birth to a new industry:
Quote:

Solar panels are valuable and unfortunately the more unscrupulous in our society are realizing that too. Around the world there's been a marked increase in the theft of solar panels, with people losing up to tens of thousands of dollars worth of equipment in single incidents.

While a solar array may be covered under your home contents insurance policy (and it's a good idea to check that it is) , it doesn't do anything towards the trauma of being a victim of theft and may also increase your insurance premiums.

In most states it is still illegal to have explosive booby traps, death rays, acid bombs, steel jawed traps and high voltage electrification deterrents as a means of protecting your investment from criminals, but with a little bit of ingenuity and common sense you can certainly frustrate their efforts without causing grievous bodily harm to offenders, as desirable as that might be. The great thing is many strategies are quite cheap to implement; especially given the value of your investment.

Here's some handy tips for solar panel security.

Ahh, human ingenuity. Invent something new, man will find a way to pervert it or steal it. Funny little species, we are.
