The Obama administration will accept no more public input for a federal strategy that could prohibit U.S. citizens from fishing some of the nation's oceans, coastal areas, Great Lakes, and even inland waters.

I didn't think it possible, but PN is posting more rabidly about Obama than he did with Bush. Hate to break the news pal, but he's going to be the President for another 3 years, and has a reasonable chance at 4 more after that. So I guess yer just gonna keep wailing away at him with all your nonsensical horsecrap. Wonderful contribution to mankind.

Ditto JS. Aside from that, if we don't do anything about the overfishing of the ocean, we'll be in deep shit. Thank gawd someone is going to DO something about it finally, rather than be in the pockets of the fishing industry and give 'em carte blanche to destroy by overfishing. Doesn't fly, PN; not even a nice try.

Okay, read the article. Pertinent points:
Quote:

it appears that the task force will issue a final report for "marine spatial planning" by late March, with President Barack Obama then issuing an Executive Order to implement its recommendations — whatever they may be.
Note MARINE, as in "ocean", yes? There is nothing there about recreational fishing; yes, it may well be affected, but "Then in late summer, just after he created the task force, these groups produced "Recommendations for the Adoption and Implementation of an Oceans, Coasts, and Great Lakes National Policy." This document makes repeated references to "overfishing," but note
Quote:

...doesn't once reference recreational angling.

Additionally, some of these same organizations have revealed their anti-fishing bias by playing fast and loose with "facts," in attempts to ban tackle containing lead in the United States and Canada.

Hey, I'm all for banning lead, and oh, gawd, it would really kill recreational fishing!!!
Quote:

...recreational angling and commercial fishing are indiscriminately lumped together as harmful to the resource[/quoote]In other words, it's not ABOUT recreational angling, it's about commercial fishing, they just got lumped in there...possibly to avoid a loophole.

I love
Quote:

"what we're seeing coming at us is an attempted dismantling of the science-based fish and wildlife model that has served us so well. There's no basis in science for the agendas of these groups who are trying to push the public out of being able to fish and recreate.
The "science-bsed" model has NOT served us so well, it's caused rampant overfishing, altering of the balance of nature, endangered the survival of various ocean species, and desperately needs revamping.

Scare tactics, nothing more, and grandstand slanting to make it look like recreational fishermen are being targeted; they're not, it's COMMERCIAL overfishing that is the problem.

Just as an aside; there was a period for the public (including recreational fishmermen) to speak out...why no outrcy if they feel so "threatened"?? Maybe most of them don't...?

i think its sort of hard to justify the status quo, when certain delicious species like the blue fin tuna are poised to disappear...i sort of have a small personal stake in this issue, as the beloved salmon of the american river are all but a thing of the past. i have delightful child hood memories of stinking, rotten salmon beached for miles along the shore of the river every summer. my dog would frolic in them. and now, there are none...population has collapsed. if a temporary freeze on destructive, commercial fishing may secure such stank and deliciousness for future generations, i support it.

and also, i just love teh banhammer.
