Hello,

Nice to see someone doing something with all the daylight we get out here.

DREAMTROVE

not even sure what that's supposed to mean, but it's a distraction. I've become bored with them.

The solar plant is also a distraction. Steinmetz undermined this argument a century ago when it was put forth by Edision: The problem with electrical power, Steinmetz argued, is that it cannot easily carry over distance. The generation of large amounts of power used by massive human settlements, or more to the point, industry, like their own General Electric, would have to be on site. One of the more dangerous inventions of the century, alternating current, was the ultimate solution that they were able to piece together.

Now, sure, we have superconductors, and in theory, you could carry power an infinite distance, but we all know that no one will ever spend the money to do this, and no one will have the capacity to store it. China already has it's multi-billion dollar boondoggle in the Tibetan desert, but TPTB are going to resist Steinmetz's real solution, as they have for a century, because they know what it will mean: Anarchy.

If each independent household and industry is capable of the production of it's own power, that gives them not only freedom and the means for independent action, it means that "off-grid activity" will stand "unrecorded."

This is what they fear about illegal immigrants, just as they fear unrecorded births, transportation, and so many other things: unrecorded unmonitored human behavior, potentially organized, the only real threat to their lock on power: someone who doesn't need them.

Still, I applaud the efforts of probably pointless solar stations for their unintended consequence: They will force solar cell manufacturers into a level of mass production that will cause a collapse in the cost of solar energy.

Hello,

The solar station is no more pointless than any powerplant of any variety. Since I have power in my home, I can attest to the fact that whatever inefficiencies are inherent in the system, it does convey power successfully.

However, the age of each home generating its own power may be near. I recently attended the construction and dedication of a Net Zero Energy home build by Habitat for Humanity. With large solar panels and solar water heating, the home is likely to generate all the power it will use throughout the year.

I do agree that the more solar we build, the cheaper and more effective our solar will become, so this is a win, win.

The cost of getting power from the desert to a usable location does make it pointless, but yes, it will move us in the right direction. In the US, where we have desert cities like Las Vegas and LA, SD, CA, then there's a potential. The Chinese plant is a thousand miles from the nearest city, there's just no way to get that power *out* of the desert, but it's a tremendous cash boom to the industry and will prompt more serious mass production.

Hello,

You nay have overlooked that this solar farm is going to provide power to Phoenix, a big city in a big dry valley that is drenched with sun.

So... yeah. Turns out it's a great idea. On all points.
