Upcoming Military Robot Could Feed on Dead Bodies

Fox News
July 14, 2009

It could be a combination of 19th-century mechanics, 21st-century technology — and a 20th-century horror movie.

A Maryland company under contract to the Pentagon is working on a steam-powered robot that would fuel itself by gobbling up whatever organic material it can find — grass, wood, old furniture, even dead bodies.

Robotic Technology Inc.'s Energetically Autonomous Tactical Robot — that's right, "EATR" — "can find, ingest, and extract energy from biomass in the environment (and other organically-based energy sources), as well as use conventional and alternative fuels (such as gasoline, heavy fuel, kerosene, diesel, propane, coal, cooking oil, and solar) when suitable," reads the company's Web site.

That "biomass" and "other organically-based energy sources" wouldn't necessarily be limited to plant material — animal and human corpses contain plenty of energy, and they'd be plentiful in a war zone.

EATR will be powered by the Waste Heat Engine developed by Cyclone Power Technology of Pompano Beach, Fla., which uses an "external combustion chamber" burning up fuel to heat up water in a closed loop, generating electricity.

The advantages to the military are that the robot would be extremely flexible in fuel sources and could roam on its own for months, even years, without having to be refueled or serviced.

Upon the EATR platform, the Pentagon could build all sorts of things — a transport, an ambulance, a communications center, even a mobile gunship.

In press materials, Robotic Technology presents EATR as an essentially benign artificial creature that fills its belly through "foraging," despite the obvious military purpose.

I've been following these sorts of projects for years...It was only a matter of time before they started to appear...

Miniaturization is now the goal...Ultimately there may be versions of this that are the size of insects or small birds...

The war/famine/pestilence victims should provide plenty of fuel for a longish while...

I dunno about meat eating, I guess caloric fuel value has it's place - but that's WAY outside my areas of competence.

But it's not bonkers, no matter what one thinks of PN, several UK researchers have also made strides in this area.

Also the local geek farm folks caught someone else's dragonfly bot recently, and another one about the size of a largish mosquito or mosquito hunter, maybe 1-1/4" across the "wings", recently, and are dissecting them with interest.

Whether it's other geeks, corpies, or Gov, we do not know, but they're working on a detection system we can sell to paranoids and corporations fearful of corp-espionage at the current time.

As for how to catch em, that little short range 4 shot HERF weapon they built off a stungun battery plucks em right outta the sky - plans are now available online if you dig in the right places.

Happy hunting.

So , are these spybot flyers powered by Capissen engines , or what ?

I mean , you zap 'em with a little RF , and they fall right out of the sky...

Am working on anti-surveillance countermeasures myself...

Yah, the HERF fries the electronics in em, and if you nail em in flight they drop like a rock - doesn't do nothin (to our knowledge) to real bugs though.

We designed that little HERF for munging up surveillence equipment like red light cameras and other unconstitutional intrusions, but it works quite well on annoyances too - although given that the effects of such on the human body haven't been tested or explored, we have a standing rule against aiming it at people.
(Google: HERF gun, but be prepared to dredge through tons of crap and bad info)

More's the pity, cause there was this jerk in front of me in line at the supermarket having a really obnoxious (as in loud, profane and sexist) discussion with one of his buddies on his cellphone, and I was very tempted...
