Rue,

They are VERY valid.

Sure, make fun, ignore, say that they are fringe elements, whatever...

The line is being drawn in the sand.

I, personally, always believed that the first stand would come from our great state of Texas.

I ignore, usually, the hooting of politicians.

However, this governor, is actually making sense.

"We didn't like oppression then, we don't like oppression now."

States rights, now. And forever more.

That's encouraging to be sure. I visited the Texas State Capitol a couple of years ago and was struck by the independent nature. The state seal prominently displayed shows the flags of the six nations that have flown over Texas. It seems to underline the notion that national sovereignty is a temporal thing, as though they are currently a member of the US, but that could change.

I'd like to see more states take this attitude. I think that was what the FF expected and were counting on to keep the proper balance. Over the years, developments like the Civil War and expanded federal taxation, especially through income tax, have tipped the balance to the point that most states can't exercise their power effectively. The result is an overblown Federal Government that operates unchecked, primarily on behalf of its corporate sponsors.

"We'll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false." -- William Casey, Reagan's presidential campaign manager & CIA Director (from first staff meeting in 1981)

Is this the same Governor Rick Perry who wanted the "state's right" to require HPV vaccines for adolescent girls, despite some rather extreme side effects of those vaccines?

Oh, and he tried to railroad that program through the state legislature, and the head of the pharmaceutical company that makes the vaccine just happens to be a personal friend and one of his biggest contributors.

Are you talking about THAT Rick Perry? Yeah, he seems to be real big on individual rights. Mostly he believes you have the "right" to do what he tells you to do.

Stop cleaning your guns and stop packing your suitcases, Wulfy; Texas ain't gonna secede any time soon. Wanna put $100 on it? I'll put $100 on it that Texas will still be part of the union on January 20, 2012, and that Texas will still be taking that government money and spending those federal dollars. Whattaya say, Wulf? Wanna put your money where your heart is?

Perry's term is up in 2010. He's facing some challengers in his bid to take an unprecedented third term as Texas governor, from the likes of fellow Republican Kay Bailey Hutchison, Secession Party candidate Larry Kilgore, possibly from self-proclaimed "Texas Jewboy" Kinky Friedman as an Independent, among others. Perry is actually pretty vulnerable this time around, since his mentor George W. Bush isn't really setting any fund-raising records at any appearances right now.

This "Texas Secede" movement is going to amount to what it's always amounted to: a fart in a windstorm.

I suspect you'll win your bet, assuming there are any takers. But I still like seeing at least some noise made on constitutional grounds. I'll have to dig into this a bit and see what they wrote up, and who actually did it.

And I confess - I changed the thread title. I only changed one word; I corrected the spelling of "secede".

I'm not trying to kill anyone's buzz. I'm not trying to say that there aren't constitutional grounds to try to put the federal government in its place. I'm not even suggesting that Rick Perry might not mean what he says. But it is awfully convenient that he only says it when a "liberal" is in the White House, and was happy to bow down in subservience to his lord and master for the last eight years, while the federal government got insanely larger and drained Texas, among other states, of some of the best of their young people to send them off to die and be maimed in a needless, unwarranted, unjustified war.

But NOW he's upset with the government.

Personally, I sincerely hope he turns down every cent of bailout money and stimulus money. He won't, of course, but he'll SAY he did. I think he should be held to that. Turn down the money. Wanna secede? Texas has the right to do that; it's written in our state constitution, and it was insisted that we be allowed to vote to secede if we so desired, upon our joining the Union after the Civil War. So turn down every federal dollar, Rick. And good luck with that whole election thing. :)

FREMDFIRMA

(RANT WARNING: Find Cover - disclaimer: May include nuts or nutlike rambling)

WARNING, WARNING, CLASS SIX DISTURBANCE IMMINENT.

I'm prolly about to seriously piss off some Texans here...

But lemme say in my defense that I *DO* know they are as individuals, as varied and different as anyone else, ok ?

But see, I lived there for a while, tried to run a PC repair business too, and I left that state with a seriously bad taste in my mouth about it, and a not-too-kind opinion of Texans as a general whole.

The one thing that struck me so harsh was the abysmal hypocrisy I got to see every day, something very well represented in thier history as far back as 1830, thumbing their nose and sneering at the laws of those who helped em immigrate and settle, then begging for protection against the natives, then using that very protection against the very folk they begged it from.
(Battle of Gonzales/Battle of the Cannon)

And while the courage of the defenders of the Alamo is indeed worthy of note, it wasn't exactly common at the time, nor is it today.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Runaway_Scrape
Course, the folk at the Alamo didn't have nowhere to run TO, so there's that, also - I do give em this, backin a Texan into a corner is just freakin *askin* for it, no matter how ya slice it.

And how they went about it, start to finish, isn't exactly the kind of behavior one would hold up as any kind of example, mind you, and if they ever truly meant any of that bullshit about secession, they could have pulled it off at the end of the civil war when the aptly name General Slaughter and his buddy Col Ford worked out a cease-fire with the Mexicans and Col T Barret, displaying typical Federalist-Union arrogance, decided to attack Fort Brown against orders because he thought they'd heard of Gen Lees surrender and would throw in the towel quickly...

Whereupon the Confederate Texans SOUNDLY whipped Barrets ass and all but obliterated his forces.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Palmito_Ranch

Facing a weary and weakened Union primarily concerned with the exploitation of it's new protectorates and the need to fully crush them under it's boot heel (aka the Reconstruction) - all the Texans, and their mostly-intact forces had to do was pull back and force the Union Army to try marching across the blistering wastelands of Texas in high summer, then cut them off from their supply lines and just let them bake out there for a while.

Meanwhile the Mexicans would have backed them not only to piss in the Unions tea, but because while they didn't much like the Texans, with good reason and bad blood between em, they HATED the Union, and it's dangerous imperial ambitions, and would rather have Texas as a buffer zone in between them and the Federalists, since by then enough blood had spilled due to their own brush with the monster behind the facade of Federalism (That being Santa Anna* and his cronies) that they wanted no part of it, a lesson which they failed to remember, and paid dearly for, several times over in their own history.

So having almost perfect-storm chances for secession with a minimum of bloodshed or military force involvement - what do they do ?
Why throw in the towel, quickly and firmly.
And with some rather bizarre legal wranglings relative to that later.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Texas_v._White

So no, I don't buy that Republic of Texas secession bullshit, cause as soon as the US Army shot so much as a cap pistol at them, they would wet themselves, flee and surrender a little while later.
(only a damn FOOL chases a Texan into a corner, though!)
Kinda like they mostly did in the 1800s.

As for modern Texans, they're all about helping hand and community spirit when THEY need a little help, but suddenly all about DIY and self-reliance when anyone ELSE does, I saw that so often it actually made me ill to think about, at no time more so than dealing with what they laughably refer to as a medical care system, particularly when my assigned providers reaction to a life threatening infection was something along the nature of "fuck off, Yankee".

And yes, they use Yankee as a perjorative in the EXACT same blend of hatefulness one would use a racial slur, and I even had a cashier once *refuse* to ring up my purchases cause I was one of them Yankees, pffth.

Take the worst connotation possible of Redneck or Hillbilly, triple it and add a seasoning of some bizarre ass regional-race-hate and you maybe come close to just HOW nasty they are about it.

Oh yes, and throw in outright blatant hateful racism against anyone of hispanic, spanish or mexican descent, regardless of their citizenship or how good their english is, in the most bitter and unrepentant fashion I've ever seen with a hefty helping of hateful nasty for any other "damn foreigner" of any stripe, including those much-despised Yankees.

Only other place I've ever seen that kind of despicable bitterness is out in new england, and in either place it starts with the same phrase.
"You ain't from around here, are ya ?"
Seen enough of that bullshit from that type that the phrase above qualifies as "Fightin Words" when you say em to me, nowadays.

And their as-mentioned laughable medical care system is pure epic fail when it comes to prosthetic technology, I got right sick of noticing that most of the folk with a tin cup and sign were amputees who couldn't get a decent prosthetic and had no idea where they might, and after writing up a contact list for the eleventh one and losing my bet with myself over how common that was, that was the moment I decided I really didn't wanna live there no more, especially when my assigned provider flat refused to even have anything to DO with prosthetics, leaving me in the same lurch as the fit had gone off and it would soon we unwearable without adjustment.

The real killer was how they do business though - anywhere else I've ever worked, they know how to deal with the certifiable wanker we refer to as a "permanently unsatisfied customer".

You know the type, they come in DETERMINED to *be* unsatisfied, and nothing you do, no matter how big a loss you eat for em, no matter how many extra miles you go, it ain't ever gonna be good enough, and they'll throw a tantrum and scream for more - yet they KEEP coming back, don't they ?

And a sensible business will cut them off, or send them to the competition, right ?

Not in Texas, nope, they appease and appease, and then take it out on the employees, then bitch that they can't keep people cause everyone's lazy and doesn't wanna work!

My two flunkies were actually quite shocked when I threw that one lady out of my shop, and bodily-assisted her husband when he didn't take well to polite suggestion, and followed by handing them their machine AND their money, telling them to never come back.
(Gives em nothing to bitch about, legally or otherwise, and permanently cuts your losses to a single transaction on the spot)

And yet these types kept comin, and kept expecting appeasement, and I decided not only did I not wanna live there, I didn't wanna do business there either, it was too much a headache for the money - although I did make a hefty profit on the side by archiving legacy data off everything from 3-1/2, 5-1/4, and 8 inch floppies, even Bertinoulli Carts, to CD Format for various companies at a per-megabyte price, since I had specialised machines hand built to do exactly that - no matter what medium you originally had it on, I had SOMETHING that could read it and burn it to CD for ya.

Oh yes, did I mention the unholy pollution downwind of factory row ?

Or that none of em know how to drive ?

Not like it ain't a problem HERE, either, and Michigan dun even have an excuse!

Did I mention the ever present, ever hostile wildlife, up to and including these EVIL goddamn ants that have a hankering for your electrical equipment, up to and including PC power supplies ?
Lemme tell you, THAT was a brick-passer moment, seeing a fekkin swarm of the hell spawned things come charging out of there!
At least then we knew why it didn't work...
Oh, and you do NOT wanna get bit by the cursed things neither.

And these freakin fuzzy, inch long bastards they call cowkillers, and they HISS at you, I am so not kidding...

And the Labor Day swarm of whateverthehell those THINGS are.

And yes, everything's bigger in Texas most CERTAINLY applies to the friggin mosquitos, we're talkin about a number six shot in a 20G kinda big...

And the cockroaches, 3-4inch long bastards that can FLY, now I know where Army mess tents get their supply from.

Ummm, yeah, btw, did I mention I HATE bugs ?

And yes, Governor "Gardasil" Perry is a sumbitch of the worst order, universally fulla shit, and quite deserves to roast on a spit in his beloved Xtian hell forever, and if you want further confirmation he's a crackbrain just look at his picks for State Board of Education, for cryin out loud, McLeroy ? WTF does this dude smoke in private to think that was a good idea ?

Not really very fond of Texas, as a general rule, I guess it's a good place to live... if you're Texan, but if you ain't, it's just about Hell.

It's also fulla crazy people, like my buddy Tei, who got taken into custody for his own safety when the National Guard caught him on the beaches of Corpus Christi during Tropical Storm Francis (1998) with a surfboard headed out to catch some waves... knowing Tei, he woulda DONE it.

Apologies to fellow Browncoat Texans, and all, I know there's good down there, but damned if I saw much of it at the time.

Yeh it's a sad day when the Left makes Glen Beck a radio superstar. I am a right winger. Alot of these neocons are just corporate mouth peices. Beck talks about how great muslim people are and Al Sharpen is his buddy. Libs give me a hard time about listening to Rush, I'm listening to sports radio. I have a head set on and they just assume. Rush and Hannity are hate the working man just as much as jap driven libs with degrees who now are out of cushy jobs thank God. Now they got to work for a liven. O'bama is doing the same thing JFK did and look what happen. The Left does not get it we are not Socialists. There targeting citizens for buying ammo, guns, and websites like stormfront.com. Plus Nazis are libs and socialists. Gay, art types, and the state that is liberal to me. A true conservative comes from poverty works and betters himself independently. When I lived around libs they hated dudes like me. Coast to Coast use to be a Libertarian show, with George Noory he is just another liberal democrat spokesman. Sports radio alot libs in that Dan Patrick with Oberdog, Jim Rome (punk), and Collin Coward (mama's boy). There should be no politics in sport's radio. Czaben with conservative points its sports man, northern virginia boy hard to break. At least Vegas still has the old style give ya sports no drama and odds. Umm, you DO know that Stormfront is both a hard right hate site, and in fact a Gov sponsored honeypot to collect up useful idiots for their agent provocateurs to set up as patsies, just like Elohim City was, yes ?

Turn over three rocks in the hard-right-hate collective, and you'll find folks on a Government payroll under two of em, if it weren't for the plants and ringers feedin em our goddamn tax money by the shovel-full, that whole movement would have collapsed as utterly as Black Socialism did simply because of its own innate unsustainability.

I mean, a racially motivated hate site, on the INTERNET?

How you gonna tell what ethnicity, color, religion or political bent someone is unless they tell you, and even then most people lie.

Of course, the Govgoons ain't the only ones who can squeeze a little juice out of a honeypot to accomplish their own ends, neither...

And simple minded people blinded by their own prejudices, petty little hatreds and outrages are ever so EASY to manipulate - it's all in knowing where the gears and levers are in their empty little heads, and pulling the right ones.

And since they don't have a single original thought or concept at all in their square, empty little heads, once you can bend one, you can bend em ALL.

And as an added bonus, you don't even have to care what happens to em, cause having surrendered any value that would make me consider them a human being before I even got there, they are of course... completely disposable.

Hello,

If I remember my history, (and it has been a while) Texas independence was won by a number of prominent men who fled to the area in order to avoid their obligations and to escape their failures. Some of them were downright jerks.

Oh, for the record, I ain't against secession per se, I just don't think Texas would do it despite their huge amount of smacktalk.

I think if anyone does, it'll happen in New England, especially in one particular area that's built a complete backup infrastructure (not a bad idea in and of itself) in case of that eventuality and being "cut off" by the FedGov.

And Sarge makes a good case related to them being in range to actually reach with an angry mob while they're still pissed off enough to do something about it.

Oh, and PC ?

What in the name of hell ever possessed you to think that I was a "liberal" in your distorted application of the term ?

Imma Kropotkinist-Anarchist, for crying out loud, a whole different animal from an entirely different spectrum, and on any given day get called a freakin "liberal" by so-called Conservatives AND a freakin "rightist" by so-called Liberals cause I don't play ball with either side.

And I been formulatin plans to use the righty-whitey nutburgers as a blockade against the more unconstitutional and/or counterproductive policies of this administration a year before it even got voted on, since the electors generally make that call long before the public even gets their easily manipulated, un-verifiable (thanks to Diebold and Co) and legally-ignored so-called "vote" - and while the dumb bastards with their fancy cigars and overpriced booze in smoke filled back rooms DO sweep for listening devices, they do it in the FM band, and never once did they unscrew the electrical outlets to see what was behind them, the bloody fools.

I have my own agenda, and as often as not I don't bother tellin folk what it is, and even then you've only got my word for it, which you'd be a damned fool to take on face value.

That said, manipulating a bunch of racist ultraconservative pricks into something they ought to have sense enough to do themselves, if they cared about the Constitution as much as they claim to, doesn't exactly interfere with MY sleep at night, and given that their primary grudge against this administration is cause it's run by someone of color, it's all too easy to rile them up into acting in any capacity whatsoever against it without them even having the slighest awareness of that happening - hell, you could prolly tell em right to their face (as I have here on at least one noteable occasion) and it'd just bounce off their thick damn heads.

And again, once you have voluntarily surrendered the very values that make someone a human being in my eyes, you're just an object, a thing, a tool to be used, manipulated and discarded.

To put not too fine a point on it, you could almost say they VOLUNTEERED, since they willingly surrendered the very skepticism and critical thought processes they'd need to prevent me from winding them up like clockwork toys and sending them forth to do my bidding by convincing them it's their own.

When you hand over the reins of your life like that, it's only a matter of time before someone like me grabs a fistful.

I done TOLD you people, in the end, those powers that mean ill for humanity will unknowingly hand me all that is needed to stomp them into the ground, and in this round they handed me all the shock troops I could possibly have asked for, didn't they now ?

And this especially for you, Wulf.

LEARN from this - I threw this bit not just as a slam, but as an educational bit especially for you, so that you don't wind up victim to the same tricks, and if your morals allow it, can put yourself on the issuing end of em, rather than the receiving end.

Think of our political system like prison sex, if your only choice is top or bottom...

Frem, it should give me the screaming willies that there are naughty men like you slipping about. Instead, it gives me comfort.

Could be maybe I'm more anarchist than some of y'all thought...

I like how they try and use "Founding Fathers" to justify their actions ... I seem to remember something else from the FF...

This gasbag is pissed because there's 49 other states that have rights too - what a cartoon.

Don't dump those screaming willies yet there Mikey.

Ponder this ugly thought for a moment.
Some of em work for the other side.

PS. I never liked that flag, it reeks of the same kind of "or else!" thinking that got us the Federalists, the Union, and a bloated, rapacious Federal Government that is destructive to Liberty.

Gimme the Gadsden, any day!

And now, after all his big talk of seccesion - Gov. Rick Perry is now asking for Federal assistance to deal with the possibility of an outbreak of Swine Flu.

Cute that he wants the Feds outta his state and their business.... untill he wants something.

Yup, Story - see the "Captain Trips" thread for my li'l rant on just that.

Lucky me - I'm stuck with this prick for governor. First we were stuck with Dubya, and since then we've had Dubya Lite. If Texas doesn't secede, the other 49 maybe oughta get together and kick 'em out...
