The whole idea of internet connected TV does bring up that question, doesn't it ?

Alas, anyone stuck with that job I would profoundly pity, who wants to watch americans watching TV ?
Some fat slob in his underwear drooling into his bag of cheetos while staring numbly back at you...

FOR SEVERAL HOURS.

You have to wonder if sometimes, the most appropriate punishment for conducting illegal surveillance isn't committing the act itself.

Stole this from Firefly. Supposedly, any screen hooked up to the Cortex acts as a two way camera. They don't cover this much in the movie, but that's why River was recorded when the Fruity Oaty Bar commercial was playing, and why it was recorded from that particular angle.

Before then, it was stolen from Nineteen Eighty-Four.

And that was stolen from This Island Earth's interaciter machine.

And as an added bonus, this machine can shoot deadly laser beams at you.

Nineteen Eighty-Four was written in 1948, This Island Earth was produced in 1955. But it could be that the ideas were independently thought up, since they were created so close together.

It's also good to know where certain ideas occurred, so that they can be preserved if they're ever targeted.

The first 1984 movie was released in 1956, then remade in 1984. I forgot to consider the original book. I read the book like 40 years ago, so I can't remember how it describes the spying device.

What I remember from the book was that the main character kept a journal where he wrote down the lies of the Party and history changes, trying to figure out what all has actually happened. He could only write in his apartment, in a little aclove where this telescreen couldn't record him or detect any telling variations in his mood by his heartbeat. Also, during a exercise program, the instructor leading the aerobics class can see all of the people on the other side of the screen, and even rebukes someone for not participating enough.

Surveillance selectively enforced against those who are most profitable to target: Political opposition (all politicians), peons who dare speak in public forum, keyboard commandos, industrial espionage, blackmail of all kinds, criminal suspects, drug dealers (to steal their stash for resale).

0.00001% terrorists, 99.9% nubile naked nymphs. Plenty of volunteers for that. Just surf every home till you see the bare nekked ladies and little girls... A whole new category of XXXhibitionist and voyeur.

I have a vote and I'm not afraid to use it!

And then there's the average american male: 42 years old, 5' 9.5" and 191 pounds; and female: 43 years old, 5' 4" tall and 152 pounds.

Also, don't you have to be connected to the internet for this to happen ? Doesn't that make the answer as to how to address this pretty simple ?

Ikea to the rescue! Just close the doors on the entertainment center when TV is not in use.

You shouldn't be subverting the government while watching "Law and Order" anyway. It's split mind, bad Zen, and you may miss important plot points.

The latest exercise infomercial includes a webcam that rebukes you for not using proper form.

Not to mention have the webcam hooked up.

Standard issue PN hysteria aside, the actual screen is not a camera yet. Even if it were built in, all one needs is a piece of black tape.

You've not used a MacBook lately, eh? I never "hooked up" my webcam, but there it is, right above my screen, LOOKING AT ME. ;)

Seriously, though, I *HAVE* caught it "ON" (little green LED lit up next to the camera's "eye") before, and there's no easy way that I can find to turn it OFF, short of shutting down and restarting.

But yes, for now, black tape is your friend. :)

But what happens when the CCD is built right into the LCD? That's a bit of a worry. You know what they say...

I had to use another PC for a while that had one of them stupid webcams hooked up, and the discussion group required it to be - although oddly enough, didn't have any rule against pointing it at a wall...

Did you know it's very possible to insert your own signal to the line, resulting in a pattern of flashes and colors that's very effective in provoking nausea and disorientation, and could potentially provoke seizures ?

And let's also remember the police surveillence camera we re-routed to a porno channel, which they didn't report for MONTHS, heh heh

Technology is always a double edged sword.
