Just posting this here. Not sure what to believe. I feel like there's been a campaign of fearmongering in the states about terrorism, taking advantage of 9-11 to support various ideological agendas. And the source no longer has any credibility with me because of (for whatever reasons) their last epic failure to predict a terrorist attack.

But I'm hesitant to dismiss this out of hand.

You have a greater chance of falling in your own bathroom and breaking your neck on the sink than you do of ever even MEETING a terrorist, much less being victimized by one.

Worry about shit that matters.

Besides which, were it not for us pickin shit all the time, even the profoundly miniscule threat that exists would mostly go away.

Well, yeah, I know I'm not likely to see any of this. I'm in Salt Lake City. I don't think any terrorists out there are even aware Salt Lake City exists. So it's not myself I'm concerned about, and normally the response you prescribe is my response as well.

And I'm also a little dubious believing anyone the CIA says has WMD actually HAS them after Iraq.

But still, when the CIA starts saying that a terrorist attack with chemical/biological agents is going to hit New York before 2013, and that they're organizing counter-measures that will undoubtedly be a debacle when they're deployed...

There's saying this is Al Qaeda, and I'm not seeing Al Qaeda recently as having any capacity FOR planning. I mean, the Christmas Day shoebomber thing was a crap job, that only got as far as it did because of a stinking typo. Assuming it was a typo.

And the CIA has a lot of resources, if you know what I mean. And they get distracted sometimes.

You're right on.

Probably told this before, but I heard a story that made us all laugh here and which I felt was very appropriate--and this was years ago, when the "terror level" was all the rage.

Guy was sitting in his kitchen eating his Fruit Loops cereal when the news said there was indication that a terrorist strike was imminent, and that cute little colorful terror level bar was being raised to whatever the next color up was. He turned to the TV in surprise and knocked his cereal--Fruit Loops all over the ceiling.

From that day forward, whenever we heard this kind of bullshit, we looked at one another and said "Fruit Loops!"

That's about what it's worth. If/when it happens, it will happen; I have no faith in them being able to stop anything serious, they couldn't even stop the underwear bomber with all the info they had.

Two things: If you let these "reports" scare you, you're buying into THEIR "terrorist tactics", and those who do have a better chance of being propagandized into following the right because "they're better at national security", which is propaganda anyway.

Second: Whatcha gonna do about it? If anyone can think of anything they can do personally about these "warnings" aside from being scared, hey, speak up. Otherwise, all it does is scare us. Which is what they want.

And, of course, in order to STOP it, they'd at least have to WANT TO STOP IT.

Nobody ever really did ask why it was that the Anthrax attacks tracked back to our own weaponized versions of the stuff from Fort Detrich, did they?

My biggest fear when it comes to Al Qaeda is that they'll actually get their hands on something truly nasty, and that nobody will even notice that it's our stuff they use against us. And if we're so hell-bent on stopping them, how is it that they manage to get our goodies in the first place?

Pfftth, you wanna stop terrorism ?

Start in Langley, start in Quantico, and DC, of course - ask where Ramzi Youssefs merry little band got the bomb, or where that anthrax came from, and why the guy they got on tape lootin it was never even questioned, or who was the prime motivator behind the Ft Dix Six or any of those other little plots, ask about the other bombs inside the building in Oklahoma, and why the army base nearby needed a Ryder truck, or even what the hell McVeigh was doing in uniform on that base long after he'd been supposedly discharged.

Ask about an ICQ warning and some mysterious stock trades, art students and communication companies, and movers trucks testing positive for explosives...

Soon enough you'll realize the real threat is our so called protectors, and so called allies, rather than any enemy we created by crapping on them in the first place to "justify" both of the formers misdeeds.

I have a vote and I'm not afraid to use it!

I have a bigger chance of eating it in the overdue 'big one' than of being hurt in a terrorist attack.

People have strange mental processes for risk and reward. The risks that we're familiar with (earthquakes, driving) we underestimate; the rewards (or potential rewards) we're familiar with (the lottery) we also tend to overestimate.

Also, people are very context sensitive - there's a long scenario about going to a play and losing money v losing your ticket which I won't go into now.

Also, in general, people weight risk more than reward.

Anyway, I'm not about to lose any sleep or look for any security changes b/c of a terrorist threat.

Sorry, I elided two thoughts together.

What I should have posted was "b/c of a purported terrorist threat" to respond to you. B/c this is fear-mongering pure and simple, just like the 'Iran with nukes !' campaign. And given people's strange responses to risk, it'll rattle many cages.

But then, I agree with what was posted above - a terrorist attack is inevitable. Sooner or later we'll have pissed enough people off that at least ONE of the many will succeed. So, how to respond to that ? I hope with rational risk assessment !

I for one am glad you posted it. Because we need to be reminded, regularly, that fear is the mind-killer.

If I were afraid of something, it would be that my government is more of a threat to me than Al Qaeda ever will be.

And I *do* think I understand where you're coming from. I'm not about to trust the CIA with stuff like this, for a couple of reasons. One, because they already got it so catastrophically wrong already, and two, because I have a sneaking suspicion that they're trying to pad their resumé, so to speak. I mean, they REALLY DID think that Saddam had WMD, but they couldn't tell us WHY they thought they knew that (because they still had the fucking receipts from when they sold them to him!). And my money would be on them trying to pull the same shit again, and HOPING that Al Qaeda was more stupid than Saddam, and that they could catch them red-handed. But they haven't been able to yet, and they couldn't do it with Saddam, so I have little faith they'd be able to figure it out next time, either.
