MORRISTOWN - A botched break-in this morning turned into a gunfight that left one would-be robber dead and two more on the run, authorities said.

Deputies arrived at Rustic Circle just after 1:30 a.m. to investigate a shooting call, Hamblen County Sheriff Esco Jarnagin said. They found a woman's body lying in the road at the end of the cul-de-sac.

She'd been shot through the throat, the sheriff said.

The woman had knocked at the door of Scott and Penny Knight, claiming she had car trouble and asking to use the phone. Scott Knight became suspicious and fetched a .22-caliber pistol, the sheriff said.

When he opened the door, at least two armed men tried to force their way inside.

"They started shooting, and he started shooting," the sheriff said. "She was struck, and they fled. We don't know for sure if one of them was shot."

About a dozen bullets flew during the shoot-out, but no one inside the house was hurt, Jarnagin said. The surviving would-be robbers drove away in a white, compact car that appeared to be missing a hubcap.

Investigators have identified the woman but haven't tracked down family members yet, the sheriff said. Her name wasn't immediately available.

The sheriff asked that anyone with information in the case call 423-585-2770 or 585-2701.

Morristown news stated the would be home invaders consisted of a white female and two black males. Goes on to state the men were armed with rifles and several large caliber bullet casings were recovered that matched the bullet holes in the house. Amazing he stood them off with a .22 pistol but at least his family is safe.

A steady hand, and good shot placement, trumps large caliber.

A terrifying reality: Father featured on TV show kills one of three who tried to invade his home

The .22-caliber bullet hit Repasky in the upper-left chest area, and she died as a result of blood loss within two minutes. Hamblen County Sheriff Esco Jarnagin says he considers the fatal shooting in the Timbercrest subdivision to be a clear-cut case of justifiable homicide. Some time after the 1:30 a.m. exchange of gunfire in Hamblen County, a black male walked into the Knoxville St. Mary’s Hospital emergency room for treatment of a small-caliber gunshot wound to his abdomen. Knight described the men who allegedly attempted to force their way into his home as black males. The injured man, who reportedly was gravely wounded, underwent surgery Saturday afternoon, according to the sheriff.

The Knights were featured on "The World’s Strictest Parents," a Country Music Television reality show on which hard-to-handle teens lived in their home.

Mr. Knight’s wife, Penny, is a probation officer for the Hamblen County Juvenile Court system, and the Knights have taken in troubled teens as foster children for several years.

Even a 22 is useful if it's at point blank range and through the throat.

.22 is VERY useful. It makes a great hitman's weapon, because it's quiet enough to be mistaken for a backfire or a firecracker, and it's generally small and easy to conceal.

Big bang, big caliber weapons are generally for people with, ummm... shortcomings in other areas...

I got a wild boar with a 22 Mag.

Mob hitmen prefer it. Ask RFK.

Pentagon uses it for M16.

What a load of crap. Poor innocent woman, getting gunned down like that, she didn't do 'nuthin but try to get some help. Good thing her friends had rifles to scare that crazy homeowner into taking cover inside the house. No telling how many he would of killed if he had gotten out of the house.

Yes, I'm kidding.

Ha!

And people laugh at my puny little Bersa and it's subsonic loaded PowRBalls.

At the range a personal defense pistol is intended for, very VERY effective, and subsonic .380Auto is quieter than a .22LR - just so you know.
