I found it amusing that this was the breed of dogs they chose to picture in this article:

Tashi is currently "blowing coat", so I'm saving it. One of the people I know, a Sibe breeder, e-mailed me about this. I see it's now making the MSM:

If you've been keeping tabs on the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, you've probably been wondering how exactly you can help.

Well, for those of you with furry, four-legged flatmates, it can be as easy as sweeping the floors and collecting all that errant fur and hair.

So how exactly can hoarding pet fur help with cleaning up one of the worst environmental disasters in recent memory? Enter Matter of Trust, a San Francisco-based nonprofit that's been accepting donations of non-filthy pet fur and human hair since 1998 to craft oil-absorbing hairmats -- described as "flat square dreadlocks" -- and hair-stuffed containment booms made from recycled pantyhose.

These hairy contraptions are effective at soaking-up oil and they don't require any new resources ... just stuff you'd normally trash (or compost) unless you're into, umm, stockpiling fur.

I must say, sending along fur to Matter of Trust via Excess Access is an eco-ideal spring cleaning mission for folks with critters around the house.

In addition to pet owners, groomers and salon owners can get involved too by sending in bulk shipments of hair/fur. In fact, as of Tuesday, 400,000 pounds of hair was en route to the Gulf Coast.

So you mean Ghoster-kitties impressively excessive shedding might be useful ?
There's a thought.

Seriously, one of her nicknames is explode-a-kitty, cause she practially explodes the stuff everywhere, and when she gets nervous, it's three times worse!
when the vet picked her up off the exam table to put her on the scale, there was this CLOUD of fur in her wake, at which point the vet goes - "Is that *normal* for this cat ?", and I just laughed... our vet knows how downright weird our kitties are, to the point where that's her reaction to any of the bizarre behaviors they exhibit.

I can prolly get em a couple POUNDS of fur just offa the ex's couch, and what the hell, it might help just a little.

We brushed out so much shedded fur off of the late great Maximov ( beloved Husky that he was ) that we should have opened up a line of our own winter clothing.

Ah then Raptor, you know about huskies and "blowing coat"! My friend who always had huskies, and where I fell in love with them, used to wash the shedded fur and WEAVE it...some really nice sweaters and scarves!

Yes, Frem sounds to me like Ghoster could clean up the whole SPILL if you let her! Maybe jump out at her a few times and send it in, I'm sure the fishermen would send you a thank-you note!

My rabbits blow coat pretty impressively too for their size, but they're dwarf rabbits, so it's only relative! I'm certainly going to send Tashi's when he's through, and Kochak should start any time now blowing out her puppy coat.

Couldn't hurt, eh?

Hell, I told the ex we could just shake her over a trash bag, it's not like she ever runs outta fur that we've ever noticed.

She did promise to fill a couple bags while she tries to clean, but given her domestic skills I won't hold my breath - although I am tempted to encourage one of the enviro-geeks down at the college to do it by tellin her she can have as much as she wants if she's willing to bag it up and cart it out...

In the grand scheme of things, no doubt it's not all that much, but every little bit helps, and that place is LOADED with fur, six cats for most of ten years, and four to this day, one of whom is Ghoster ?

Yeah, they should be able to do something with it, and I'd be damn glad to see it put to good use!

Freedom is Important because People are Important

Hello,

I would think that the Humane Societies of the nation could provide tons of the stuff. Never mind the barber shops. However, I'm not sure that donating anything to help the cleanup is a good idea.

If this is a viable cleanup product, then the oil companies should be paying for it. A dollar per pound sound reasonable?
