I think you're right. It's getting very little chatter over here in the U.S. Oh, they're talking about it, some, and showing it on the news, but it doesn't seem many "get" the implications of this tragedy.

Do you see implications?

The new Russia under Putin and Medvedev are feeling their nationalistic oats. OTOH, Poland hews VERY closely to the USA line... their ties to the USA are far closer than any other nations' in the region. (I feel sorry for the Poles. But they're religious like the USA, and stupid like the USA.)

And Poland has very little that Russia wants. It's STILL a backwards economy. Farmers still plow with horses. Vast areas are contaminated by mine tailings and industrial pollution. There is no oil and not much coal. The only relevance that Poland has to Russia is strategic: A change in government might mean that the USA could not base its missiles in Poland.

So what? It's NEW policy by the USA to place forward-based missiles in Europe. Reversing that policy would mean we stand pat.

The whole cost/benefit to Russia just doesn't seem to work out. Unless you seem something I don't see, in which case- please inform us!

You expect that Russia will just sit on its hands, and let an opportunity like this simply go by the way side, and do absolutely nothing ?

Rappy- "Freedom" does not mean "free market". At some point, you will rid yourself of that fundamental confusion. It mean civil liberties and the right to vote.

My dad grew up in Poland, fought in WWII, was imprisoned in Siberia. And my grandparents on my mom's side were directly from Poland. Polish was spoken in our household.

So I know what I'm talking about when I say it's not as straightforward as you think. Many Poles - including my dad, who was otherwise a terrific person- were happy the Jews were exterminated. My dad said (regarding the Jews) "Well, Hitler cleaned that up well enough". The only education my grandma got was when the Russians taught her to read and write... in Polish. Poland has a history of political stupidity. They tend to shoot themselves in the foot... a lot. Did you ever hear about the Polish Veto? It tied the Polish Parliament up in such knots they had to ask a Swedish king to govern their country!

AFA Russia is concerned... what WOULD it do? What CAN it do? And is it worth it?

You're falling into the same mistake that you did with Saddam. It's easy to have deep paranoid suspicions and create a lot of scary "what ifs", but at some point you have to inject reality into your scenarios. Russia, like Saddam, is faced with resource limits. They're fighting a brutal war in Chechnya. They're concerned about their pipelines and the flow/ price of oil. Their MAJOR concern with Poland is forward-based USA missiles. That is most likely the arena they want to influence.

So, if you have any other INFORMATION about the situation... not just your usual "what ifs" that tend to float away from the real world... please let us know!

Rappy, sometimes shit happens. As it turns out, all of the stuff you thought Saddam was doing (stockpiling WMD, shipping arms off to Syria, developing nuclear weapons) was nothing more than paranoid fantasy. But I'll mark it in my calendar. In a year, I'll get back with you to discuss if anything has changed except (possibly) forward-based US missiles, and then we can see if it traces back to Russia.

Oh, hell yeah. I buy that. Honest, I do. Planes get hijacked and flown into sky scrapers. There's no need for a big conspiracy. Shit just happens. And sometimes flight crews insist on flying into a dense fog area, instead of flying to safer airports. But even so, big events don't happen in a vacuum. There are always consequences. Whether planned for nor not. Someone will " benefit " from this tragedy, whether or not they had any direct hand in it.

Well, not really, but you conveniently forget that nearly every Democrat was saying the exact same thing, before AND AFTER Bush was even elected.

I hope you've bookmarked this page Sygnym. I'd like to see how Rappy handles it next April.

I too have family from Poland. My grandmother, and an aunt and uncle who left during the violence in the 70s. With this country's history, I can't completely rule out the chance for badness to follow this plane crash.

But I don't think Rappy's Russian invasion is likely. This isn't the Soviet Union and the Iron Curtain we're talking about. The whole environment is different from 20-30 years ago.

And as horrible as this plane crash is, it's not leaving quite the vaccuum at the top as I thought at first. I don't know the political system in Poland, but going by this:

The deaths were not expected to directly affect the functioning of Polish government: Poland's president is commander in chief of its armed forces but the position's domestic duties are chiefly symbolic. No top government ministers were aboard the plane.

It seems like the loss of Poland's president is not the quite the same as the loss of the US's president would be.

Do you know Sygnym?

Siggy, for all their flaws, the Polish have two qualities I have tremendous admiration for - one is their cooking, and the second is their immediate insistence to foist it on you the moment you get your coat off!

As for the cause, I looked over the data - *I* would not have tried landing such a battered tugboat of an aircraft in those conditions, plus he was trying to essentially do an instrument landing on a strip that had not ILS - and we got a word for aircraft that try that stunt - Lawn Darts.

In fact, the ONLY pilot around here capable doing a no instrument landing in heavy fog is the guy who owns that Spad replica, cause even *I* can't do that, not even in the dominator.

This one is pilot error and bad judgement all the way.

Poland Shocked... Suspicion Spreads After President Lech Kaczynski's Death And Decapitation of Polish Govt
http://www.knowthelies.com/?q=node/5592

Quote:

Did Obama, Soros (Schwartz) and the Global Elite Kill Polish President Kaczynski?

Not only did Poland decline to be a victim of the bankster loan sharking operation, Poland’s central bank had the audacity to offer the IMF a loan to “help other countries overcome the effects of the global crisis,” the AFP reported on March 29, 2010.

Poland was the only member of the 27-nation European Union to have experienced growth in 2009 and the IMF forecast that its economy would expand by 2.75 percent this year and by 3.25 percent in 2011.

Poland’s zloty grew by 1.7 percent in 2009, a remarkable feat given that European Union countries contracted by an average of 4.1 percent and no other EU economy grew at all. “Poland avoided eastern Europe’s worst lending binges. Kaczynski frustrated some of his opponents by being in no rush to head towards the euro party,” the Daily Telegraph reports today.

Earlier this month, Czech Central Bank Vice Deputy Mojmir Hampl said the IMF fueled Eastern Europe’s crisis to create a situation that would compel regional states to request the help from the globalist loan sharking operation.

“He said that the institution, which offered emergency funds for Hungary, Lithuania, Ukraine and Romania, misinterpreted some data because they are looking for new clients as the leadership changed,” HotNews reported.

Indeed, the leadership has now changed in Poland and it looks like a pro-euro political leader may replace Kaczynski. “Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s pro-euro Civic Platform party is likely to cement its grip on power in a presidential election that must now be held by June after President Lech Kaczynski died in a plane crash,” reports Bloomberg today.

In addition, Kaczynski placed a euro-skeptic ally in charge of the central bank, Slawomir Skrzypek, who was also killed in the crash.
It looks like Poland may soon join the EU Borg hive with open arms.

AIRCRASH HAS ALL THE HALLMARKS OF A 'PREPLANNED ACCIDENT'

It is most unlikely that the fatal crash shortly before 11:00 a.m. on 10th April of a Polish Government Tupolev Tu-154 aircraft near the Smolensk-Severnyi military airport, was an accident. It looked just like an accident, given that the airplane sliced treetops on its fourth attempt to land in heavy fog, disintegrating about one mile from the airport. There had been 'suggestions' that the plane should divert to Minsk. There were no survivors.

The 60-year-old President of Poland, Lech Kaczynski, was leading a delegation of highest-level Polish officials to attend memorial ceremonies at Katyn, the site of the massacre of 22,000 Poles by Soviet terrorist operatives 70 years ago.

As a consequence of that massacre in 1940 et seq., all possible sources of subsequent resistance to Soviet control in Poland were liquidated in one operation.

The casualty list of those who perished in the Tupolev Tu-154 crash on Saturday implies that Polish sources of problems considered to be intractable by Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin (Shalomov), of Soviet Military Intelligence (GRU), and Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachëv (KGB-FSB-covert Party) from his administrative wing inside the Kremlin complex, have likewise been liquidated in what can be considered to be 'the second Katyn Massacre'.

THE KEY FIGURES IDENTIFIED AMONG THE CASUALTIES

Among the dead were the following:

· Blasik, Andrzej, Chief of the Polish Air Force.
· Bochenek, Krystyna, Deputy Speaker of the Polish Senate.
· Chodakowski, Archbishop Miron, Orthodox Ordinary of the Polish Army.
· Deptula, Leszek, Member of the Sejm (Lower House of Parliament).
· Dolniak, Grzegorz, Member of the Sejm.
· Fetlinska, Janina, Member of the Polish Senate.
· Gagor, General Franciszek, Chief of the Polish Army General Staff.
· Gesicka, Grazyna, Member of the Sejm.
· Gosiewski, Przemyslaw, Member of the Sejm.
· Handzlik, Mariusz, Undersecretary of State in President's Office.
· Jaruga-Nowacka, Izabela, Member of the Sejm.
· Karpiniuk, Sebastian, Member of the Sejm.
· Karweta, Vice Admiral Andrzej, Commander-in-Chief of the Polish Navy.
· Kaczynski, Lech, President of the Republic of Poland.
· Kaczynski, Mrs, wife of the President of the Republic.
· Kochanowski, Janusz, Polish Ombudsman for Citizen Rights.
· Kremer, Andrzej, Polish Deputy Foreign Minister.
· Kurtyka, Janusz, Historian and President of the Institute of National Remembrance.
· Natalli-Swiat, Aleksandra, Member of the Sejm.
· Nurowski, Piotr, President of the Polish Olympic Committee.
· Plazynski, Maciej, President of the Polish Community Association.
· Ploski, Tadeusz, Bishop of the Military Ordinariate of the Polish Army.
· Przewoznik, Andrzej, Secretary-General, Council for Protection of Struggle and Martyrdom Sites.
· Putra, Krzysztof, Deputy Speaker of the Sejm.
· Rumianek, Ryszard, Rector of the Cardinal Stefan Wyszynski University.
· Rybicki, Arkadiusz, Member of the Sejm.
· Skrzypek, Slawomir, President of the National Bank of Poland.
· Stasiak, Wladyslaw, Chief of the Office of the President of the Republic of Poland.
· Szczyglo, Aleksander, Head of the National Security Bureau.
· Szmajdzinski, Jerzy, Deputy Speaker of the Sejm.
· Szymanek-Deresz, Jolanta, Member of the Sejm.
· Walentynowicz, Anna, free trade union activist, member of Solidarity (Solidarity heroine).
· Wassermann, Zbigniew, Member of the Sejm.
· Woda, Wieslaw, Member of the Sejm.
· Wojtas, Edward, Member of the Sejm.
· Wypych, Pawel, Secretary of State in the Office of the President of the Republic of Poland.
· Zajac, Stanislaw, Member of the Senate
and several other Members of the Sejm.

ALL POLAND'S TOP PEOPLE WIPED OUT IN ONE HIT
To recapitulate, Poland lost, in addition to the President of the Polish Republic and his wife:

· The Chief of the Polish Air Force.
· The Chief of the Polish Army General Staff.
· The Commander-in-chief of the Polish Navy.
= ALL THE MILITARY SERVICE CHIEFS.

· The head of Polish Intelligence (National Security Bureau).

· The three top officials inside the Office of the President of the Republic.

· The Governor of the National Bank of Poland.

· The Deputy Foreign Minister of Poland.

SUSPICIOUS TIMING AND OVERHAUL THE OLD SOVIET TU-154

Moreover the timing of this 'planned accident' is highly suspicious. For starters, the 25-year-old aircraft had undergone a complete overhaul at a factory in southern Russia late last year, being delivered to the Polish authorities in December 2009.

This makes a planned malfunction likely, especially given that the Katyn massacre ceremony, to be held 70 years after the atrocity, was of course 'known in advance'.

Issues contemporaneous with this catastrophe include:

· Most conspicuously, the peak level of intergovernmental tensions surrounding the disposition and settlement of diverted and stolen funds, given not least that Poland was exploited during the Bush II Administration, when the US Ambassador to Poland was a known George W. Bush crony (to go into no further details here) and Polish institutions were flooded with the proceeds of illicit off-balance sheet trades leveraged off diverted and stolen funds.

· The projected use of the Polish Army's Ustka-Wicko base as a possible site for US missile interceptors. Russia objected strongly and suspended participation in the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe.

· Contracts for Western aircraft.

LONG ARM OF RUSSIA'S CLENCHED FIST DEPLOYED

Historically, when Poland tries to align itself with the West, Russia has deployed the long arm of its clenched fist starting with the Katyn massacre of thousands of Polish officers and key political leaders, so that come the Russian occupation, there was minimal opposition from Poles trying to defend their freedom.

In 1943, Polish General Sikorski's plane crashed, and the General was killed, off Gibraltar, around the time of the Tehran Conference that set the scene for the catastrophic Yalta Conference, which consigned Poland to Soviet control after the war.

And exiled Polish leaders who returned home after the war were 'tried' and executed in the late 1940s and early 1950s by the Soviets and by their Polish puppet Communist governments.

Similar peculiarities were noted elsewhere in Eastern Europe: for instance, the Czech President suddenly 'committed suicide' in 1948 by jumping off a balcony immediately ahead of free elections which never happened.

Now we have the instant liquidation, in one operation, of the Polish President and his wife, the chiefs of the three Polish military services, the Polish Intelligence Chief, the three top officials from the late Polish President's Office (who knew everything), and the Governor of the National Bank of Poland killed in an old Soviet aircraft which had undergone a 'complete overhaul' in a southern Russian factory only four months earlier.

The German DVD 'Black agency' is known for its expertise in fiddling with aircraft controls to procure delayed crashes. It is a 'talent' shared with its secret allies, the covert Soviet GRU-KGB.

Key signatories required for crucial contemporaneous financial undertakings would of course have been those of the President and the Governor of the National Bank of Poland.

No wonder the Russian President, Dmitry Medvedev (Menakhem Aaronovich Mendel') appointed GRU-Prime Minister Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin (Shalomov) to head a commission to 'investigate' the crash despatching the Russian Minister for Emergency Situations, the well-known 'former' Communist apparatchik Sergei Shoigu, to the crash site.

· Any evidence of pre-planned delayed sabotage will need to have been identified and removed from the scene smartish.

That "idiocy" was probably something that was insisted on by their version of the "tea party" so they'd quit wasting so much of the taxpayers' money. It seems like EXACTLY the sort of thing that would be enacted if the tea-baggers ever had their way here.

That's why they call them "unintended consequences". Sure, nobody MEANT for most of the Polish government to be wiped out in one fell swoop, but there ya are...

Maybe there's a Russian conspiracy to grow trees around all their airports to bring down the Polish president! And they planted those trees 75 years ago or more, knowing that this day would come!

For the record, fog means nothing to a SAM.

I'd imagine there would probably be lots of things overheating and popping in the aftermath of a large jetliner crashing, and that such things popping just might sound like gunshots.

Heck, for that matter, it may well have BEEN gunshots, as the ammo in the President's security detail's guns cooked off in the fire...

There is no oil and not much coal.

The Silesia region produces coal. The region has vast reserves but is slow in changing inefficient Soviet era mining techniques to western techniques and technology, so while the region remains rich, production is still slow, especially since coal can be imported at lower costs.

Oil is present in moderate quantities in the Polish Lowland region, the Baltic Sea, and the Carpathians. http://www.pgi.gov.pl/mineral_resources/crude_oil.htm

"Poland has the largest economy in Eastern Europe, with GDP totaling $420 billion in 2007, more than double that of the Czech Republic,[1] and one of the highest levels of foreign investment at $13.9 billion as of 2006.[2] Poland's economy has been growing quickly, at about 6%, for the past 5 years, and was growing at an even faster pace before this[3]. The service sector is expanding, and costs are going up, but manufacturing remains a strength of the Polish economy. In particular, machine building, iron and steel, coal mining, chemicals, shipbuilding, food processing, glass, beverages, textiles are the major industries in Poland.

The largest industry in Poland by revenues is the chemical manufacture sector.[5]. In addition to the chemical industry, Poland has had a very strong presence in manufacturing televisions. Over the last 5 years, Poland has produced from 25 to 35% of TV sets in Europe.[6]

Poland has a highly educated workforce, especially in math and science. This continues to be reflected in high levels of enrollment in universities. Around 65% of the college-age population was enrolled as of 2006[7]. Poland also has one of the largest labor forces in Eastern Europe, at 16.8 million individuals[8]. This is lower only than Russia, Ukraine, and Turkey, and many would not even include these countries in Eastern Europe. Additionally, wages in Poland are low compared to Western European wages. The average wage was around $16,000 annually as of the first quarter of 2008, compared to around $40,000 in neighboring Germany[9]. These factors make Poland an ideal location for sourcing and manufacturing for the broader Eastern European and Western European markets, and this is what many companies do. Approximately 70% of Poland's exports are to other EU countries[10]. This was just under $70 billion in 2005[11], and it topped $100 billion in 2007 estimates, with about $36 billion going to Germany, Poland's largest export partner.[12] Nearly 30% of Polish workers were involved in industry in 2007, and the industrial sector's share of GDP was equivalent.[13]"

The whole cost/benefit to Russia just doesn't seem to work out. Unless you seem something I don't see, in which case- please inform us!

Your assuming Poland is the goal. I think Russia has its eyes on former Soviet states like Ukraine, Belarus, and the Baltics. Poland is NATO and was, until President Obama took office, our closest European ally after Britain.

Russia has western Europe by the balls, but Eastern Europe would likely stand with American opposition to Russian aggression.

While Russia did not orchestrate the crash, its likely they will try to exploit it, especially since Obama mishandled the situation from the start. He went golfing and it was front page in Poland and its seen as the second huge slap to Poland from Obama in less then a year. Obama could have gone (it would have taken longer, but he could have made it). He didn't go, so instead he could have done something...like delivering a wreath to the Polish embassy or something.

Actually those "gunshot" sounds are the sound the wing retaining pins goin - this one comes off as stupidity and carelessness in action, a pilot with some non pilots with political clout doin a lotta backseat driving, and a massive screwup as a direct result.

If there's any malice, it'd be on behalf of the folks who put all of those people on the same plane, which is worth investigating, sure.

The Ron Brown incident on the other hand, there are some serious and very suspicious anomolies - before it got retroactively classified, I got to read the whole FAA/NTSB index on it, and there was enough to merit further investigation which nobody seemed too interested in - that's one of the things I do hold up against Clinton, mind.

But this one, I doubt there was any malice or sabotage regarding the aircraft, trust me, trying to land that heap on manual without an ILS at an unfamiliar field, there didn't *need* to be - this seems more like opportunism than plot, and while sure, folks jumping ON that opportunity might start cappin folk who ask questions, other than putting all the eggs in one basket on purpose, there's no real sign of anything untoward regarding the plane itself or it's attempted landing.

I wouldn't even characterize it as "malice" - more like unintended consequences of base ignorance. If the Tea Partiers had their way in this country, this is exactly the kind of cost-cutting move they'd undertake, I betcha. Hey, what could possibly go wrong, y'know?

Anyone remember Bobby Jindall babbling on about the wastefulness of government programs like "volcano monitoring"? I can totally see how he thinks that would be a waste of time and money, being as there are no known volcanoes in Louisiana. I'm sure people in Seattle think maintaining the levies is a waste of money, too. :)

Unintended consequences of good intentions not thought through, is all I'm sayin'...

I believe in solving problems, not sharing them.

So, as it turns out, this videotape of survivors being shot never existed

A Polish investigation concluded the crash was an accident

It was a lot of paranoia about nothing. Like Trump Russia collusion and just about every post by SECOND and THUGR.

But the current PM of Poland, twin brother of the late President, is convinced. convinced, I tell you!... that Russia.Did.It. and nothing can sway him from his delusional grudge (like, ahem! some people we know) and is steering his nation according to his delusions.
