I dare everyone here to try something. For, say, three days, take each post at face value. If you respond, reread what you're responding to carefully and leave behind your prejudgments of the PERSON posting, only respond with what you believe about what they wrote, as if it had been posted by a brand new member you knew nothing about.

Betcha can't do it. Any takers?

But for me at least, it would be wonderfully refreshing not to know what certain people are going to reply to certain other people (not just Wulf), but instead to read what they feel about what was POSTED, period.

Probably impossible, but I think it might let us learn something about our prejudices. Or not.

Oh yeah, not possible - I tend to sit back and watch for a while when a new person posts until I can get a feel for em, so I'd be like... not posting, heh.

And given my hours and current situations, posting here is one of the few entertaining uses of my time I currently have, bleh.

Oh dear. King is one of the few people who gets under my skin. I really don't know anymore if they're really a troll or generally lacking any social skills whatsoever.

I try to take everyone at face value, which is why I ask so many questions, so I can refine how I understand the opinions of the people I'm talking to. I even try to do it with King, but it is so VERY HARD, because that poster just says and does stuff that sets me off.

Point of order: when he was whining every day for three days about his threads being moved, posting a NEW thread every time it was moved, and the last thread he posted was one long line of 'o's and '0's that stretched out the page.

I think everyone heard my patience snap. I'm a little ashamed now of the campaign I went on to get King to stop spamming after that. It was effective, but that's the ugly side of me I've mentioned before.

Byte, don't feel bad. Kingelbert so very richly deserved it.

I give Wulf a hard time, as I've pointed out. But that in no way means that I think he's a troll. He's here, he contributes. The fact that we don't see eye to eye on much of anything doesn't get in the way of us at least trying to hash some stuff out - and hopefully from having some fun along the way!

Why, it was Wulf ! Of course !

And you wonder why people snark at Wulf ? Maybe you should wonder why he does it first.

DREAMTROVE

I'm in if the posts are like the ones on this page: i.e. they stick to a size limit. I will read 200 words or so and then quit like I usually do.

Not only is this my time limit, but it's also a means of being fair and balanced:

If one person posts 90% of the information, reading everything, watching all the videos, would favor them. I can't weight everything fairly if people don't post relatively equally. Not a judgment, just a time constraint.

The only exceptions is that I read whole posts that are specifically to me, and I write long posts to a specific other person.

Well, that was an idea which went nowhere! I sat down to start reading today and ended up in three different threads which I didn't reply to, one because it was virtually nothing BUT personalities going back and forth, and the other two because they just went on and on and on and personalities were part of it. Too much to deal with.

So I guess it's not possible; was worth a try, anyway. Such is life.

Hmm. Good point. I think River's comment on Wulf's was interesting. Snarking around, I see that people have been calling people a Dreamtrove, while Dreamtrove has been calling people River. Sorry about that, no offense intended.

All sockpuppets aside, anyone who is actually River6213 feel free to post as such. We all agreed in a thread a while ago to bury that hatched with the only dissenter as ironically an eager responder to this thread.

One other issue: How do I possibly allow my brain to look at Pirate News' posts objectively?

I like John, and he has interesting things to say, but problems arise:

1. Honestly, I don't read a lot of this (when they are pasted stories or links, videos, I watch almost no one's videos.) because I like to give equal time and he just posts more threads.

2. If I were to look at PN's posts without taking the name into consideration, I would have to say "You're batsh*t crazy" every fucking time (No offense, but it takes knowing you to really treat you fairly.)

Seriously, my first response to Pirate News was something to the effect of "hate jews much?" I suspect that I'm in an almost unanimous majority on that one.

Again on Wulf, I think I'd make the same obvious post.

We apply filters to who we're reading, even if we do it subconsciously. A lot of that filtering we do is actually *towards* fairness. Nik, if you were to go on a rant against jews they way John does? You'd probably get slammed, because you're relatively new, and we don't have a built in filter for that.

I agree with the spirit here: Don't hold grudges. Treat each post anew.

20?!?!? I think you should click on archived threads. I remember deliberately starting one, on your behest if I recall, to see if I could get the infighting lemming crowd to break 200 posts on that nonsense, and not only did they, but it was then bested several times by others, some of whom weren't even trying...

I was keepin it simple for brevitys sake.

Which is why I am against chopping stuff into smaller and smaller chunks, mind you - it loses the rich explanory detail and personal impressions of the poster, both of which are quite important to me in a conversation carried by plaintext.

Heheheheheehhhh... Well, I'm no Brit, but I've definitely participated in more than my share of those threads. As have most of us, at one time or another. I think everyone here has "triggers" that set them off, and issues that they just WILL NOT let go of.

But Niki, if it makes you feel any better, this place is an absolute island of tranquility compared to what it was about, oh, say a year ago, leading into the election.

I tried, but I guess I just don't get the point of limiting my responses to what someone "says".

When I make an argument, I bring a raft of assumptions, values, biases, emotions, information, and logic along with it. I guess I would call it 'meta-content'. People SHOULD respond to meta-content as well as the text of my post. I HOPE they find a flaw in my logic, expose a false assumption, redirect my emotions, supersede my goals with better ones, give me new information, or change my outlook in some way... that is the POINT of discussion, is it not?

I would only hope that they do it in a respectful and rhetorically honest fashion, and not resort to strawmanning, slippery-slope, ad hominem, post-fact or other fallacious arguments. So I can't promise to limit the scope of my answer, but I CAN try to limit the snark that tends to go along with it!

Well, thanx for at least trying, those of you who have. And I'm glad it at least brought a subject to the fore; maybe that will have a teeeeeny impact on some of us...myself included, tho' I always try REALLY hard to respond to the post, not as much the person, and not to snark.
Quote:

I'm afraid I have to agree on PN, and on King...I just simply don't read their posts or watch their videos or anything else. There are those like Wulf who are worth reading and responding to, as they are at least sometimes (and more than "sometimes" when it comes to Wulf, it seems to me) reasonable and worth debating. The other two: why bother? As has been said, by me as well, it's pretty obvious which threads they start by the titles, and even if I pop in out of curiosity occasionally, once I see the name of who started it, I pop right back out. Better and more interesting things to do with my life than or, as the Morford piece I just posted said, try to talk to idiots.

Frem, what you said about the 200 "DID TO", "DID NOT", etc., posts; that's what it was like the entire time I was on another board, and it will stay that way. There, 200 is NOTHING, it can go on for 400 or 500 easy. See above. I'm glad you said
Quote:

But Niki, if it makes you feel any better, this place is an absolute island of tranquility compared to what it was about, oh, say a year ago
Mike, it's wonderful to hear, and maybe a tiny indication of people having brains enough to change (even if just at least temporarily). Over there, when even remarked upon, immediately the replies were "It's been like this for six years just fine"; "can't take it, get out"; and "stop trying to control us!" I've seen exactly two threads that TRULY devolved into what I saw daily over there, so pat yourselves on the back!

Sometimes people would remark on it nonetheless, and one person put up a thread asking for peace--said for those who agreed, please just reply "yes" or something, even lurkers...the "yes"es went on for ages, which showed how many kept their mouths shut or went to lurking. Made no difference, of course, and she was attacked as "controlling"--and this was one of the sweetest people there!

So you see, JUST the responses to this thread, and that a couple of people actually TRIED, speak clearly to this place being "open" in that it's not just run by a clique that's determined to KEEP IT THAT WAY forever, and says tons...as does the fact that I wasn't immediately attacked (viciously, by the way) for even suggesting it.

You guys are kewl; I got no complaints. It's just the way it IS...all I guess I'd suggest is if anyone feels like keeping it in mind that people sometimes change, even if only slightly, and maybe now and again try to read what they're actually saying, not what you "expect" them to say or your opinions of them from the past.

At one point my husband at I did couples' counseling. One of the things we learned is that people have patterns: You say A, I say B, you say C, and away we go. Jim and I changed our patterns and wow, it was amazing how everything else changed! Not perfectly, mind you, but it gave us OPTIONS. Not the same here, obviously, but interesting to have learned.

That's my sermon for the day ; thank you for not attacking my suggestion, thank you for trying, however briefly, and thank you especially for recognizing it's real.

All are probably unavoidable, given we're human, but it can't hurt to even just keep it in mind when we can. Ooops, promised to stop sermonizing; I'll shut up now.
