One thing, in light of recent rantage - while many are, not ALL police are knuckle-dragging simian louts, and a lot of flak has fallen on them in light of using hostage situation response tactics to mass shootings, since sealing the perimeter and waiting till the perp gets done killing and surrenders or offs themself is a damn BAD idea, multiplying the damage.

While some departments had already been training patrol officers to respond in defensive diamond formation, it wasn't working out real well and recent events have shown it to be also ineffective.

And frankly, they signed up for the risk when they took the job, to shirk it because THEY might get hurt instead of a member of the public is shameful and irresponsible - but an untrained officer responding to a chaotic situation like that risks disaster as well, so what to do ?

Several folks in the security industry have been throwing their assistance behind re-training officers for this scenario, using a run-to-gun methodology combined with the principles laid out by Rex Applegate, Jelly Brice, Bill Jordan and others for effective head-on tactics.

The principle is to get TO where the shooting is going on ASAP and put a STOP to it, immediately, as priority - cause you simply can NOT wait, for example Cho was shooting an avg of 1 victim every 15 seconds, 75% of them fatally, compare that to needing 14-45 minutes for a tac-team to arrive, much less get set up and ready to rumble.

While seeking cover for defensive advantage in any other situation would be the wisest thing to do, every single second the perp is not forced to deal with YOU, it's one more second he has to shoot the innocent - this is one of the rare few cases where the aggressive charge is the *appropriate* tactic for a law enforcement officer despite the risk.

Some more data on that, including confirmation that most "active shooters" can and do seek out "gun-free-zones" as soft targets to minimize potential resistance.

And since point shooting is a critical skillset for this type of response, being one of the few old bastards around who knows anything about it, I've been teaching a couple cadre not only how, but how to teach it cause I *suck* as an instructor when dealing with authoritarian types.

At least they're payin for the ammo, cause the shit ain't cheap these days.

Good use of tax dinero though, cause better marksmanship leads to less stray bullets and injured bystanders/damaged property, even if these officers never face an active shooter situation themselves.

I hope to hell ya can't get rsi/carpal tunnel from shooting, my fingers are numb and stingy still even as I type this - pity the poor cops who had to listen to me bitch about my local dept the whole freakin time, although I surmise it's prolly some deterrent to that behavior among themselves given the bitching is coming from the guy who's slamming whole magazines into tea saucer groups at 15 meters from a low-carry/half-hip while demonstrating the essential principles.

Oh yes, and when someone is teaching you to shoot, stand to the LEFT side, unless you have a fetish for hot brass, and I don't mean well stacked female captains!

Gotta practice some point-shooting, 'cause yesterday at the range I wasn't hittin' NOTHIN'! I've been dealing with some eye problems for a while now, and in trying to retrain my eyes a bit to let the left eye dominate when the right one goes wonky, it's made it damned hard to acquire a sight picture quickly. Not a good situation to be in when you're used to combat-style shooting, putting two or three rounds into the target very quickly, and then moving to the next target.

Had the targets been real live bad guys yesterday, they'd have all been hurtin' for certain, but I'm not sure any of them would have been down for the count. Worst day at the range in a long, long time. :(

But now I've got something new to try, and hopefully it'll help.

I'm also looking at a little Ruger 22/45 Mk III for practice, since I can still load up on .22LR ammo for fifty bucks per thousand. Given the price of ammo lately, cheaper is definitely better, because not practicing isn't doing a damn bit of good.

Thanks for the tips on that, Frem. I'm going to be spending more time reading up on it and trying it out.

Well, since I have depth-perception issues anyways, a sight picture isn't likely to do me all that much good - not that you'll get one from Bill Jordan-type low carry/half hip anyhows...

One thing that helps a lot is using a weapon suited for it, and alas that I had to retire my Colt Mustang/Pocketlite recently, so a little practice with the newbie is not a bad thing.

The newbie being a Bersa .380ACP and a DAMN nice piece of work for $225.00USD

You'll note the muzzle doesn't move much when you rapid fire it, although I *DID* wanna slap this guy a couple times for muzzle sweeping his camera person (if one), that's a no-no.
