Cut spending ? The Fed Gov't sure as hell can't be trusted w/the people's $$ , especially if they want to jump start the economy.

Florida professor, wife accused of stealing money from NASA
(CNN) -- Federal authorities raided the office of a University of Florida professor on Wednesday who, along with his wife, is suspected of defrauding NASA.

The FBI searched the school's Innovative Nuclear Space Power and Propulsion Institute, founded by Samim Anghaie, and his office on campus, said university spokesman Steve Orlando. Anghaie is a professor of radiological engineering.

FBI spokesman Jeff Westcott would only confirm the searches on campus, referring all questions to the U.S. attorney's office. Calls to the U.S. attorney's office were not returned Wednesday.

According to an affidavit filed February 19, investigators from the FBI and NASA said that since 1999, the government has awarded 13 contracts to the couple's company, New Era Technology Inc. (NETECH), and deposited $3.4 million into the company's corporate account. Investigators allege they diverted much of the money from the corporate account into personal accounts to buy cars and property.

According to NETECH's Web site, the company was established in 1988 as a research and development firm to perform "high-tech, cutting edge research." It boasts "a highly skilled staff of research scientists, engineers, and physicists" and lists NASA, the Department of Defense and the Department of Energy among its employers.

Anghaie's wife, Sousan, is president of NETECH, which is listed under the couple's residential address in Gainesville, according to court documents. The couple have two sons; Hamid, 28, and Ali, 31.

Since 2001, Hamid Anghaie, who lives in Tampa, has been director and vice president of the company. Before Hamid took over, his father had the post, according to court documents.

Ali Anghaie, who lives in Manchester, Connecticut, works for an aerospace firm, Pratt & Whitney, also listed among NETECH's employers.

Calls to the home of Samim and Sousan Anghaie were not immediately returned Wednesday.

Authorities said the Anghaies took advantage of two federal grant programs set up to stimulate technological innovation in the private sector and strengthen the role of small businesses.

Under the NETECH name, they "submitted multiple fraudulent certified contract proposals to NASA, in order to receive the maximum funding for proposed research contracts," according to court documents.

The couple allegedly submitted fraudulent invoices to reimburse payments to "alleged employees," which ultimately resulted in the government overpaying the company, the documents say.

The money was allegedly diverted to personal accounts through the intentional overpayment of employees, including Samim Anghaie, or the payments made to "illegitimate" employees, including the two sons, according to the documents.

Samim Anghaie, who has worked for the University of Florida for nearly 30 years, has been placed on administrative leave with pay, Orlando said.

Cut out this sort of thievery and embezzlement, and our "cost" for running the Gov't comes down.

How much $$$ has BlackWater stolen from the defense department?

And I asked on another thread, but I'll ask again here - which defense department projects are you willing to cut? It's only sensible, since defense/military spending is by far the largest piece of the budget pie.

Since the wars and the "enormulus" deficit spending on defense and "security" of the Bush era are what put us in this mess, let's start by cutting military spending in half.

Also, let's cut the NSA budget for illegal warrantless wiretaps. In fact, let's cut it to zero dollars. There - I've saved you billions already!

Hmm... let's see... Madoff makes off with $50 billion.

The Merrill exectives gave themselves a $3.6 billion dollar payoff right before the compnay tanked.

Enron's Ken Lay (a good friend of Bush), skilling, and Fastow cooked the books for years, created "power outages" to hijack the state of California to the tune of about $30 billion, and took its employees pensions funds with it when it went down, taking $100 billion with it.

Global Crossing, Adelphia, Qwest, Tyco, WorldCom, Countrywide, IndyMac, Stanford Financial, Wamu, Citibank, UBS ... if I were to actually research a list of billion-dollar-plus scams in the past decade there would prolly be about 100 separate names.
www.forbes.com/2002/07/25/accountingtracker.html

In another thread, somebody- possibly Geezer- asked me if I trusted government to run the economy. I never got to answer that question, but my answer is YES. A helluva lot more than I trust those robber-barons who only answer to themselves. The coporate upper echelon has been in a freeding frenzy for the last decade or so. The day of reckoning SHOULD be here, for them.

I'd start by raising their gorram taxes to the friggin' moon.

For the 2009 fiscal year, the base budget rose to US$515.4 billion. Adding emergency discretionary spending and supplemental spending brings the sum to US$651.2 billion.[1] This does not include many military-related items that are outside of the Defense Department budget, such as nuclear weapons research, maintenance and production (about $9.3 billion, which is in the Department of Energy budget), Veterans Affairs (about $33.2 billion), interest on debt incurred in past wars, or the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan (which are largely funded through extra-budgetary supplements, about $170 billion in 2007). As of 2009, the United States government is spending about $1 trillion annually on defense-related purposes.

Military discretionary spending accounts for more than half of the U.S. federal discretionary spending, which is all of the U.S. federal government budget that is not appropriated for mandatory spending

Neither Medicare nor Social Security are to be counted in the regular Federal budget because they are NOT funded by "income taxes". Johnson included them only to make the Vietnam outlays look smaller, and the military-industialists have been using that convenient fiction ever since.

Sig, I'm talking about the % of the Federal Budget that the Dept of Defense gets. You're playing games, in saying that Defense gets 50% of our INCOME taxes, when that's really not the issue. As a % of our nations GDP, funding for the Dept of Defense has has actually gone DOWN in the past yrs, even with the war on terror.

Those "income taxes" that you're so dead-set raising against don't fund Social Security or Medicare. They DO, however, pay for the military to the tune of about 50%.

Raising taxes is a given, and even that in no way will come close to covering the 4 TRILLION DOLLAR DEBT that Pelosi & Obama are laying on us all.........

TOTAL Bush Debt....$ 1 Trillion

Obama Stimulus.....$ 1 Trillion

Geithner Bailouts..$ 1-2 Trillion

Univ Healthcare.....$ 3/4 Trillion
_________________________________________
TOTAL = $ 4 TRILLION +

They're gonna bankrupt the fucking country for decades. What the fuck are they doing? Where's the money coming from? You could take ALL THE INCOME, not just the taxes, but ALL THE INCOME of those making 250K+ and it wouldn't come close to paying this bill. I think they're building a permanent nanny-state, and our money will soon be worthless. Most additional taxes, etc on rich people will utlimate filter down to you and me in the form of higher cost of goods and services, along with our worthless money. And where's the money for Social Security stabilization??? No word about that during the BIG SPEECH! That's really what most Americans care about, not salmon and volcano research!!

What AURaptor means is that the budget for the department of defence is only 16.6%. Unfortunately he seems to confuse that with all military spending. In 2008 the "Global War on Terror" was 21% of the budget alone. A running total shows that's 37.6% already on the military.

Don't forget to add all the emergency off budget appropriations yeah.

Also, don't forget veteran bills, or NASA for that matter, whose budget helps pay for the JPL, which spends most of it's time developing military technology.

Also I hear that the Department of Energy budget is what pays for the energy of military bases.

It's real easy to make it look like you're not spending much on the military, when you hide all those millions in little corners of every other departments budget...

As for the military being the primary reason for the US Federal government, that's utter nonsense. Originally the Founding Fathers didn't want the Federal Government to have a military, Frem knows more about that than I.

Mike, you missed the RAPfact where military spending is only 16% of the budget. According to that you have no case.

It is only 16% of the Federal Budget. Sure as hell isn't 52%. Sorry to burst your ill- conceived and distorted view of the world.

Actually, I did some checking, and 'Rap is somewhat correct on this one.

The military/defense budget (what we KNOW of it, anyway) is over half of the DISCRETIONARY federal budget's annual spending - over $500 billion in 2007. That doesn't include some $24 billion to maintain our nuclear warheads, or the money to keep the wars going in Iraq and Afghanistan. It also includes not a penny of the Pentagon's "Black Projects", which are completely off the books, money-wise.

So the defense budget is NOT more than half of the entire federal budget.

I still maintain, though, that it is the single largest piece of the entire budget pie, if you include ALL of the military/defense/paramilitary contractors.

Sorry for the mix-up. I should have been more clear.

Of course, I can always claim the RapDefense™ - I heard it somewhere, and didn't know for a fact that it was false info, so I definitely didn't lie.

Damnnit Rapo, will you please stop repeating that LIE!

1) Fannie and Freddie only held about 15% of toxic loans. They were a small part of the problem, because they were operating under a consent decree just when the mortgage market took off. It was deregulated banks, mortgage lenders, deregulated investment firms and stupid consumers that got us in this mess!

2) The REPUBS were in charge of Congress during that time. They held the chairs and the majority votes in all committees in all of Congress!Neither Dodd (Senate) nor Frank (House) had the power to kill a bill in committee.

If you repeat that FALSEHOOD one more time I'm gonna dog you on it, the same as I keep dogging you about that "on fire" economy" and those "UN Resolutions" about Iraq: BECAUSE YOU DESERVE IT, YOU FRIGGIN' LYING MORON!

Its not a lie, Sigy. The Fannie and Freddie fiasco, wholly on the shoulders of Barney Frank and the Democrats, is the top of the mountain by which the housing avalanche fell on the U.S. Economic system.

I'm sorry you're too partisan and or stupid to comprehend that, but it's true.

The GOP didn't have but the smallest of numerical margins, and there were enough RINOS to counter anything the GOP tried to do. Such as standing in the way of reform, which the GOP and Bush TRIED to install, for Fannie and Freddie.

All this has been explained and posted before. Google, if you're not scared to do so, and find out the truth.

I'm not lying, the economy was on fire, and the UN resolutions did allow for ANY MEMBER NATION to use what ever force necessary to deal w/ the issue of Iraq.

All true. All factual. All irrefutable.

Dog away. Your efforts will be as futile as ever.

You can choose your own opinions but you can’t choose your own facts

Only if you play with the numbers. I take the defense budget as:
Military base budgets (foreign & domestic)
New military weapon R&D
Veteran medical
Active combat costs
Payroll
Foreign payoffs to keep bases
Black bag ops not funded by drug money
National guard
Mercs
DOD civies
Debt to date

Yeah, all that adds up.

In other words, it was the Republicans. You can bitch and whine about RINOs all you want, but it was still Republicans who held all the chairs and all the majority votes in all committees in all of Congress. So, if anyone deserves the blame, its Republicans. Too bad you can't stop your partisan bitching long enough to see the truth.

housing avalanche fell on the U.S. Economic system
And has been explained before, a pebble rolling down the hill is just a pebble rolling down the hill, unless the entire hill is unstable. The WHOLE HILL was unstable. Too bad you can't take off your partisan blinders long enough to see the truth.
Quote:

I'm not lying, the economy was on fire
It WASN'T "on fire" even by YOUR metrics! Real Federal Revenues were down for most of that time. The stock market barely kept up with inflation. Unemployment was low but real wages were flat or falling. Household debt was at an all-time high. Only a moron would believe that constituted an "on fire" economy. Too bad you can't take off your partisan-tinted glasses long enough to deal with unpleasant reality.
Quote:

and the UN resolutions
... which were replaced, rescinded, superseded, vacated, voided ... use whatever term necessary to get the concept through yout numb skull... did NOT allow any member nation to invade Iraq. Too bad your'e too deluded to get that idea though you partisan-fogged filter.

You can bitch and whine all you want, but you can't make the facts go away.

You pathetic piece of go-se. I JUST found out what RINO means. Now you got another "out." There's always another mitigating factor why you're right when you're wrong.

So what am I? An IINO? If I vote conservative, someone can say, "He's actually a Republican, not an Independent, so it doesn't count."? Lie with stats.

You are so a fool.
