A T-shirt vendor saw something suspicious in New York's Times Square Saturday evening -- smoke coming from an unoccupied SUV on 45th Street near 7th Avenue -- so he alerted police.

The tip led to what New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg called an "amateurish"-looking car bomb and what Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano told ABC News' "This Week" today might have been part of a "one-off" attack.

The 6:30 p.m. scare prompted police to evacuate thousands of people from the heart of the Big Apple during one of its busiest times -- a warm Saturday night when it was packed with theatergoers and tourists.

"We are very lucky," Bloomberg said. "Thanks to alert New Yorkers and professional police officers, we avoided what could [have been] a very deadly event."

Authorities were examining security cameras and other evidence to see if they could identify a possible suspect or motive -- and already had located video of the car being driven to the scene.

"Tape is being reviewed and additional forensics are being done in addition to that," Napolitano said. "Times Square, I think, now is safe."

Inside the SUV, investigators found three propane cylinders, two five-gallon jerry cans of gasoline, a canister of powder, electrical components and a timing device, police officials said. There was no high-grade explosive, and the timing device was clocks attached to wires, police said.

"This is a bomb. This is a car bomb -- a crude device that includes gasoline, propane and is wired together," NYPD spokesman Paul Browne said Saturday.

"The wiring ... looked amateurish, I think, is a nice way to phrase it," Bloomberg added later. "It was made up of consumer-grade fireworks that you can buy in Pennsylvania and drive into New York.

"It certainly could have exploded and had a pretty big fire, and a decent amount of explosive impact," Bloomberg said.

He suggested the incident shows how an alert populace can help foil an attack.

"It's a reminder to all of us, whether we're in airports or train stations, subways, if we do see something that looks a little suspicious, it's much better to call it in than to have the guilt afterwards that you didn't," Clarke said.

This is so halfass it's laughable - FYI, when the report was called in, and during initial police response there were TWO propane cylinders in that vehicle, and now all the sudden there's three ?

And the supposed case of fertilizer or whatever ?
NOT in the vehicle during that time.

Seems like someones makin an opportunity out of this one - as it was rigged, that "bomb" wasn't any major threat, the fireworks might, MAYBE, have ignited the gasoline, and you'd have had a car fire, that's about it - if the propane tanks went at all it'd be much later when they heated enough to blow off the release valves, but still, classing this as a bomb is a bit of a stretch.

Surveillence society works both ways, since the contents of some of those cameras has already been wilded beyond the reach of the powers that be, any attempt at concocting a convenient pat bullshit story is out the window - since the suspect seen fleeing is a honky, making it unpossible to blame "arab muslims" for this one, although no doubt they'll try.

Also, you cannot eradicate a VIN number from a vehicle that easily, it's in multiple places and even if they did wipe em all, I doubt they thought to wipe the EDR recorder, which would also contain it, and can be accessed by remote without even a passcode - just so ya know.

So despite whatever faery tale they wanna spin to keep up the booga-booga, it's pretty likely this guy is gonna get caught, and we'll know the REAL whys and wherefores of it soon enough.

In the meantime, watching the authorities and their compliant media try to pump up the fear factor to keep us from thinking about it too much is kind of amusing in a sad, sick little way.

Me, I want who actually DID it, instead of whatever person or faction they're hoping for an excuse to go after - *REMEMBER* what reacting with a knee-jerk bought us in Afghanistan and Iraq, and how fear and rage can blind people.

I consider our own so-called protectors to be more dangerous, and so I plan to be watching THEM as closely as any suspect.

... Not to mention that the earliest reports credited a simple hotdog vendor for first noticing said "device" and then reporting it.

Now?

Nowwhere to be seen, and the cops are getting all the credit.

Gotta keep up the facade that the police are everywhere, "protecting" the citizens of NY.

Wouldn't want people to start thinking that they can defend and protect themselves.

Or that there are good people out there.

Nope, gotta keep up with the "Cops are the only good guys, the government is here to help" bullshit.

Now now Wulf, they DO have their uses.

In fact it was the local PD who thought to look for the other VIN plates, chased down the paper trail to the original owner (not a suspect), the source of the license plate, and an auto shop which did the last oil change (thanks to the windshield sticker), and they've been right professional about it - to my surprise, since THEY at least are handling it as a straight criminal thing instead of playing along with the booga booga.

They're not completely useless *WHEN THEY DO THEIR JOB* instead of ignoring it in favor of hassling or extorting their protectees - I just wish to hell they'd actually do the damn job we pay them for more often, effectively, and professionally, than they do.

But in this case, they've been on the ball, no complaints - they *will* likely catch this one, and it'll be interesting to find out, cause I suspect he's either Libertarian or Anarchist...

Rightwingers or militia nuts woulda built a better bomb, actual terrorists would have picked a better target, and if there's one thing the left end of politics has ever been utterly incompetent at, it's blowing shit up.

There's a couple elements involved in the investigation (feds mostly) trying to pump up the case and the booga booga factor, but being that the "public" got their hands on the tapes FIRST, there's no chance of em blamin the Qeadas or the Talitubbies for this one, despite having to CYA when the phonied-up credit claim was sent out before they knew the tapes had been wilded.

Remember above all Wulf - surveillence society works BOTH ways, and any camera ever hooked to the net, is damn near as good as being there.

I was going to say something but Frem said it. Still, we should give Obama credit, because, after all, the last administration took credit enough times.. gotta balance the equation.

They did arrest a guy for it, but it kinda fails the sniff test so far, him having such a terribly "convenient" heritage and not whatever matching any description or profile of the suspect.

Oh, and the site takin credit for it ?
It's a fake, run by a guy named Cohen, which most of these so-called "jihadi" websites are, and it's not even a GOOD fake.

So, once again, politics and the need to keep the fear button pressed, justify the abuses of the powers that be, takes precedence over any reality.

Can you just imagine how this woulda been spun if the tape had NOT gotten out ?
*shakes head*
