Former President George W. Bush’s memoir, “Decision Points,” will be released by Crown Publishers, a division of Random House, on Nov. 9, the publisher said on Monday. Mr. Bush will write about political and personal challenges and discuss his handling of events, including the Sept. 11 attacks and Hurricane Katrina, as well as embracing his faith amid an effort to quit drinking.

In a news release, Crown said that Mr. Bush would focus on 14 critical decisions in his life and share his reflections on subjects including the closely fought 2000 presidential election and the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Crown said that Mr. Bush had given few speeches or interviews since leaving office.

“Instead, he has spent almost every day writing ‘Decision Points,’” the release said, adding, “He writes honestly and directly about his flaws and mistakes, as well as his historic achievements.” The book will be released in hardcover and in audio and e-book formats. Mr. Bush will also go on a national book tour.

George W. Bush, who once famously called himself "The Decider," has written a book about decisions.

"I want people to understand the environment in which I was making decisions," the former U.S. president said during a brief telephone interview Wednesday with The Associated Press from his office in Dallas.

"I want people to get a sense of how decisions were made, and I want people to understand the options that were placed before me."

Instead of telling his life story, Bush will concentrate on about a dozen personal and presidential choices, from giving up drinking to picking Dick Cheney as his vice president to sending troops to Iraq.

The structure of Bush's current book is not unlike his A Charge to Keep, published by William Morrow in 1999 as the then-Texas governor was preparing to run for president. In the foreword to Charge, Bush noted that he had no interest in a comprehensive, chronological memoir.

"That would be far too boring," he wrote. "The book chronicles some of the events that have shaped my life and some of my major decisions and actions as governor of Texas."

Although he didn't keep a diary while in the White House — he "jotted" down the occasional note — he said he began Decision Points just two days after leaving the White House.

Once known for his reluctance to acknowledge mistakes, Bush said the book would include self-criticism, "Absolutely, yes," but cautioned that "hindsight is very easy" and that he would make sure readers could view events as he saw them.

"I want to recreate what it was like, for example, right after 9/11," he said, "and have people understand the emotions I felt and what others around me felt at the time."

Oh, gawd, I can't even TOUCH this one...it's far too rich with material. I'll let others do so if they wish...

i wonder if it is a picture, or pop-up book. perhaps there is a little goat in it?

in all fairness, i would wager that the majority of books by politicians were written by ghosts, and bush is kind of a tragically compelling figure (in the mold of nixon), rotten politics aside.

The book probably is ghost written, but remember, the bumbling folksiness is an act. He got Cs in college, but that was because he was a partier (and possibly an alcoholic and an addict). Supposedly his writings back then are pretty comparable to John Kerry's student writings.

Though maybe John Kerry was doing George's homework; they did attend Skull and Bones together...

Damn, Mincing - you beat me to the pop-up line!

And yes, it was almost certainly written by ghosts. Fate knows Bush *created* enough ghosts during his time in office... 3000 here, 4000 there, 150,000 over yonder, a million in this country, a few hundie in that one, pretty soon it starts adding up!

I wonder if this book will be on display in his Presidential "Libary". If so, it's likely to be the ONLY book there. Well, other than "My Pet Goat", anyway...

Good for "W", Barry's already written two. I heard that Barry's 3rd book will be titled:

"How a filthy lying juggeared racebaiting douchebag with only 144 days in the Senate got elelected President"

or Clintons next book;

"How I raped a woman and still became President"

or Carters next book;

"I was the worsed President ever, or how I nailed my thumb to a 2x4.

wer-ist-das, you disappoint me. every time i think that you're on the verge of greatness, you shrink from the edge. if you're going to be mean, at least be good and mean. try again...you can do better.

for example, a better title for clinton's book would have been "strange: a memoir" or simply "bubba."

Frem, power is an aphrodisiac. Ask Henry Kissinger--he'll tell you.

LBJ is the second greatest president after Andrew Jackson. It is widely accepted that if LBJ wasn't president, he would have been in a mad house. Sex aside, legend has it that the man routinely dropped trow to relieve himself in the oval office, in the company of other politicians and reporters and so forth. Like, he'd piss in his waste basket in front of people while talking like nothing was out of the ordinary.

Wouldn't a better title for Dubya's book be "Pretzel Logic"?

Oooo, this is fun. I KNEW if I just put up the article, you guys would run with it.

I'm sure Dumbya made MANY good decisions, given his mentality:

Cheney walks into the Oval Office and tells Bush “Mr. President, three Brazilians died in Iraq today.”

Bush jumps to his feet and cries in anguish “Oh my god! How many are in a Brazillion?!”

Yes, there are qualities I admire about Dubya. For one thing, I admire his ability to tell his left hand from his right - often in as little as two tries!
