Pffth, any time you give a kid medication you oughta be on watch for adverse effects, that's your responsibility as a parent.

And here I thought you were gonna bring public attention upon the bad habit folk in Maryland got of using such medication to "quiet" their kids even when they're not sick, which is an ongoing problem every bit as much as the horrific flood of ritalin over there is.

Shame on you, you can do better than this, John.

You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

Acetaminophen is a top cause of liver damage in this country because so many people pop over the counter pain killers like nothing. It's a risk for everyone, and especially the more delicate systems of a child. The overall reliance on drugs here has disgusted me for a long time, and giving them to children with any regularity is beyond irresponsible.

I have a vote and I'm not afraid to use it!

Chlorpheniramine, the compound that caused the death, is an antihistamine, something that relieves allergy symptoms.

Tylenol (acetaminophen) is an antipyretic (fever reducer) recommended for children since aspirin can cause Reye's Syndrome.

The problem is the 'plus' in Tylenol Plus. It is better to give your children targeted medication rather than all-in-one medication, since the child was suffering from a cold, not allergies. (Though experience has shown that for children who wheeze, antihistamines do help keep colds from becoming atypical asthma attacks.)

DREAMTROVE

Never take or give anything unless you understand the chemical mechanism involved. Guaifenesin (aka Guaiac) is the only thing proven to improve your survival chances from a cold or flu. Drink with lots of water. The herbal treatment used by the Arowak increases the amount of water that the body retains, and as a result, decreases the viscosity of mucous, making it easier to expel, an thus harder for the infection to reproduce.

People say "never drink milk when you have a cough." If you do, the effect is interesting: I've done it many times. Infected flem will draw in the milk, making a vary obvious white glob, which I find much easier to cough up. Still, I only drink it right before coughing up. Mainly, I'd stick with the guaiac. I think there's probably a very short list of medicines that people should take, and almost all of them are herbals.
